LOCALE Montezuma County (pop. 25,535) is located in the southwest corner of the U.S. state of Colorado. The county seat is Cortez. The county covers 2,040 square miles of the Colorado Plateau, and has the distinction of bordering Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. It is known as the Four Corners region, where the boundaries of four states intersect. Mesa Verde National Park, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Yucca House National Monument, and Hovenweep National Monument preserve hundreds of ancient Amerindian structures within the county, including the famous cliff-dwellings. Montezuma County was created in April 1889 and was named in honor of Moctezuma II, a famous chief of the Aztec Indians in Mexico. The building ruins in Mesa Verde National Park were thought to be of Aztec origin at the time. It is also varied topographically, ranging in elevation from about 6,000 feet to more than 13,200 feet, and includes habitats from high Colorado Plateau desert to alpine tundra. Much of the county is irrigated cropland, and produces fruit and beans, and supports large numbers of cattle and sheep. It is served by U.S. Highways 160 and 491 and by the Cortez Municipal Airport. 6

AREA ATTRACTIONS Mesa Verde National Park is a National Park and World Heritage Site located in Montezuma County, Colorado. It protects some of the bestpreserved Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites in the United States. The park was created by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and occupies 52,485 acres near the Four Corners region of southwestern Colorado. With more than 4,300 sites, including 600 cliff dwellings, it is the largest archaeological preserve in the U.S. Mesa Verde is best known for structures such as Cliff Palace, which is thought to be the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The Mesa Verdeans survived using a combination of hunting, gathering, and subsistence farming of crops. They built the mesa s first pueblos sometime after 650 AD, and by the end of the 12th century, they began to construct the massive cliff dwellings for which the park is best known. By 1285, following a period of social and environmental instability driven by a series of severe and prolonged droughts, they abandoned the area and moved south to locations in Arizona and New Mexico. PAINTED HAND PUEBLO, CANYONS OF THE ANCIENTS NATIONAL MONUMENT Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is a national monument protecting an archaeologically significant landscape located in southwestern Colorado. Designated in June of 2000, the monument s 176,056 acres are managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Canyons of the Ancients encompasses and surrounds three of the four separate sections of Hovenweep National Monument, which is administered by the National Park Service. The monument was proclaimed in order to preserve the largest concentration of archaeological sites in the United States, primarily Ancestral Puebloan ruins. As of 2005, over 6,000 individual archeological sites had been identified within the monument. Cortez, located in the southwestern portion of Colorado, has been called a Gateway to many things. One is a Gateway to Canyon Country, well named because of its close proximity to the Canyonlands of southern Utah. Another is the Gateway to Mesa Verde, which lies only minutes from town. The rugged La Plata and San Juan Mountain Ranges, plainly visible from town, also make Cortez the Gateway to the Mountains. Cortez, Colorado rests on that imaginary border between mountain and desert, close enough for high elevation views, but low enough to experience the arid environment of the high desert. It is a unique area distinguished by its awe-inspiring scenery and rich ancient history background. Within two hours of driving you could find youreslf in the well-known recreation areas of Durango, Telluride, Moab or Monument Valley. 7
