SOUTH VILLAGE As the residential areas at the center of the Village increased in density, development of the area southward toward route 355 also accelerated. The Hamlet apartments (now Cider Mill) had been occupied since 1971, and South Lake Elementary School and Horizon Run Condominium had both opened in 1972, but in the intervening years, the land between Lake Whetstone and what would become the Mid-County Highway had remained as open fields. In the mid-1980s, the segment of Mid-County Highway from Shady Grove Road to Montgomery Village Avenue was built and opened to traffic. CENTER STAGE 3 DOCKSIDE 5 GROVER S FORGE 7 MILLRACE 9 NATHAN S HILL 11 THE HAMPTONS 13 WALKERS CHOICE LAKE LANDING ROAD 15 WALKERS CHOICE ROAD 17 In October 1976, construction began on the Lakeforest regional shopping center, at what was considered the entrance to the Village, but in reality was on land that had been annexed by the City of Gaithersburg in 1966. In August 1978, the same year that Lakeforest Mall opened, the Articles of Incorporation were filed for South Village Homes Corporation, which now comprises 1,010 units in seven communities, all townhomes. A few months later, sales began of the Walker s Choice townhomes, which had until this time constituted an individual rental community, but were absorbed into South Village. It took a while for construction to begin on the new subdivisions in South Village, but in June 1981, models opened in the 200 clustered, back-to-back townhomes of Nathan s Hill, located on part of what had been the old Walker Farm. These townhomes are two and three stories high, with no basements, and are clustered around interior courtyards. The community name is derived from its location at the top of the hill overlooking the old Nathan Walker grist mill. Interior design of the two or three-bedroom models is similar to that of Thomas Choice West, although exteriors have fewer brick façades and are more contemporary in design. By December 1981, residents began moving into the adjacent community of Millrace, the 168 contemporary atrium townhomes that adjoin Whetstone Park and back onto the stream beds feeding into the lake. At one time, the site overlooked the old mill race of the Nathan Walker grist mill, that is, the current of water that turns a water wheel, or the channel (sluice) conducting water to or from a water wheel. Residents now enjoy easy egress to Mid-County Highway en route to the Metro or other points south. In January 1982, the Center Stage Homes Corporation merged with South Village Homes Corporation. This was not only a first in the Village, but the only instance of such a complex legal merger. The Grover s Forge community, located close to Horizon Run Condominium and South Lake Elementary School, began occupancy in July 1984. These 180 two or three-floor, two or threebedroom homes included private decks, private courtyards with brick and wood fences, private driveways and exterior storage sheds.

SOUTH VILLAGE Meanwhile, back at Lake Whetstone, Dockside models opened in August 1985. As the name implies, these 160 award winning homes, featured in a 1987 Better Homes and Gardens issue, are built along the shores of Lake Whetstone, close to the South Dock. Landscaped courtyards and atrium entries bring the natural setting closer, and, as Kettler Brothers sales materials promised, multi-level living areas provide a flexible haven for varied life-styles. Upper level lofts, outdoor balconies and terraces offer views of cormorants sunning themselves on rocks, herons circling their treetop rookerie homes on the island and geese and ducks always in motion on the water. Much later, The Hamptons, whose design echoes that of the Forest Brooke townhomes in Stedwick, opened in the late 1990s. These 158 townhomes are located next to Grover s Forge, adjacent to what is now Montgomery Village Crossing shopping area and along Odend hal and Goshen roads.

CENTER STAGE N 63 Townhouses Builder: Kettler Brothers, Inc. Models open 1974 South Village Homes Corporation The townhouse community of Center Stage was named for its location in Montgomery Village. The homes are clustered in the heart of the Village, bordering on the 30-acre South Valley Park with its quiet lakes and open green space, mature trees and rolling hills, playing fields and a commanding view of the G. W. Bowie Music Pavilion. The homes of Center Stage are larger than most contemporary townhouses and are two-story units, some of which have walkout basements. Some models have recessed front entrances, and the rear elevations were designed to have a façade similar to the front elevations. The colors of the homes were originally selected with deep-hued shades to blend the townhouses with the surrounding lakeside landscape. SV - 3
