2 Lunch and Learn HOME hosted a free Lunch and Learn for housing providers. Dotty Hall, Senior Housing Counselor, coordinated the event and used the opportunity to tell attendees about HOME s Mobility Program and the benefits it offers landlords. HOME staff also presented information about hoarding disorders and recent guidance released by HUD regarding renting to people with criminal records. LaTonya Springs, Client Services Specialist, talked about how to help tenants with hoarding disorders. One of LaTonya s former clients shared her story of how her housing was affected by hoarding. The client called HOME after being served a notice to leave. The landlord agreed to give LaTonya and her client 90 days to de-clutter and clean the apartment unit. It only took about 30 days for LaTonya to bring the unit up to code. In the end, the client and landlord agreed to a mutual termination. 3 HOME wins court settlement After two years, Ingrid Anderson can keep her daughter s assistance animal, a miniature horse, on her property. The case was settled in October 2016, allowing the horse to stay on the property full time. HOME and Anderson filed the lawsuit against the City of Blue Ash in February 2014 when the city ordered Anderson to remove the horse from her property due to an ordinance violation. HOME and Anderson claimed that this violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Amendments Act. *62% of all fair housing calls received were about disability *This is a 14% increase from disability calls received in 2015 Growing Legal Partnerships HOME hosted its first continuing legal education training for local attorneys. Al Gerhardstein, Esq., (Gerhardstein & Branch Co., LPA) and Matthew Horwitz, Esq., (Southern District of Ohio Department of Justice) shared insight with attendees about building fair housing cases. The training was followed by a networking portion, where attendees could talk to representatives from local social services agencies. We re adding new tools, including videos and interactive polling software, to increase the effectiveness of our trainings. 4 Letter from the Director As 2016 draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the things I am most grateful for. Primarily among those is the talented HOME team and our decadeslong mission to fiercely advocate for fairness and equity for those in need.
