Santa Lucia School S.E.E.P. in Full Swing WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27th, 2018 New Stop Sign Installation at 31st and Shields Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman Patrick D. Thompson joined the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT), local residents and local business owners for the installation of stop signs at 31st and Shields. These signs were installed in the east and west bound traffic lanes to make the intersection a four (4) way stop. Free Home Delivery Congratulations Graduates! The Summer Educational Enrichment Program (S.E.E.P.) is in full effect now as school is out for everyone! The very first trip of the season was to the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. It may have been one of the hottest days yet, but children and teachers jumped aboard a nice, breezy bus to travel to the city's Lincoln Park neighborhood to check out some fun and fantastic sights! The Nature Museum houses various species of animals, insects, and plants/vegetation that are found here in Chicago, Illinois and its outlying areas. Students of S.E.E.P. loved being both outdoors and indoors for this field trip. They learned about the Chicago River and Lake Michigan, as well as some of the animals that call those waterways home. They also discussed the positive effects of recycling, reducing waste, and reusing items to help the safety of our environment and all its special inhabitants. And the best part, walking through the butterfly exhibit where kids saw hundreds of different types of butterflies. Some students got lucky enough to have one land on them! A little Chicago heat couldn't keep this group down! Flood Tips Heavy rains could lead to flooding. The Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management urges residents to keep the following road facts and tips in mind: Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling. A foot of water will float many vehicles. Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including SUVs and pick ups. Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. The depth of water is not always obvious. The road bed may be washed out under the water and you could be stranded or trapped. Do not drive around a barricade, as they are there for your protection. Turn around and go the other way. If evacuation routes have been designated, do not try to take short cuts. They may be blocked. Be especially cautious driving at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers. Do not drive into flooded areas. If flood waters rise around your vehicle, abandon it and move to higher ground, if you can do so safely. July Events at McKinley Park Branch Senior Computer Workshop An introduction to computers workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 3rd at 2:30 p.m. Participants will learn computer basics: how to start a computer and how to operate the mouse and keyboard. This workshop is mainly for seniors but everyone is welcome. Please call 312 747 6082 to register. Games Day Games Days will be held on Saturdays, July 7th and 14th, from 1:30 4:30 pm., for all ages. Six new games will be selected each month. We will also have the traditional games for those who simply want to have fun for an evening. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. The Chicago Public Library, McKinley Park Branch is located at 1915 W. 35th street. Please call 312 747 6082 for more information. Pictured with Commissioner Daley, Alderman Thompson and 11th Ward Superintendent are CDOT employees, local residents and local business owners. Thank you to all who have reached out to our office with their issues concerning traffic on 31st and Shields. We will continue to listen to neighbors and address their concerns, said Commissioner Daley. The safety of our residents is my number one priority. The additional stop signs will be beneficial to all of our motorists and pedestrians utilizing this intersection, added Alderman Thompson. Aquinas Literacy Center Graduates Eleven Students and Honors All Students On Friday, June 15, Aquinas Literacy Center (ALC) held its annual Student Awards Celebration. Eleven adult learners were celebrated for their graduation from Aquinas English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Two deserving graduates, Maria Liduvina Patino and Guadalupe Rodriguez, were awarded the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship. Each year ALC awards the scholarship to a graduate who goes above and beyond the average student. During their time as students at Aquinas Literacy Center, both women were consistent in attending their one on one tutoring, actively participated in supplemental classes and improved their English through computer learning. The scholarship was created in memory of Sister Claudia Hinds, the Adrian Dominican Sister who founded ALC. Scholarship funds are used to further the student s education in English. Maria Liduvina Patino and Guadalupe Rodriguez, recipients of the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship. During the celebration, 146 students were recognized for their various accomplishments during the school year, such as obtaining a job or promotion, becoming a citizen, enrolling in English classes, etc. After the recognition ceremony students and their tutors, along with family and friends, enjoyed an evening of food and celebration. All of the students are well deserving of their wonderful accomplishments in learning English! Since 1996, Aquinas Literacy Center has offered individualized instruction in the English language to the adult immigrant population of McKinley Park and surrounding areas (Bridgeport, Back of the Yards and Brighton Park) of Chicago. Through one on one tutoring, combined with supplemental learning opportunities (conversation classes, book clubs and writing workshops) and independent computer learning, learners are empowered to transform their lives by acquiring skills to become successful parents, productive workers and responsible citizens. Annually, 150 volunteer literacy tutors instruct 200 adult learners. Aquinas Literacy Center is sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters and is a member of the Dominican Rea Literacy Corporation. For more information, call (773) 927 0512 or email sabrina@aquinasliteracycenter.org. Go Meteors! Flag Day Ceremony The 11th Ward Democratic Organization and the South Loop Chamber of Commerce celebrated the 12th Annual Flag Day Ceremony. The event was organized by Commissioner John P. Daley, Alderman Patrick D. Thompson, Honorable James A. Balcer and the South Loop Chamber of Commerce. Service men and women with their families joined the ceremony on June 14th at 4500 S. Halsted. Father Mc Nalis (Chicago Fire Department Chaplain) led the gathering in prayer and Chicago Police Officer Kenyatta Gaines sang the National Anthem at this beautiful ceremony. Also participating were Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago, CFD Engine #49, Commander Randall L. Darlin, 9th District Commander, State Rep. Theresa Mah, a representative from Congressman Dan Lipinski s Office and a representative from Senator Mattie Hunter s office. Students also joined us from Graham School, Air Force Academy High School, Marine Leadership Academy, Chicago Military Academy and Corliss Navy JROTC program. This is the largest Flag ceremony in the country honoring the American Flag. Representatives were on hand to properly dispose of over 11,000 tattered and worn American, City of Chicago, POW and MIA Flags.

THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27th, 2018 Munoz Takes Seniors on Informational Trip to White Sox Game St. Barbara Assistant Majority Leader Antonio Tony Munoz and a group of about 60 area seniors attended Thursday s Chicago White Sox game to enjoy the day and discuss their community needs. These are people that are invested in their com munities and their input is very important to me, Munoz said. I am happy to treat them to an after noon like this and I am very appreciative of their feedback. The group first had lunch at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church before traveling by bus to Guaranteed Rate field to watch the White Sox take on the Cleveland Indians. Seniors were provided with visors and health record books to keep track of their medical history as well. The books included helpful phone numbers and information for dealing with health emergencies. I enjoyed seeing our seniors out at the ballpark enjoying the Sox game and the wonderful weather we were blessed with, Munoz said. It s important that we keep up with the needs of the seniors in our community and make sure they aren t forgotten. While the Sox were defeated 5 2, Munoz said the seniors en joyed the weather and a two run home run from Jose Abreu in the first inning. For so long, peo ple like this have worked so hard to make our community better and make me a more effective legislator, Munoz said. I am happy to provide them with this opportunity. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. ARV Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control Issues Pet Safety Tips for Summer Heat Cook County Animal and Rabies Control urges pet owners to take special precautions to protect the health and welfare of their pets during the forecasted excessive heat. Among the recommendations: Do not leave your pet in a hot car: Even with the windows rolled down, studies have shown that the temperature inside the car can increase by 15 degrees above the outside temperature. The law requires that any time the ambient temperature is above 78 degrees, you cannot leave your dog in a car. Keep your pets cool when outside: All dogs should be provided with cool water and shade, and monitored when outside. Short coated animals and animals with white or tan fur are susceptible to sunburn, especially on their noses. Consider a haircut: If your dog has a thick coat, consider a haircut for summer. One inch is a good length to keep you dog more comfortable while avoiding sunburn. Vaccinate your pets: Make sure that your dog is up to date on all shots, including canine influenza virus and rabies. Cook County Animal and Rabies Control is offering low cost rabies vaccine clinics throughout the County. Take care of your dog s paws: Remember that asphalt and sidewalks are hotter than grass, and dogs paw pads are highly sensitive to heat. Whenever possible, walk your dog on grass, dirt or gravel, and avoid asphalt and concrete during a heat wave. Keep inside temperatures cool: Make sure your indoor pets have water and are comfortable when in the home. And don t be alarmed if you see your cat sleeping somewhere odd, like the bathtub or the closet. Cats look for the coolest spot in the home.
