After postponing our celebration twice due to the Polar Vortex and bone chilling cold requiring four winter weather closings during the month of January, students were finally able to celebrate their 100th day of the school year on Wednday, February 5th. Students celebrated in a variety of ways including creating collag made of 100 dots, counting out 100 steps from the classroom, bringing in collections of 100, and even making celebration crowns. Students practiced their counting and writing all the way to 100 and also jumped, clapped and stomped while counting. Our Kindergarteners reflected on how they would spend their time if they were 100 years old - their rpons ranged from counting all their money to playing toys and even sitting in a wheelchair! The students have made lots of memori & learned a great deal in the first 100 days of school; they can t wait to see what the rt of the year holds in store! Holden's Math Team Compet & Ranks The Chicago Junior Mathematics League Congratulations to the Holden Math Team pictured as they prepare for the competition! On February 8, 2014, Holden s Math Team, comprised of students in grad 6-8th, competed at the second round of the Chicago Junior Mathematics League (CJML) at the University of Illinois in Chicago (UIC). Of the 73 Chicago Public schools entered in the competition, Holden's Math Team helped rank Holden at 5th place with four individual students ranking among the top within their grade levels. This included: Michelle Chen - 4th Place Medal at the 7th grade individual competition; Richie Salinas - Top rank among 7th grade competitors; Noe Rincon - Top rank among 8th grade competitors and Adrian Chavez - Top rank among 8th grade competitors. Santa Lucia Student Austin Monaco Reach Out - Anything for Ava Austin Monaco, a 7th Grade student at Santa Lucia Grade School has organized & sponsored a special benefit for Ava Long, Anything for Ava. Ava is a one year old little girl that has been diagnosed with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome, Pulmonary Atria, Tricuspid Atria and Dextrocardia. The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 23rd from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. in the Santa Lucia School Hall. The benefit will include food, beverag, a silent auction, a raffle and gam. As with all others, the plaque will hang in a prominent space in the school hallway. St. Barbara holds various special events throughout the year to raise money for the missions. Angelina s Kitchen Roasted Corn & Garlic Rice 4 ears sweet corn in husks 2-3 garlic clov, peeled 2-1/4 tsps olive oil 1 cup uncooked long grain rice 2 cups chicken borth 1 bay leaf 1/4 tsp salt 1/8 to 1/4 tsp pepper Carefully peel back husks from corn to withi n 1-in. of bottom; remove silk. Rewrap corn in the husks. Place garlic clov on a piece of heavy-duty foil; drizzle with 1/4 tsp oil. Fold foil around garlic and seal tightly. Place corn and garlic directly on oven rack. Bake at 400 for 30 minut. Remove corn; bake garlic 5-10 minut longer or until softened. Remove garlic from foil and place in a small bowl; cool. Mash with a fork. When corn is cool enough to handle, remove corn from cobs with a sharp knife. In a large saucepan, heat remaining oil over medium heat. Add rice; cook and stir for 2 minut. Gradually add the broth, bay leaf, salt, pepper and roasted garlic. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 12-13 minut or until heated through. Stir in roasted corn; cover and cook 7-10 minut or until rice is tender. Discard bay leaf. Yield: 4 servings. However, on the inside her body is fighting a very difficult battle. Ava and her family need all of your help in faith, healing prayer and support. Ava s friends and family are banding together to help one of our own and also to raise awarens about childhood heart disease. We wear red because Ava s heart matters!
