Karen Lewis Knowlton School of Architecture The Ohio State University 275 West Woodruff Avenue Columbus, OH 43210 (e) lewis.1512@osu.edu (c) 617. 970. 1606 Academic Appointments The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture, Architecture Section Assistant Professor, September 2009 current University of Kentucky College of Design, School of Architecture Assistant Professor of Architecture, September 2006 May 2009 Lecturer in Architecture, September 2004 August 2006 Harvard University Faculty of Arts & Sciences, Visual and Environmental Studies Teaching Fellow, September 2003 May 2004 Current Research Projects Data Processing: Truck stops, ferry terminals, ports, turnpikes, parking lots, stockyards are designed to prioritize a working landscape motivated by the organization and function of environmental and economic systems. To design the buildings, infrastructures and sites of accommodation, the economic and logistical data of each project is visualized through several series of diagrams. These diagrams work to collect and synthesize the statistical information of each project, and in rendering the data visible, allows for new relationships and adjacencies between components to be understood, and therefore designed. Instead of diagramming program to organize building form, for example, diagramming large scale economic, logistical and site information allows for the infrastructural systems themselves to be rendered and designed. These diagrams synthesize logistical data to design new ways of organizing and distributing people, processes and goods. Data Processing manifests itself in several recent and on-going design projects; first, Health Corridor and Switch Space, imagine the changing nature of Ohio s economy from one based on goods to one supported by services, imagines new scales of transportation networks that support a service-oriented economy; Harborport, a sustainable-infrastructure project for New York City that links together several scales of water re mediation with transportation; Envisioning Organization surveys the historic and projects the future of role of diagrams in architectural production; Graphic Design for Architects is a book that outlines modes of architectural representation based on graphic design and information graphics.
