Miss Griffin of St. Gabriel School Retiring After 46 Years of Teaching Congratulations to Ms. Mary Griffin, 8th Grade Teacher at Saint Gabriel School, on her retirement August 2nd, 2018. Ms. Griffin began her career of 46 years in 1972 thanks to Mrs. Berger who lived in St. Gabriel Parish. She called and told Miss Griffin to come meet the principal then with the pastor. The pastor asked a question, gave her the contract and said anybody Mrs. Berger likes gets the job. Meanwhile, her father had arranged a job for her at the Public School making much more money. Miss Griffin said she felt a calling to be in the Catholic School and to share her faith. Her father, the person who inspired her the most, gave her his blessing and to this day she is thankful to God for guiding her through the good and the bad times to keep her at St. Gabriel School for all 46 years of her teaching career. Miss Griffin has given her time to coach volleyball, academic bowl teams, and to support students in various sports, events and worthy causes. Students would come back to thank her for emphasizing the importance of God in their life, preparing them for high school and for being a great teacher. In a 2010, student interview with Kylee Sullivan, Miss Griffin was asked what she liked best about St. Gabriel School, she replied, I love my students and St. Gabriel very much. I just love how everyone cares for everyone and the neighborhood cares about St. Gabriel. The students, families, parishioners, former faculty members and principals she has built relationships with over the 46 years are her family and true blessings in her life. All are welcome to join the St. Gabriel Community in honoring Miss Griffin on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at the 4:30 p.m. mass with a reception following in the school hall. St. Jerome s Girls Night Out On Friday, November 9, 7-11pm, St. Jerome is hosting BRIDGEPORT S LARGEST LADIES NIGHT OUT EVENT! Tickets on sale for 10 until Nov. 1 at the school office, 2801 S. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17th, 2018 A Big & Heartful Thank You to All The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest of intentions. -Oscar Wilde Kazcors Never Quit started with a small act of kindness. When Papa (Jack Robin) wanted to have a benefit to help Tony and the boys he asked a few people to help and what we celebrated on Sunday, 10/14 was the product of that small act WOW! Sean, Michael and William are so lucky to have such a loving and caring community of angels all around them as they begin a new chapter in their lives. The response to our request for help has been overwhelming and so greatly appreciated. The tireless work of the volunteers (who are too numerous to mention) to the random strangers who listened to the story and just needed to help with a donation or kind concern, we thank you. The outpouring of support from our Corporate Sponsors has been a tremendous help in defraying the expenses of the benefit. We offer a heartfelt thank you to: The Bridgeport/Canaryville Communities and the 11th Ward Democratic Party for everything they have done over the past couple of years to help Tony and the boys. (Meals, rides to school, practice, games, etc. helped provide a new normal for the family.) The efforts of the Kaczor s friends and neighbors have been integral to the success we see here today. The IBEW Local 134 for their constant support and generosity as Tony battled cancer and throughout the planning of this benefit. The Bridgeport News for promoting Kaczors Never Quit each week and helping us reach as many volunteers and benefactors as possible. Finally, we have to thank De La Salle Institute for their gracious hospitality and generosity in allowing us to host this event in their house. Thank you everyone for your very kind donations and support. Your generosity means so much and will make a difference in the lives of Sean, Michael and William by providing a sense of financial security as they grow to reach their full potential. You are making a difference and we are forever grateful. God bless, The Kaczor and Robin Families Santa Lucia Students and Their Beloved Pets In honor of the Feast of St. Francis, the school children of Santa Lucia celebrated with a special Mass to learn about St. Francis. Fr. Ivica had very interesting information about St. Francis and his life before he was a saint. St. Francis, or Francesco, was an only child born to a very wealthy Italian family. He loved the finer things in life, but found himself still feeling empty and wanting more. Francesco realized that what he wanted to do was to live as Christ. He gave away all of his belongings and lived a life of poverty while promoting and preaching of peace to all. He was so gentle and kind that even the animals, which he viewed as brothers and sisters, were endeared to him. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals and his feast day is celebrated on October 4. Children brought their photos of their pets and received a special blessing from Father Ivica after Mass. Pictured: (front row) Oriana Neuman, Lucas Livingston, Donna Maher, Emily Livingston, Giavanna Clatworthy, Laylah Chico, and Skye Morris. (back row) Mrs. Dalcamo, Alexia Escudero, Michaela Galvez, Fr. Ivica, Boluwatife Ogunsola, and Ms. Knapp-Stack. Student Council at St. Jerome The seventh and eighth grade students of Saint Jerome School were recently appointed as the Student Council for the 2018-2019 School Year. Katilyn DeFoe is President and Annabella Molloy is the Vice President. Congratulations to all members! The days are getting shorter and the temperatures cooler, signs that it s the time of year when many people turn the heat back on in their homes. It s also the time of year when the number of home fires goes up, often times caused by the use of alternate heating methods. The American Red Cross has steps people should follow as they get their homes ready for cooler weather. It s important to take steps to get your home ready for winter, said Celena Roldán, CEO of the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois. The Red Cross responds to about 64,0 disasters every year across the country, and most of them are home fires. We urge people to follow these steps to be ready for the cooler weather. Have furnaces, chimneys, fireplaces, wood and coal stoves inspected and cleaned before another winter of use. Test batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Other good steps to take to get one s home ready for winter include: make sure flashlights are available throughout the house and they have fresh batteries. (winter storms can lead to power outages.), insulate the home by installing storm windows or covering the inside of windows with plastic to keep cold air out, develop a fire escape plan and practice it with everyone who lives in the home. Prepare a disaster supply kit to have ready should winter storms hit. The kit should include a three-day supply of food and water per person, flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio and extra batteries. Other things to have on hand for the winter include: sand, rock salt or kitty litter to make walkways and steps less slippery, warm coats, gloves or mittens, hats, boots and warm clothing for all household members, along with extra blankets. Nearly half of the households in this country use alternative heating sources such as space heaters, fireplaces, or wood/coal stoves to stay warm. Fixed and portable space heaters, including wood stoves, are involved in 74 percent of fire-related deaths. If someone is using a space heater, the Red Cross recommends that people look for a model that shuts off automatically if the heater falls over. Space heaters should be placed on a level, hard and nonflammable surface in the home. Other safety tips include: keep all potential sources of fuel like paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs at least three feet away from space heaters, stoves, or fireplaces. Portable heaters and fireplaces should never be left unattended. Turn off space heaters and make sure any embers in the fireplace are extinguished before going to bed or leaving home. Keep children and pets away from space heaters. Download the free Red Cross Emergency App at redcross.org/apps for heating safety and winter storm tips. The Red Cross and its partners have undertaken an effort to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25%. The Home Fire Campaign began in 2014 and is already responsible for saving more than 470 lives. Working with fire departments and community groups across the country, the Red Cross is installing smoke alarms in homes in neighborhoods at high risk for fires and teaching residents about fire prevention and preparedness. The Red Cross is calling on everyone to take two simple steps that can save lives: create and practice their home fire escape plan and check their smoke alarms. To learn more about the campaign and home fire safety, visit redcross.org/homefires. BRIDGEPORT NEWS - Page 3 DID YOU KNOW? This annual event has employees racing in either a walk or run category. Participants put their best foot forward in the one-mile race walk, or a one-mile run. Team results are scored based on the best times of each company s top five walkers. Individual awards go to fastest walker and runner for both male and female category as well as the Masters (over 40 years old) runners. The overall winner of the team challenge takes home the symbolic Key of Bridgeport. For the third year in a row, S&B has won this prestigious award. The Patrick J. Boyle Memorial track and garden also played host to the first ever 4- lap team relay, where 5 teams of four each completed a lap of the 1/5 a mile track at blistering speeds. The two companies had a combined race participant total of 52 racers along with several on-lookers cheering on the racers. Donations from employees were matched by both companies and a total of 3,870 will be donated to Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Next year the two companies are considering expanding the event to other neighborhood employers. If interested in participating in the Race Walking Championships, please contact S&B or Tripp Lite for more information.
