BRENDEN D. FREDERICK AIA LEED AP
Recently, the AIA has been responding to rapid changes in our culture through its repositioning efforts, and the Strategic Council has become a powerful vehicle of change. It is charged with surveying the profession to identify opportunities and threats, while engaged in strategic planning to define the goals, objectives and strategies of the AIA. They are the canary in the coal mine, identifying current trends and predicting future ones in time for our AIA to react appropriately. While necessary, I believe the ultimate goal of the council would be to AUTHOR THE TRENDS, DON T JUST REACT TO THEM. How do we ensure that we continue to progress this and our other core values? By ensuring we are actively discussing and prioritizing these pertinent issues: developing action plans to affect change; re-evaluating the inventory of past ideas to determine current relevance; a willingness to reprioritize when the tides start to shift; and coming into each discussion with high energy and determination to make an Impact. Above all, we need to ensure that we follow through, in order to turn an idea into reality. A hundred great ideas left undone are worthless compared to one good idea that was carried out.
WHYBDF? Who Am I? I was raised in a suburban Philadelphia neighborhood by two loving parents. My father changed careers in his forties to become a public school teacher in Philadelphia, which was his true vocation. While I was attending Tulane University, I once questioned why high school students today, his students in particular, did not value education, as evident from their poor performance due to apathy, not aptitude. My father opened my eyes; not everyone has the comfort of a roof over their head or three meals a day. In those circumstances, homework does not reach even the top ten of priorities, and he encouraged me to not condemn that which I could not relate to. I have taken two messages from that exchange. First, IT S NOT ABOUT ME. I must be willing to listen to the opinions of others and understand the realities of those who come from different positions. The second, is that parents are asked to prepare their children to have more opportunities than they did. Since becoming a father myself, I realize that each day s challenges complicate providing my son the chance for A FUTURE GREATER THAN MY OWN. I see the MARC Strategic Council in the role of the parent, seeking to understand the various backgrounds we all come from, and striving to provide each (A)architect with the chance to make the built environment better for all. WHYAIA? I graduated from Tulane University s School of Architecture in 2004, and started my career with Becker Morgan Group, Inc. in Salisbury in September of that year. That same year, I joined AIA and participated in various local chapter events. In 2005, I discovered the NCARB State IDP coordinator position. I reached out to my local and state chapters and found it was vacant in Maryland. With their support, I took on this role. Since then, I have served in various roles of local and state boards, serving as Chesapeake Bay Chapter President in 2015 and 2016, and Maryland President in 2017. Throughout these years, I model my service on this homage to John F. Kennedy s words: ASK NOT WHAT YOUR AIA CAN DO FOR YOU, BUT WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR AIA. I believe we should not wait for someone else to do what we desire, but should get up and work for it ourselves. Leadership in AIA gives me the opportunity to affect the decisions that will shape our AIA and profession through our careers, and inspire those that follow us.
WHY the STRATEGIC COUNCIL? Coming home from the beach one evening, my son saw a piece of trash, and asked to stop the car so that we could pick it up. This changed our usual 10 minute drive into a 45 minute beach clean-up, and is one of our favorite memories of this summer. This child helped wake me up with clarity that adults lose in the complexity of life. There was a problem, trash on the beach, the solution was simple; pick it up! When faced with a problem, rather than lamenting why it is there, we can choose to ACCEPT THE PROBLEM EXISTS AND THEN DESIGN A SOLUTION. Sometimes a short term solution is the best we can do, but that is better than inaction and indifference. It affords the time to design a long-term solution that may require significant planning and coordination. I believe the Strategic Council is charged with looking at both of these scenarios. Looking no further than our seven core values and various advocacy initiatives, the challenges are many. Addressing even one of these will require a tremendous amount of effort and focus by our AIA members. I strive to support my fellow architects in their own endeavors, while focusing on my core areas: Business of Architecture, Career, Licensure, Design Matters, and Communities. While these five are separate issues, I believe they can ultimately be broken down into three core objectives. Advance the value of the architect IN the design and construction process Promote Architects as the authority on the built environment Encourage Architects to become leaders and decision-makers within their communities WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT OF ME AS YOUR MARC STRATEGIC COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE? As a Strategic Council Representative, I will tirelessly work to promote Architects and architecture with a primary focus on the core areas of Business of Architecture, Career, Licensure, Design Matters, and Communities, while working with my colleagues on their core areas to assist in any way that I am able. In addition, as your elected representative, you can expect the following: I AM YOUR EARPIECE to the Strategic Council, meaning I will be involved in the discussions that affect the MARC region, and will keep our boards informed of the strategies being developed by the council and our national leadership. I AM YOUR VOICE to the Strategic Council, meaning I will work on behalf of the MARC region as to the current discussions, status of implementation of policies, relationship with and disposition of the National leadership, and upcoming decisions, etc.

August 10, 2018 Tom Liebel, FAIA, LEED Fellow Vice President Moseley Architects 1414 Key Highway, 2 nd Floor Baltimore, MD 21230 Dear Tom, On behalf of AIA Chesapeake Bay, I am pleased to nominate Brenden D. Frederick, AIA, LEED AP, as a candidate to represent the Middle-Atlantic Region to the AIA Strategic Council. Brenden brings to the candidacy his record of outstanding leadership to AIA at both the chapter and state levels, as AIA Chesapeake Bay Past President and AIA Maryland Past President. While president of AIA Chesapeake Bay, Brenden also acted as Executive Director when our then acting director announced her retirement. Brenden not only performed the duties of the position until it was filled, but led the search committee for our current Executive Director and provided her initial training. Brenden has also been involved with legislative affairs, having testified before the Maryland House of Representatives against HB 1311 - Light Frame Combustible Construction, a bill that was ultimately defeated. Brenden then shared his experiences, along with Sandi Worthman, AIA Maryland Executive Director, and Jason Winters, AIA Secretary-Elect, at the Grassroots Leadership Conference earlier this year. On a personal level, Brenden has been very influential in my initial and continued involvement with the Chapter as a board member and current President. I know Brenden s commitment to the AIA and his passion for the architectural profession would be a tremendous asset to the Strategic Council. If there is additional info I can share in support of Brenden s candidacy, please don t hesitate to contact me. Thank you. Sincerely, Matthew J. Ormsby, AIA President Mission Statement of AIA Chesapeake Bay: Advancing the architectural profession to enhance the quality of life for all people. Tuesday 14 August 2018 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing on behalf of Brenden Frederick, AIA in strong support of his candidacy for representative to the AIA Strategic Council from the Mid-Atlantic Region. Brenden has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership in the Mid-Atlantic Region by making significant contributions to the American Institute of Architects and the architectural profession since entering the workforce in 2004. Brenden had a simple start on an emerging professional committee in 2005, and it spawned various leadership positions at both our local chapter and state component. In each instance, Brenden's dedication and hard work culminated as president in which he served as AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter president in 2015 and 2016, and as AIA Maryland president in 2017. Having now known Brenden for over ten years in AIA leadership, I have observed how rare it is to come across a young professional like him who is fully committed to the mission and vision of the AIA. Additionally, I admire Brenden's willingness to take on any role or responsibility, small or large, to make a meaningful contribution to our organization. For this, he is well regarded amongst our professional organization particularly in the Mid- Atlantic Region where he has primarily served. Brenden is also active in his local community serving in leadership roles on the Salisbury Historic District Commission and the Rotary Club of Wicomico. It is clear that Brenden brings strong leadership to all aspects of his personal and professional life. This, coupled with his energy and enthusiasm for the AIA make him an ideal candidate for the AIA Strategic Council. In consideration of Brenden's character, he has always carried himself with integrity, honesty, and respect. His fundamental traits could be described as dependable, benevolent, and highly driven. These personal attributes make Brenden a truly worthy candidate for a prominent leadership role as a representative on the AIA Strategic Council. The AIA Strategic Council is in need of diversity of thought brought on by varied experiences and backgrounds. As a young professional who has quickly elevated in professional practice, Brenden is situated to provide a unique perspective on the issues facing contemporary practice as well as the opportunities and threats facing us in the future. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need more information. Sincerely,! Jason C. Winters, AIA, LEED BD+C Principal Kezlo Group, LLC 443.569.1940 jwinters@kezlo.com
