ISSAQUAH THE AREA THAT IS NOW ISSAQUAH was originally named Squak by Native Americans referring to the many water birds the frequented the local bogs, swamps, and creeks. Later in 1892, the town was renamed Gilman after Daniel Gilman who brought the railroad to the area. In 1899, Washington State Legislature was passed naming the area its current name, Issaquah. Today these names are still seen in familiar landmarks around town, from Gilman Boulevard to Squak Mountain. Less than 20 miles from downtown Seattle, Issaquah offers an easy commute for its residents to Bellevue and Seattle, as well as being a home for Costco and a large hub of Microsoft. Issaquah offers residents a variety of different living options from houses on acreage to new condos and town homes on the plateau; there is something for all lifestyles. For the outdoor enthusiast, Poo Poo Point and Cougar Mountain offer various hiking trails. At the base of Tiger Mountain, daring adventurists can be seen paragliding to the landing zone at the base. With Lake Sammamish in the heart of Issaquah, many can be found on the water or in the state park on every available sunny day. Issaquah also offers many shopping and dining options. Front Street, the thoroughfare of downtown, offers numerous restaurants, bars and pubs. It is also the location of the Village Theatre, which brings popular productions such as My Fair Lady and Peter Pan. Residents can also check out Gilman Village for eateries and specialty stores such as White Horse Toys. 20 MILES DOWNTOWN SEATTLE On the other side of Gilman and Front Street one of two remaining Triple XXX diners can be found where diners are transported back in time with their 50s style décor and traditional malts. Down the road, the unmistakable Edelweiss Chalet is found. Since 1942, this has been home of handcrafted hand-made Boehm s Candies. On the plateau, residents can find a newly developed shopping and entertainment hub. The area boasts new and local favorites such as Ben & Jerry s and the Washington started restaurant, The Ram. Dog enthusiasts will also find the Issaquah Highland Bark Park, one of two local off-leash parks. 3
