Chicago Firefighters Say Thank You Neighborhood residents waiting for the parade to donate gifts. On December 7th 2013, Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 held our 15th annual Local 2 Toy Parade, which winds its way through the Bridgeport and Canaryville communities. Over the years we have grown from providing toys to a couple hundred needy kids to serving over 3000 this past year. A few years back some of the neighbors along the parade route began bringing out gifts in support of our efforts and this kind gesture of generosity has grown incredibly ever since. Local 2 would like to acknowledge Alderman Jim Balcer, the St. Joseph s Club, the Hamburg Club, the Bridgeport Catholic Academy and everyone from the Bridgeport and Canaryville area who took part in this worthwhile cause. Between all the groups mentioned, we were able to collect over 1000 additional toys to be distributed to deserving kids all around Chicago. On behalf of all of us at Local 2, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for your participation. You have helped make a great event even greater. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the first graders at Saint Gabriel Catholic School decided to take a step in making a difference. To begin, their class read a story and watched a video about Martin Luther King Jr. They discussed how things would be different in schools and everyday life if Dr. King had not been brave and stood up for the things that he thought was right. After the story and video, the kids had a chance to listen to parts of his I have a dream speech. They were amazed at how many people gathered to hear what Martin had to say. To wrap up their lesson, the first graders were asked to draw themselves as Dr. King and make their own dreams for the world. Each child had to think of one action that would make the world we live in today a better place to live. Some of their ideas were helping the homeless, feeding the hungry, taking a stand against bullying and being kind to everyone. Our first graders learned a lot about Martin Luther King Junior and are hoping to one day make a difference the way he did. Youth Ministry Youth Center News The Blessed Sacrament Teen Center, located in McKinley Park, had its annual Christmas Party in December. There were food, drinks, stockings to decorate, homemade Christmas cookies to decorate with colorful icing, the Home Alone movies to watch, a basketball tournament, and a special guest from the North Pole - Santa! The teens were able to take photos with him and receive a gift (if they were on the nice list, of course). One of the nice list teens, Byron and Santa. While the teens were out of school for their Christmas break, the teen center offered a few special days of activities where food was served and special games were played. Over 50 teens showed up for these days! Thanks to Tom Greene, the teen center received a donation of Brookfield Zoo tickets that were given to families to use during the special Zoo Light season.the families had lots of fun and appreciated the opportunity to spend time with each other. For those high school juniors and seniors who need help preparing for the ACT, the teen center has prep classes on Wednesdays starting at 5:30pm. Contact the teen center for more information on how to sign up for these classes. Some of the older male teens have been busy in this cold winter helping people with snow shoveling. Any senior citizen needing their help is encouraged to call the teen center. Every Tuesday at 6:15pm, members of the Teen Center and the McKinley Park community meet at the corner of 36th and Marshfield to pray the rosary. The teen center not only does it for the fallen youth who have died on the streets of Chicago, but also with hope for the violence to stop. In the very cold weather, they say the rosary at the teen center. Anyone is welcomed to join them for these events. The Teen Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 3pm until 7pm. Permission granted: Taste of Home Magazine DISPLAY AD DEADLINE IS MONDAY AT 5 PM Safe Walking in Snow and Ice When Melting and Refreezing Occur Remember that falls account for more than 1M injuries in the U.S. annually. The most common type of walking accident is the slip and fall. For example the type of fall that happens when you fall walking on a sidewalk, parking lot or street not clear of snow or ice. The most dangerous part of a snow storm may be the day or days following the snow when sunny skies and higher temperatures during the day melt the snow, and lower temperatures at night refreeze the melted snow, creating a cycle that could continue for days, creating a hazardous condition for walking and driving. SIMA, the North American nonprofit organization representing the snow removal industry, has these tips on safe winter walking. TIP #1: Wear proper footwear. Proper footwear should place the entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible treads. Avoid a smooth sole and opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat bottom. TIP #2: Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. The same theory applies if you are carrying something such as grocery bags or a child-- the imbalance can cause you to slip and fall. TIP #3: Plan ahead. While walking on snow or ice on sidewalks or in parking lots, be aware of your surroundings. Instead of just looking down, pause and look up occasionally to see where your feet will move next to anticipate ice or an uneven surface. Occasionally scan from left to right to ensure you are not in the way of vehicles or other hazards. TIP #4: Conditions nice for ice. Watch for areas where melting and refreezing may persist for weeks. These areas may include parking lot drainage areas, roof gutters, piles of snow where melting and refreezing can continue for weeks. Also posing threats are areas where snow melts from overhangs and then refreezes, where melted water may pool between parking spaces or buildings, or walkways with trees dripping water on sidewalks. TIP #5: Anticipate black ice. Watch for thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night. TIP #6: Walk even slower on stairs. When walking up or down outdoor steps or stairways, be sure to grip handrails firmly and plant your feet securely on each step. TIP #7: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #8: Enter a building carefully. When you get to your destination such as school, work, shopping center, etc., be sure to look at the floor as you enter the building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice. Following these tips will help ensure that you survive the snow and ice season safely. For more snow and ice removal tips, visit SIMA. We catch on to the truth and technique of expectation in those rare moments when we are stirred by an awareness of a guidance seemingly higher and greater than our own, when for a little while we are taken over by a force and an intelligence above and beyond those commonly felt. Confident and free, filled with wonder and ready acceptance, we permit ourselves to be taken over by our unquestioning self. Marcus Bach Too many people grow up. They forget. They don t remember what it s like to be 12 years old. They patronize; they treat children as inferiors. Well, I won t do that. Walt Disney TUTORING
