1 Issue 3 Volume 2 Introduction Fall Company News Report Here are a few reminders of Grubb procedures: The Grubb Dispatcher Fall is inally here and which brings with it football season, kids going back to school, and the next installment of The Grubb Dispatcher. For the third edition of the Dispatcher we have continued our branch highlight with our pro ile of Fred Day, and the Fredericksburg Branch. Along with the department updates; Safety, Steel Erection, and Maintenance we also have an interview with W.O. Grubb s Transportation Manager, Neil Kennedy. - Michelle & David, Marketing Department 1. Report all injuries/incidents and fill out an incident report completely as soon as possible. This protects you as well as the company. Injuries not reported in writing within 24 hours may not be covered. 2. Cribbing blocks under crane pads/floats must be a full layer without gaps (solid). 3. No fire arms, bows and arrows, cross bows etc. are allowed in company or personal vehicles, on Grubb property or customer property. 4. Counterweights, if your crane carries them on the deck, you must have them pinned in the working position prior to the start of lifting operations. 5. Mounting and dismounting trailers must be done from the front via the tractor, the rear via the DOT bar, or by a ladder. Do not climb on the sides or jump off the trailer. 6. Remember your PPE (including safety toe boots) is required on all job sites regardless of location. This includes Grubb property. 7. Fall protection is required in all plants when working 6 or greater off the ground. Honeywell requires the use of retractable lanyards, these can be checked out from and returned to Emmett.Yyou will be held responsible for them. 8. The new Federal crane standard will be in full effect November 2010. Some of the critical items are A) no talking on cell phones or using other such devices while operating the crane. B) You must stay 20 away from power lines. C) Operator and Signal Person certification will be mandatory. 9. Any item loaded on a truck, trailer or crane deck must have at least two forms of suitable tie down on it for securement. 10. Pocket knives can hurt you if not handled properly; use them with extreme care and only for their intended use. - Chuck Cooke, Corporate Safety Manager International Union of Operator Engineers Local # 147 Honors Grubb Employees for their years of Service. 60 Year Members Willie O. 3 Branch Manager Profile - Fredericksburg Our Fredericksburg branch began as a vision of the late Donnie Simpson and his passion for W. O. Grubb s growth and success. So, in the mid 1990 s, Simpson s vision came into focus with a vacant lot and a couple of truck cranes to more conveniently service the new growing customer demand in the Fredericksburg region. The Fredericksburg branch soon had found itself a permanent home with their current location and was a force to be reckoned with. Fred Day came up from Richmond to work with the Fredericksburg branch in 1998 as an operator, but not before some school of hard knocks training since 1990, by being an oiler for Steven Grubb on a 250 ton Link-Belt Conventional Truck Crane. He also served time being a dispatcher, truck driver and operator. After a few years of running cranes in the Fredericksburg region the natural fit would be to transition into sales. Fred worked for several years doing sales and dispatch in the Fredericksburg region. Then in 2007, the branch was dealt the blow of losing Donnie Simpson, which was followed by the collapse of the residential building market. The sequence of events had many people wondering if the Fredericksburg branch would stay in business. Fred Day grabbed the reigns and began the fight of keeping the doors open. And now after three years, Fred has reestablished the Fredericksburg branch as a successful branch with a permanent role in the company. Pictured for their branch photo from left to right is Dorothy Richardson, Fred Day, Olen Helmick, and Michelle Grubb. Outside of work, Fred enjoys time with his family in rural western Hanover County. They are all very active in sports and outdoor activities such as barrel horse racing, canoeing, and antique tractors. Project Highlights 120t. and 40 t. setting robotic shelving system at new Free Lance Star Facility in Fredericksburg. 90t. Operated by David Horne and a 40 t. 2 Steel Erection Starting between October 13th and October 20th, W.O. Grubb Steel Erection will break ground on a two month construction project of a new 115,000 square foot office building for Ortho Virginia Medical Office. The project, which will be in Boulder Business Park, will be under the supervision of Ed Walters. In conjunction with this project Grubb will be working on an ICU renovation at Chippenham Hospital as a subcontractor for R.J. Griffin as well. Also in October W.O. Grubb is looking forward to working with the U.S. Army on the construction of a new hotel at Fort Lee. The hotel which has been named the Lodge, will take Grubb just under a year to complete. History Facts Shown is a Greco-Roman five pulley crane first used in the late 6th century B.C.. This device allowed two men to hoist up to 990 lbs and replaced the labor intensive ramp system developed by the Egyptians. Later designs employed by the Romans could lift up to 60 tons!! Administrative Profile Neil Kennedy came to work for Grubb in 1993 after working in the steel fabrication and transportation industry for 25 years. At first glance people might think that the transportation manager s job would be a simple matter of keeping all of Grubb s trucks running toward the right direction. But, while talking with him it becomes quickly apparent that he has an enormous amount of responsibility. I keep our equipment legal with weights, travel, license, taxes, contracts, and permits. In any given year Neil keeps track of; thousands of different permits, licenses for every trailer, reports for the IRP and IFTA, all while making sure that Grubb operates within the law that changes several times a year. As he continued to brief me on his record keeping, equipment tracking, and court representation everything built up to prove that there is so much more to keeping our equipment moving than I could have ever imagined. He told me the most rewarding thing about his duties was the immense feeling of accomplishment and feeling like you have actually accomplished something big. It s also a great feeling to have people throughout the industry call for advice after you ve built a reputation of being an expert. When Mr. Kennedy is not busy keeping Grubb moving, he likes to keep himself moving. One of his biggest passions is traveling, I ve been to 47 states and almost all of the continents, and one day I hope to visit all the continents and all 50 states. Apart from traveling he will also find himself wrapped up in a good book or a good game of bridge. Welcome!!! Baltimore is pleased to announce the addition of A Message From the Safety Department With fall quickly approaching, we need to remember that schools are in session. That means school buses are running, children are waiting at bus stops and parents will be rushing about to get their children to and from school as well as after school activities. Also remember that time will be changing soon and the daylight hours will be getting shorter. Steve Dieren to the branch sales team. Steve brings with him over 23 years of experience in the crane rental industry in our region, working in the field, operations, and sales. He also brings with him an enthusiastic approach to the crane rental business that we all look forward to working with.

Operators Harry Parks and John Long from Portsmouth erecting an American 9310 crane for Misner Marine in Nags Head, NC. Save the Ta-Tas Larry Becker and the Portsmouth branch helped head up the annual Motorcyclists ride for the cure in Norfolk, VA. Last year the ride raised more than $34,000 for Bon Secours. This year the group raised a grand total of $36,370 which will go directly to those in need. One of Baltimore s boom trucks doing some lifts at the Hyatt Hotel in Baltimore, MD. 550 ton hydro w/ mega wing operated by Doug Radcliffe and LR1400-450 ton Crawler operated by Roland Hill, making a double pick of a coal car turner in Newport News at Pier 6 for Kinder Morgan. Aaron Richardson operatoring Alexandria s 165 ton hydro on various jobs around the D.C area.

Did you Know? Willie Grubb s first piece of construction equipment ever owned was a 1944 CAT D4. ( like one shown above) W.O. built his first crane boom in his garage. W. O. Grubb has 265 employees. Grubb has 6 branch locations, 1 Home office, and 2 storage yard. Grubb cranes have worked in 22 states. The farthest a W.O. Grubb crane has worked was Alaska in 2005. W. O. Grubb is currently the 18th largest crane owning company in North America. W.O. Grubb is currently the 48th largest crane owning company in the world. Grubb has a total lifting capacity of 17,695 tons. Grubb operates almost 200 cranes. The company was incorporated in 1967. Reminder Richmond s Mike Davenport on a Grove GMK 5120 and Alexandria s Mike Duley on a Liebherr LTM 1250 dismantling a tower crane and simultaneously erecting two more tower cranes on Canal St. in downtown Richmond, VA. Maintenance Minutes With the seasons changing and cold weather right around the corner, vehicle maintenance becomes even more important. Without the proper precautions and maintenance the cold weather can wreak havoc on our fleet. Here is a list of simple things we all can do to prevent breakdowns, costly repairs, and unsafe driving conditions. Check the antifreeze Low levels of antifreeze can cause your engine block to freeze and crack. Low Nitrate levels in the antifreeze can cause electrolysis that will destroy the engine. Stay on top of your trucks Airdryer The airdryer s air should be bled daily to prevent moisturer build up. Moisturer can freeze and lock-up your brakes and hydraulics. Don t forget to set your clocks back one hour on November the 7th for Day Light Savings time. Check the heaters and defrosters Defrosters prevent the ice from building up on your windshield which makes your truck impossible to drive. Remember this is also a good time to make sure your belts and hoses are in good working condition too!!! 5
