Ideally positioned at the head of the Carrick Roads, Feock is home to some of the most sought after properties in the county. Situated between the cathedral city of Truro and the historic port of Falmouth, there is immediate access to some of the best day-sailing waters in the British Isles. The Carrick Roads offer an ever-changing marine viewing gallery, with the Falmouth Working Boats dredging oysters, ships laying-up at Trelissick, and of course Loe Beach regatta, one of the summer s most popular village regattas. There are also moorings and lay-up facilities at Loe Beach, a popular beach café and a summer sailing school. The historic National Trust-owned Trelissick Estate lies almost immediately to the east where the King Harry Ferry crosses to the beautiful and unspoilt Roseland Peninsula. Hard to believe in such an idyllic marine setting, the schools and shops of Truro are only about five miles distant. There is a mainline rail link with overnight sleeper service to London Paddington whilst Cornwall Airport (Newquay) provides daily flights to London. To the south, Falmouth is home to a wide range of marine facilities including yacht marinas, the landmark National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club. HISTORY Rex Barratt, in his book Stately Homes In and Around Truro states that Porthgwidden, derived from the Cornish place name of Porthgwyn, believed to mean the white cove, was built in or around the year 1830 by Edmund Turner, MP for Truro 1837-47. The property was acquired in 1842 by John Philpots, one time MP for Gloucester, and enlarged by his sons, the Reverend Canon T Philpots, vicar of the parish for thirty years from 1844-74 and donor of the south porch of Truro Cathedral, who occupied the house until his death in 1890. It was then let to various tenants, Bolitho, Spottiswood, Trefusis - and in 1923 became the property of H.K.Neal, followed in 1935 by Kenneth Holman. During the earlier part of its history the Royal Horticultural Show was held in the grounds and distinguished visitors in the past have included the late Queen Mary and the composer, Edward Elgar. THE PROPERTY Porthgwidden House is a wonderful waterside mansion set in beautiful parkland descending to the shore of the Fal Estuary.
