William Bramwell "Bramble" Hoar (H1G) was born 25 Sep 1837 in Chesterfield (?), Chester Co., PA. Another source list his birthplace as Clearfield Co., PA. He was 5' 8" tall with a fair complexion, auburn hair, and brown eyes. William enlisted in Company F, 103 Regiment of the Illinois Infantry Volunteers as a private on 31 Dec 1862. He was treated several times for intestinal fever and dysentery as well as a sprained ankle. He 2

was in General Sherman's March to the Sea. He told of marching in snow with worn out shoes, leaving blood spots in the snow. He often talked of having to eat parched corn and of having to march all day at a dog trot. At one point a bullet went through his hat, grazing him on the scalp. He was mustered out on 21 Jun 1865. He married Mary Helen Churchill (H1G/W/, born 28 Dec 1847 in Cuba, Fulton Co., IL., daughter of William and Malvina (Naxin) Churchill) on 14 Dec 1865 in Cuba, Fulton Co., IL. by Reverend J. B. Ross. They moved to Rooks Co., KS. in a covered wagon in 1877 along with several other families, including his parents. William homesteaded the SE 1/4 of Twp 6, R 16 in Section 15 of Ash Rock Twp., Rooks Co., KS. on 31 Oct 1877. There were no houses or churches around for miles. The city of Woodston was not even established yet. They first lived in a dug-out until they could build a sod house and later a log cabin (doubtful since there were so few trees in the area). They appeared in the 1880 Kansas census. About 1885 they built a frame house which was enlarged about 1903. Henry and Mary were both born in the frame house. On 04 Mar 1882 William sold two acres of his land for five dollars to the Ash Rock Cemetery Association in order to have a cemetery with the new stone church that was being built. William and his family were buried in this cemetery. In 1883 William served as treasurer for the cemetery association. The church was organized on 25 Mar 1878. Meetings were held in homes until 1880 when a sod church was built. A Baptist group helped built this church and shared it. In December 1881, the sod church fell so plans were made to build a new church. The stone was hauled from a quarry five miles away, mostly by members of the congregation. The church was completed in the spring of 1883. The first services were on March 24 for a funeral. In 1885 William appear in the Kansas Agricultural census with 40 acres of fenced land and 160 acres of land total. He had 50 acres of winter wheat, 40 acres of corn, 1 acre of Irish potatoes, and 10 acres of millet. He had 300 bushels of corn and 40 bushels of wheat on hand. He had 218 fruit trees planted. They had made 500 pounds of butter the year before. They had 4 horses, 3 milch cows, 3 head of cattle, 42 hogs, and 1 dog. William' phone number in 1904 was 18 on line 65.
