Then, each took their turn at championship. After the fanfare and celebration was completed at Terry Field, Liberty returned to Lynchburg and found out later that evening that it was rewarded for its accomplishments by being pitted against top-seeded UCLA, the nation s No. 1 ranked team entering the tournament, in the first round the NCAA Regional in Columbia, S.C. The Lady Flames success seemed to continue to follow them in the NCAA Championship, as Liberty did not back down against the eighttime national champion. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bruins showed why they were the nation s top-ranked team and eventually pulled way from Liberty for a 3-0 victory. The contest was however marked by a few individual achievements as Mary Beth Kennell got the Lady Flames lone hit of the game with a single to left field to lead off the second inning. Ali Thompson accomplished something that only 18 other pitchers had done all season as she struck out Stacey Nuveman, the NCAA s all-time career home run leader. The Lady Flames followed the game against UCLA with a 7-1 loss to former Big South Conference member UMBC; however, they walked away from the experience with the respect of the other teams at the NCAA Regional, the title of Big South Conference champions and memories that will last a lifetime.
