Then you're a candidate for an outdoor storage building. It will give you plenty of extra storage space and help protect expensive equipment from the elements. This example, at the Alabama home of Milton and Gail Magnus, provides plenty of safe storage for garden tools and equipment. "We needed a place for our tools so our dog wouldn't eat them," says Gail. A separate storage building located well away from the house also means "1 '4A 1Hr...,L'l"n~n H a safe location for gasoline and other combustibles. We worked with Birmingham archi tect George Israel to develop an out building that would blend with a variety of house styles. The simple gabled roof and lap siding are at home in almost any neighborhood. The storage building shown in these photographs consists of an en dosed 8 foot-square workshop and a covered area of the same size screened with lattice. Double doors link the two spaces. A wide ramp al lows bikes, mowers, and wheelbarrows to be easily rolled in and out. The second version, detailed on the plans, is totally enclosed for weatherproof storage. George designed the structure for easy do-it-yourself construction. "We tried to think of it as something a 'weekender' could build," he says. That means there are no continuous footings or complicated foundations. Instead, six wood pasts set in concrete serve as the foundation. In the lattice-screened version, two of these posts continue all the way up to support the roof. The others support the floor.
