photo: Luca Emanueli photo: Luca Emanueli via Pisana via Pisana 14-16-18 50143 Florence The via Pisana project, in Florence, occupies three blocks beside the Arno, and uses vacant space in the core of a block occupied by an old gas reservoir no longer in use In spite of the charm of the place in its partly abandoned state, the architects chose to concentrate on new ways of living in the area rather than on conserving traces of the past Designed to fit a low budget, their proposal comprises both the rehabilitation of existing buildings and a carefully designed extension to suit the scale of the local urban fabric Laid out around laneways, patios and galleries, the nine dwellings extend, in their rear courts, private spaces that make no effort at representation Clearly, the rapprochement between old structures and new additions holds to a similarity of form of access, the shape of a stairwell or that of a terrace Everything is formulated in sober manner The dwellings range from 50 to 100 square meters in area, and some have rooftop terrace photo: Luca Emanueli Project is not public! 11-2001 Main designer, Architect Architect Client Luca Emanueli Qart Progetti Florence City Council ncuc http://wwwmimoaeu/users/martijnvdh/guides/tuscany%202017/ 3
photo: Evan Chakroff photo: Evan Chakroff San Giovanni Battista Church Via di Limite 10 50013 Campi Bisenzio Formally named after John the Baptist, this church has also earned the name Church of the Freeway of the Sun for its location between the Autostrada del Sole (Freeway of the Sun) and the A11 Firenze-Mare Highway The design of the church is meant to reflect both modern and traditional church design The 'cross' floor plan and stone facing are meant to evoke a traditional feel while the tent-like vertical elements and copper roofing reflect modern design tastes The church stands 27,5 metres high The materials used are stone and concrete for the walls and copper for the roof, oxidized to green on the outside and burnished blond on the inside Marble, glass and bronze are used for the interior elements The building's floor plan is asymmetrical and follows sinuous curves, creating a feeling of fluid space One of the intentions to build the church was to honor the workers who had died during construction of the freeway photo: Evan Chakroff Project is public! 1963 Architect Giovanni Michelucci evanc http://wwwmimoaeu/users/martijnvdh/guides/tuscany%202017/ 4

photo: Marco Zanini photo: Marco Zanini Santa Maria Assunta Church Piazza A Aalto 1 40038 Vergato Riola http://wwwparrocchieit/grizzanamorandi/riola/ In line with the new dictates of the Church, which halfway through the 1950s felt the need to adopt new languages in order to communicate with worshippers, the church at Riola was conceived with the idea of creating a liturgical area inserted in the surroundings which would encourage maximum participation The river, mountains and the nearby Rocchetta Mattei were indeed precise landmarks for the architect when modelling the building The presence of the river was especially important in the development of the entire project The volume of the church has been defined as the flowing of a river, and the light in the building captures and reflects the light as it shines on the water This was the first time that Alvar Aalto had used materials such as raw stone for the coverings and terra cotta for the floors Project is public! 1978 Architect, Landscape architect Alvar Aalto marco_zanini photo: Marco Zanini Can be visited every day from 0700-2000, except for Saturdays at 1700 and Sundays at 1100, when it is closed to tourists for mass By car: SS64 By train: "Riola" railway station, the church is right across the river from the station http://wwwmimoaeu/users/martijnvdh/guides/tuscany%202017/ 6
