Watchet historic harbour town Watchet is an ancient harbour town on the West Somerset coast boasting a colourful maritime history dating back over two thousand years. The port was busy and thriving in the mid-19th century when iron ore from the rendon Hills was being shipped from here to South Wales to be smelted and many other local trades made use of the estuary for transport.

Paper-making was also an important industry within the town with the Wansborough paper mill creating employment for generations for a long number of years. History of Stoates Mill Stoate s Mill was built in 1832 and expanded in the mid nineteenth century, making it important to the prosperity of Watchet, with ships bringing grain from Ireland to be milled and flour and bran being shipped across the ristol hannel to Wales. y then it had ten pairs of grinding stones, driven by water from the adjacent Washford River, diverted by a mill leat. In 1911 Stoates and Sons closed the mill and moved their activities to ristol.
