BERNARD BAUM University Marshal William Bevan, scientist, educator, Vice President and Provost of Johns Hopkins University. In his life and work William Bevan has achieved a combination of roles critically needed in our time. His career represents a synthesis of the two cultures, scientific and humanistic, without which, man and society must remain in perilous fragment& tion. As a behavioral scientist he has made many significant contributions to our understanding of perception, and of the determinants, organization and evaluation of experience: as an educator he has served as a professor of psychology, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Kansas State University, and he now continues the career of an administrator in higher education at the distinguished institution, Johns Hopkins University. William Bevan has also served the national interest as a member of the Armed Forces' National Council, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Science Foundation. His ac complishments are those which have added lustre because they represent labor, patient and strenuous, that continues the vocation of Socrates to help men toward a better understanding of themselves as the only reliable foundation for a better world. In recognition of the full import of his career as one who has sought to interpret more adequately for us both nature and man, we are honored to bestow upon William Bevan the degree of Doctor of Science. ACADEMIC REGALIA Lending color to the pageantry of the Academic Convocation are the academic robes and hoods worn by the faculty. This regalia reaches back into the medieval ages when it served a functional as well as an ornamental, role, separating the learned men from other groups and offering warmth and protection. In America in Lhe late nineteenth century, a conference was held by representatives of colleges and universities to bring some order and system to the custom of academic dress. Since then, there have been periodic conferences to revise or reconfirm existing practices. Essentially, holders of the bachelor's degree wear black robes unadorned. Holders of the master's degree wear hoods which are lined with the colors of the college conferring the degree and trimmed with the color representing the subject in which the degree was earned. The doctoral robe is adorned with velvet and is also worn with the hood suitably ornamented. Holders of degrees from foreign universities or religious orders wear the entire academic costume as decreed by the conferring institution. The following list reflects the colors which will be found on the hoods worn in the Academic Procession at this Convocation, and the subject each represents. Art, Letters, Humanities White Library Science Lemon Commerce, Business Drab Music Pink Economics Copper Nursing Apricot Education Light Blue Philosophy Dark Blue Engineering Orange Physical Education Sage Green Fine Arts Brown Science Goldt>n Yell ow Journalism Crimson Theology Scarlet Law Purple Speech Silver Grey 15
