Racinowski, Editor/Manager Jenna Duddleston Wins MVP Volleyball Award Congratulations to Bridgeport's own Jenna Duddleston. Over Memorial weekend, Jenna played in the invitational only National Junior Conference volleyball tournament in North Aurora. Her team, 1st Alliance 17 Black, out of Lyons Township in Western Springs, beat Milwaukee Sting for the championship. Jenna was also a- warded the MVP of the tournament. Next, it was off to Orlando, Florida for the AAU Girl's Junior National Volleyball Championships at the ESPN's Wide World of Sports. One thousand one hundred and fifty teams were entered to play. One hundred and thirtyfour were entered in the 17 club division. The 1st Alliance 17 Black team went undefeated in match play. The championship match placed them against the number one seeded A5 Mizuno from Georgia. After 3 hard fought games, 1st Alliance came away with the championship. During the presentation of the All-American awards the MVP went to Jenna Duddleston. Great job, Jenna! Are You Ready for Some Football? St. Jerome School, located at 2801 S. Princeton, is once again sponsoring its Footballmania Raffle. Tickets for this exciting fun filled raffle are on sale now for $20 and are valid for the ENTIRE NFL football season. Canaryville Lions Youth Football The Canaryville Lions are still accepting registration of football players and cheerleaders for the 2010 season. Registration and practice takes place every weekday in August from 5:30 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at McInerney Playlot located at 4500 S. Halsted. The Lions are looking for boys and girls 2nd grade to 8th grade. Contact Adam at for more information. Flea Market Taylor-Lauridsen Park is now taking registration for our Annual Flea Market. Boys between the ages of 7-10 interested in joining Cub Scouting may contact Beverly Linklater at Full Day Kinderarten Registration Full Day Kindergarten Registration at Armour School begins on Monday, August 23rd. (Limited Space Available). Armour School is committed to providing a quality education during these difficult economic times. There have been substantial budget cuts in education that drastically impact early childhood and kindergarten programs. The Armour School administration and LSC recognize and value the importance these early childhood & kindergarten programs. The pre-k program will continue to be available as a half day program. The school has allocated funds to continue to provide at least one full day kindergarten class for students. Priority for these few slots are as follows: students currently enrolled in Armour pre-k, students from within attendance boundaries & students who applied to the school through Open Enrollment. When enrollment reaches capacity students will be put on the waiting list and enrolled in a half day program. If additional funds become available and there is a need, an additional full day kindergarten will be offered. Enrollment begins Monday, August 23 from 9:00a.m.- 12:00p.m. thru the start of school September 7, These few seats will fill up quickly as CPS has eliminated many full day kindergarten programs. The following documents must be provided for students new to Armour: proof of residency within attendance area, student birth certificate, physical and dental examination, and parent or legal guardian i.d. Having a Civil Marriage Blessed in the Church How can my spouse and I have our civil marriage blessed in the Church? Were you married in a non-catholic setting (on a beach or cruise ship, in a banquet hall, by a judge, justice of the peace, Las Vegas officiant, etc.), but for one reason or another never married in the Church? Perhaps a previous non-sacramental (non-catholic) marriage is part of your past. This is generally not an obstacle to a sacramental marriage; a Declaration of Nullity can usually be obtained in such cases within two weeks-with no cost involved. Maybe you were under the impression that both parties must be Catholic in order to be married in the Church. Not so. Or did the inability to host a big reception keep you from having a Church wedding. The reception is fluff. A Catholic wedding can be a very simple ceremony. The marriage of two baptized persons is a sacrament, & when no invalidating factors exist, it is to be celebrated in the presence of the Church s minister and two witnesses. In order to make it easy for civilly-married couples to have their marriages validated ( blessed ) in the Catholic Church, Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Bridgeport is hosting a COMMUNAL CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE on New Year s Eve (Friday, December 31st) at 6:00 p.m. Members of all parishes are invited, and there is no cost. If you happen to be in a civil marriage eligible for blessing in the Church, or if you would like more information, please call or Fr. Bridgeport Catholic Academy The Promethean Boards have arrived at Bridgeport Catholic Academy. A Promethean Board is an interactive white board which will engage students in learning with vivid images, video, and audio. Our teachers attended three days of training in July on how to use the board and software. Also, some of our upper grade students used the board during Ms. Bulanda's summer math class. The students really enjoyed using the board and can not wait to do more with it this school year. Children receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, Reconciliation & Confirmation must have been in our program last year. It takes more than two years to learn your religion and that is why we are now requiring that all students who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation remain in the program until the year they are to receive it. We find that the students who have been away for a year or more fall behind in their religious training and subsequently pull the rest of the class behind as well. If this is your child's first year with us please have a copy of their Baptismal certificate with you at the time of registration. Nativity of Our Lord Religious Education Program Registration for Religious Education (formerly known as CCD ) classes will take place Sunday, September 12, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass, as well as Tuesday evening, September 14th, from 6:00-7:30 in our school. Religious Education is available for public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Two years of R.E. is required for the reception of First Holy Communion and continuity throughout all eight years is required for the sacrament of Confirmation. Weekly classes resume September 21st. All R.E. classes will take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 p.m. While there is no set fee for registered, weekly-practicing Nativity parishioners, donations in any amount are gratefully accepted. Naturally, students and their families are expected to participate in the regular practice of their faith. Weekend Masses at Nativity are celebrated Saturday evenings at 5:00 p.m. & Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All are welcome! Fun at Bible School Nativity of Our Lord Parish s Vacation Bible School was again a great success, thanks to Carrie Petrulis and her host of generous adult volunteers! The National Night Out is an event held annually to help increase the awareness of the CAPS Program in the neighborhood. It is also a celebration of the success the CAPS program has had in the past. In July, the Circuit Court and several community-based organizations began outreach to Cook County neighborhoods and communities hardest hit by the mortgage foreclosure crisis by reaching out to community leaders, faith-based groups, elected officials and by sending representatives door-to-door to speak with homeowners. Homeowners are given informational packets about the program and directed to the toll-free helpline and website where they can access information about the foreclosure mediation program. Homeowners in foreclosure who wish to begin the mediation process may also now visit to fill out an online form to request an appointment with a housing counselor. This new web feature is an alternative to the toll-free helpline ( , or TDD) and is accessible to homeowners with a valid address. Eligible homeowners will receive confirmation of their appointment within 48 hours of submitting the online form (requests submitted after hours, on holidays, or on weekends will be processed starting the next business day). The mediation program, which began in April, is designed to deliver critical support and information to homeowners directly impacted by the mortgage foreclosure crisis. Since the program began, more than 1,500 homeowners have accessed the free services. The goal is to reach as many homeowners as possible to, first of all, to encourage them to come to court, and secondly, to let them know that when they do come to court they will not have to face this legal process alone. The mediation program offers an alternative method to resolve foreclosure cases. Qualified homeowners will have the opportunity to meet directly with their lenders in the presence of a neutral mediator, someone trained to facilitate communication between both parties as they work to reach an agreement about the mortgage. Funded by the Cook County Board and administered by the Circuit Court s Chancery Division, the program is an unprecedented partnership between the Circuit Court of Cook County and several state and local organizations. Together, the Circuit Court and partner organizations, including the Illinois Housing Developement Authority, The Chicago Bar Foundation and The Chicago Community Trust, are working with attorneys and mediators from the Center for Conflict Resolution, the Chicago Legal Clinic and Chicago Volunteer Legal Services to provide access to free assistance to homeowners who have received a summons to appear in court. In order to participate in the mediation program, homeowners must: Be residents of Cook County. Have received a foreclosure summons from the Cook County Court. Live in the building in foreclosure, which may be a single-family home, single-family condominium or apartment building with four or fewer units. Homeowners who have received a summons can call a toll-free help line ( , or TDD) or visit to schedule a free meeting with a housing counselor the first step in the mediation process. After meeting with a housing counselor, homeowners will have the opportunity to meet with an on-site attorney to discuss the housing counselor s recommendations and prepare for a court date that will determine whether the foreclosure case can be mediated with the lender.
