Man robbed while buying cell phone Sales tax bill still awaiting action By Catharin Shepard Staff writer A bill that would give oke County voters a chance to support or oppose a sales tax increase to help pay for school construction is still awaiting action by the North Carolina state Senate. ouse Bill 247, which proposes to hold a tax referendum on raising oke County s sales tax by one-half cent, has not seen a status change since it passed a third reading in the state ouse of Representatives June 16 and was referred to the state Senate s committee on rules and operations. The bill asks the General Assembly to authorize oke County to levy an additional one-half cent By Catharin Shepard Staff writer This fall, kids, teens and adults with a passion for books can help support the local library and the Raeford-oke Reading and Literacy Council by doing something they already love. The oke County Public Library is planning its first-ever overnight read-a-thon to raise money for the library and the literacy council, library director Sheila Brown Evans said. Jackie McLean of the Friends of the oke County Public Library came up with the idea as a way to fundraise to support the library s programs and the work that the literacy council does in helping children and adults become better readers. Volunteers will ask individuals and businesses for pledges for every half-hour of time they spend reading during the read-a-thon. The event will run for 12 hours overnight on a Friday evening into Saturday morning, making it easier for students attending school and working adults to participate. Organizers plan to turn the fundraiser into a yearly event. This year s theme is Read For Success, Evans said. We want to encourage students to read, not because they have to but because they want to, she said. This will give them the opportunity to also read for a good cause. We re going to have all of our readers of all ages. Readers should get pledges of sales and use tax for the purpose of school construction and renovation. The funding would be used to pay for construction of a third campus at oke igh, including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and career and technical education classrooms, a new gym, swimming pool and cafeteria. The proposed project, which would cost around $65 million including building additional classrooms at several other local schools would also require a property tax increase of between 4-9 cents per $100 valuation, depending on various funding estimates. If the bill passes in the state Senate, the oke County board of commissioners would have to Jacobs Oxendine had offered to sell him a cell phone, but then allegedly displayed a handgun and took cash from Gannon before fleeing the scene on foot. Detectives with the sheriff s office secured a warrant for Oxendine s arrest and arrested him the following day. call for a sales tax referendum before it could be put to a vote. Then, voters would get the chance to vote on the matter, likely in the May 2016 primary as there is no countywide election planned for this fall. County officials stated earlier this year that the county currently can t afford taking on the amount of debt it would take to build the proposed third campus. Commissioners raised property taxes by two cents this year to pay for county operations and services. They ve completed four drafts of the script, have the cast and crew ready to get to work and have a big goal in mind. I didn t hesitate. I m known among friends as the person who can fix things not important stuff like people s lives or anything, just lamps, switches, small machines and, I suppose, sinks. Fix it, Mister Ken, they mock, appropriating a line apparently from a children s book. As I got out of my seat, I was trying to picture what could go wrong with a sink, but I assumed she meant there was a problem with its drain or perhaps faucets. So what seems to be the problem? I asked as I reached the sink. It s not working. That was a slightly puzzling answer, I concede, but, as Fix It Mr. Ken, I am used to inadequate Copper substation on the 100 block of North orace Walters Road and stolen copper from the station.
