Research, Academic and Professional Involvements Editor Journal of Research in Architecture and Planning (JRAP) www.jrapneduet.edu.pk Features Editor, Archi Times, monthly newsletter of Architecture and Planning, Pakistan Assistant Coordinator of Urban Research and Design Cell at Department of Architecture and Planning at NED University of Engineering and Technology (Sep 2007-April 2011) Part of the Research project on the Lyari Corridor in Karachi, understanding its past developments and current dynamics to be able to propose its future urban design and planning strategies. It was a multi faceted study partially funded by the Asia Link Project of the European Union and the NED University, Karachi. Asia Link Project of the EU brought together the following universities; KU Leuven, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, University of Moratuwa, NED University of Engineering and Technology and CEPT on a project of, URBAN AND CITY DESIGN CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT. All these universities worked together in developing knowledge related to urban and city design issues. Part of the research entitled How people face evictions: A mutual learning project. It was a project in which organizations and popular movements in a few cities came together to document, reflect upon and share experiences of struggles against evictions, including how groups are securing rights to adequate housing, legal security of tenure and freedom from arbitrary destruction and dispossession Most of these organizations were part of groups, movements or international organizations and networks such as the International Alliance of Inhabitants, No Vox Network, Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR), SDI, COHRE, HIC, etc. The project was coordinated by Development Planning Unit (DPU) University College London, and was supported by the Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) (http://www.bshf.org). Part of the International Institute of Environmental Design (IIED) Density Research Project: This research was supervised by Architect Arif Hasan who was also the initiator of the project. He engaged the Urban Research and Design Cell (URDC) at the Department of Architecture and Planning, NED University of Engineering and Technology (DAP-NED UET), Karachi as a partner in this research through case study documentation, analysis and design alternatives formulation. The URDC Arif Hasan collaboration was formed with an intention to institutionalize the density research leading to the capacity building of the NED staff and students. Coordinator for UN-HABITAT Pakistan and Department of Architecture and Planning NED University Karachi collaborative project under the umbrella of the Sustainable Urbanization component within the Joint Program on Environment (JP-E4), envisions to build capacity to provide an effective and sustained improvement in urban poor living conditions, including urban issues relating to climate change (as a contribution to achieving MDG7D). The scope of the assignment included study and recommendation of 8 selected cities Gilgit (GB), Kech (Baluchistan) Landi Kotal (FATA), Larkana (Sind), Mansehra (KP), Muzaffarabad (AJK) and Sialkot (Punjab). Mingora in Swat, Malakand was also been selected as a city in post disaster and post conflict region.
