EDITORIAL NOTE Why is this (short) editorial always so hard to compose? One reason is that the editors rarely get any reaction to their efforts. The quality of the papers printed is indicated, only roughly, by frequency of citation by other scholars, and by inclusion in printed bibliographies and annual summaries of periodical literature, such as those produced by The Economic History Review. It is the editors' policy, supported by the society's council, only to publish scholarly material, but this can be produced by a wide range of potential writers, and we always welcome authors' manuscripts. Do the society's members prefer the wide-ranging content of this volume to the more restricted content of Medieval Cheshire or Seventeenth Century Lancashire (Volumes 128 and 132 respectively)? Should there be more or less such specialist volumes (and what might they cover), or have we got the balance right? What else might we do? The editors are again grateful to Mrs Grace Wyatt for preparing the index. University of Liverpool University of Manchester J.1. Kermode C.B. Phillips August, 1985 Contributors to these Transactions are advised to write to Mrs J.I. Kermode who can supply a leaflet containing guidance for contributors. The Honary Secretary will be pleased to hear from members who wish to read papers, or persons wishing to join the society. Membership is open to all and provides the right to attend the society's meetings, to borrow from its Library, and to receive an annual volume. Transactions, Occasional Series volumes, and offprints can be bought from the honorary Publications Secretary (for addresses of Editors, Secretary, and Publications Secretary see the list of Council and Officers overleaf).
