Collamore Collection, 1735-1872 1960.6 Old Sturbridge Village Research Library 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road Sturbridge, MA 01566 508-347-0204 Collection Overview Repository: Old Sturbridge Village Research Library, Sturbridge, MA Creator: Unknown Title: Collamore Collection Dates: 1748-1872 Extent: one box,.25 linear feet Abstract: This collection contains the personal and legal papers of Horace Collamore (1791-1867) of Boston and Pembroke, Massachusetts, operator of Hastings and Collamore, Boston china and glassware business, later Collamore and Churchill. A number of correspondences refer to a Mrs. Valentine Brown (Mary). Collamore s order letter book (1814-1818), sales book (1815-1820), and inventory book (no date, c. 1817) are also included. Location: OSV Library Vault, as of July 2018 Language: English Biographical Sketch Revolutionary Capt. Enoch Collamore (1745-1824) and Hannah Cushing, parents of Gilman Collamore (1789-1823) and Horace Collamore (1791-1867) among other children, lived in Scituate Massachusetts which they referred to as Gilman Plain. It is said that Capt. Enoch had a tavern there on the Boston- Plymouth Stage Road. (Deane, Samuel. History of Scituate, Massachusetts: From Its First Settlement to 1831. Boston, 1831.) Horace Collamore was educated at Hanover Academy and entered into the china and glassware business of Hastings and Collamore at 31 Marlborough Street in Boston. He ran the business alone at 48 Marlborough Street and later as Collamore and Churchill. He married Laurentia Laura Briggs (1792-1866) on September 20, 1814.They had eleven children; Horace 1815, Horace Lorenzo 1816, Laura Ann 1

1818, Adeline 1820, Augustus 1822, Julia 1824 Francis 1825, Marcia 1828, Frederick 1830, Leander 1831, and Mary 1834. (Hatch, Charles. Genealogy of the Descendants of Anthony Collamer of Scituate, Massachusetts. Salem, 1915.) Mary B. Brown was married to Valentine O.B. Brown. Children include Valentine O., Charles L, Josiah B., and Mary C. According to Valentine s will (December 4, 1838), Mary had three sisters; Catherine Kitton, Susan Fowler, and Abigail Whitney. One letter addressed to Mary list the town of Randolph, Vermont. The will mentions an Eliza Edson, daughter of Doctor John Edson of Randolph, Vermont. Scope and Content The collection does not have a formal titled series but has retained the original number system as when first processed. Each series section is as follows: Series 1: Personal and Legal Papers Series 2: Order Letter Book Series 3: Sales Book Series 4: Inventory Book Personal and Legal letters are broken down to line item (ex. 1960.6.1.1) while the other three groups only have one item each. Series 1 is mostly in chronological order except the original processing had an order that was retained so select items appears out of place. Restrictions This collection is open for research. Use is limited to available Library hours and staff. Copies and scans are done at the discretion of the library staff and condition of materials.
