The Gothc Rvval structure, a 5-part plan and facng east, s bult of rock-faced, coursed ashlar trachyte, a pnksh color volcanc rock quarred at Douglas Staton near Castle Rock, Colorado. It s backed wth sandstone from a quarry near old Colorado Cty. The contrastng whte trm s of dressed Mantou lmestone. When the buldng frst opened, t faced an unlandscaped four-block campus square across Cascade Avenue. The settng was dramatc, wth the Rocky Mountans as a backdrop and wth no other buldngs, trees, or shrubbery nearby. Today Cutler Hall has less physcal promnence, beng more obscured by mature trees and foundaton plantngs and s surrounded by large buldngs. A crcular drve extends to the facade provdng vehcular access from North Cascade Avenue. Concrete walks extend around the buldng provdng access to the front and rear entrances. The earler two-story, symmetrcally desgned, central secton s flanked by one-story wngs connected wth hyphens. The steeply ptched gabled roof of the central secton s parallel to the facade; wng roofs are perpendcular. A hgh foundaton extends around the structure. Gable ends are parapeted wth the central sectons rsng nto grouped chmney stacks suggestng multple chmney pots. A cupola n the form of a flesche s centered on the roof rdge of the central secton. The cupola s a twor-stage bell tower remnescent of London*s Prnce Albert Memoral. The frst stage, wth open buttresses at the cornce of each elevaton whch have a trefol arch extendng nto an open tympanum, supports an ogee roofed structure second stage. The facade of the central secton s a 3-bay composton wth the second floor beng slghtly recessed above the contnuous wndow sll-belt course. Compounded ponted arches wthn an open pedment characterze the entrance feature whch s flanked wth stepped buttresses. Above the entrance s a par of double hung sash, each wth a ponted arch transom above a transom bar, all set wthn a large ponted blnd arch of the contrastng lmestone. A quarterfol nflls the arch whch extends above the man eave, and s capped by a parapeted gable typcally set wth lmestone copng and corbels above the man eave. The apex termnates wth a crocket fnal. At the frst floor, flankng the entrance, are trple openngs wth double hung sash set below transoms. Typcally, the beveled mullons, quoned jambs, slls, and lntels are lmestone. At the second floor, flankng the central feature, are pars of wndow openngs above ponted arch transoms set below the open pedmented gable extendng above the man eave. The three bays suggest dormers by projectng beyond the recessed second floor wall surface. Segementally arched, sngle openng basement wndows are set below the flankng facade bays wthn the foundaton whch extends to a contnuous moulded lmestone water table - frst floor wndow sll course.
