To the south-west, the mountain of Chaipaval rises to 365 metres, while to the north, the huge expanse of sand of Luskentyre beach leads the eye to the rocky mountains of North Harris, the highest point being Clisham, at 799 metresription Situated only 14 miles from the Tarbert which is the main community on Harris. Tarbert harbour is the island s main ferry terminal and also serves as the muster point for boat tours to the outlying Shiant islands, home to colonies of puffins and razor bills. Tarbert offers a wide range of facilities including schools, a doctors surgery, churches, a post office, shops and banking as well as the world famous Harris Tweed store. Work is due to start on the Isle of Harris Distillery later this year, further boosting tourist numbers.
Directions On arriving in Harris from the ferry terminal take the A859 Tarbert to Stornaway road. Borvemor Cottages are just off the A859 road 14 miles south of Tarbert on the west side of Harris and 6 miles north of Leverburgh. The cottages are on the west side of the road where the township of Borve meets Scarista. Accommodation The accommodation consists of Vallay house, two adjoining steading "cottages" called Stable Cottage and Byre Cottage, an award winning traditional thatched Black House, the Tigh Dubh, which stands a distance away and a recently built Beach Studio Apartment. Vallay House - The two storey house was built up from the foundation walls of the 18th century Borvemor House within the last 20 years and then had an extension added. It accommodates 6 guests comfortably with one double and 2 twin bedrooms. The lounge is next to a galley kitchen which leads into the dining room and on to a sunny patio. There is a bathroom upstairs and a double shower room downstairs. Infrared sauna accessible from patio with access to out-buildings too.good views of the nearby Atalantic from upstairs. Borvemor Black House - Using the age old materials of stone, wood and thatch the classic shape of the island house when completed in 1993 received the dry stone walling Pinnacle award. This is a romantic setting for honeymoon couples and for celebrating anniversary memories too. The main bedroom takes a king sized double bed, and there is a recessed box bed as well off the cosy living room with its coal burning stove There is underfloor heating in the bathroom. A very peaceful setting. The Beach Studio Accommodates 6/8 guests and is graded fully accessible with a comfortable double bedroom on ground floor along with a spacious living area and well equipped kitchen There is a well-proportioned bathroom downstairs, twin bedrooms upstairs, along with another shower / toilet room and access to a further 4th bedroom if required for additional guests. Kennel Studio This apartment adjoins The Beach Studio and is available to parties of 2 or less. It has a separate ground floor entrance to a self-contained compact flat with access to a large bedroom area upstairs should it be required, accessible by spiral staircase. Stable Cottage has three bedrooms, one double and two twin rooms. The living room is spacious with full height glass door panels at the gable end, an open plan dining area at the other end and a self-contained kitchen beside this. Byre Cottage has two bedrooms, one of them a double and has a modern fitted kitchen / living room leading off a corridor opening on to a pleasant conservatory. These two steading cottages have proved very popular with family lets. There is also a large walled garden behind them with access from the main road at the front and also from the rear leading to a building once used as a café with up to 30 covers. This is a well-appointed building and a potential commercial opportunity subject to usual planning consents for specific uses. Both Vallay House and Beach House are approved by local planning department for residential use if required. Externally Each cottage has its own access road and parking.
