By Elizabeth Camargo, AIA, LEED AP EC Architecture + Design & Lorimar Martinez Plaza Construction April 06, 2018 Industry Trends SESSION # 7 @ Plaza Construction 120 NE 27th Street, #600 Miami, FL 33137

I. Program Summary & Learning Objectives Industry Trends PROGRAM SUMMARY: This session will discuss the wide range of research in new building materials and technologies, the impact of sea level rise on architectural and urban design, and project-based research on digitally enhanced controlled environments to better understand the emerging challenges in building technology and sustainability towards a more responsible design. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Discuss the integration of innovation in architecture by examining avant-garde materials and technologies, along with recent developments in computational design, design process and architectural practices. 2. Evaluate how advanced building materials and technology can be applied to building construction and assess the benefits brought about. 3. Examine how the impending sea level rise will impact the way buildings are designed and constructed, and cities are planned in order to become resilient to the ever changing environmental conditions. 4. Identify the latest uses of distributed computing in physical environments for a better understanding of the challenges in healthcare design, building technology and sustainability. PROGRAM ABSTRACT: Current industry trends in various fronts are giving shape to the way architectural projects are designed and built. As the practice is revolutionized by new findings, and user preferences become more demanding, there is a need for accountable design in response to the challenges presented by the environment and replacement of obsolete building methods and materials. The initial presentation will first discuss what innovation is, why it is necessary to innovate in architecture and how it relates to architectural design and practice. It will then focus on innovations in architecture, new materials and design methods, innovations in building technologies and the integration of research with design. This presentation will be followed by a virtual tour to the One Thousand Museum Building designed by Zaha Hadid and currently under construction. The presenters will put into perspective the challenges, limitations and applications of the innovative design pursued by the architect, and compare it to traditional techniques. The third part of the program will be a roundtable discussion, where the panelists will present their work and findings in the fields of resiliency to sea level rise, innovative building materials and technology, and applied distributed computing in the study of physical environments. The discussion will focus on how interconnected these three fields are and how they can learn from each other. It will also examine their impact in the design process and architectural practice.
