Racinowski, Editor/Manager DLS Students Participate in Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Competition De La Salle Institute proudly announces that six of its students participated in the recent Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competitions. Jessica DeStefano Estefania Lanza Seniors Jessica DeStefano, Estefania Lanza, Selena Rivera and Junru Shao represented the Lourdes Hall Campus for Young Women in the regionals held at the U of I Business Innovation Services Center in Naperville along with Michael Fuchs and David Henkins from the Institute Campus for Young Men. Junru Shao Selena Rivera The sectional competition was held on March 14 at North Central College in Naperville with DeStefano, who placed second in the regionals, representing De La Salle in Chemistry, while Shao, who placed first in the regionals, represented De La Salle in Mathematics. De La Salle s WYSE coach was faculty member Roy Fleet, who teaches Physics, Honors Physics and Physical Science. Rivera ranks No. 3 in De La Salle s Class of 2013 at Michael Fuchs David Henkins the Lourdes Hall Campus with a grade-point average. DeStefano (4.450, 6/84), Lanza (4.225, 10/84) and Shao (4.179, 11/84) also have prominent academic rankings. Fuchs holds a GPA and is No. 1 in the 152member Class of 2013 at De La Salle s Institute Campus for Young Men, while Henkins (3.769) is ranked No. 35. De La Salle congratulates all of these students on their achievements and wishes them every future success. 28th Annual Hunger Walk Union Avenue UMC Food Pantry Wilson C.C. Summer Camps The Wilson Community Center located at 3225 S. Racine is now taking registration for the Day Camp & Sports Camp. There are still slots available for both camps. Day Camp for children ages 6-12 will run for six weeks beginning July 1st and ending August 9th. Activities will include: sports, crafts, swimming, special events, field trips & lunch daily. Park for more information at McGuane Park Summer Programs The Union Avenue United Methodist Church team is looking for walkers to participate in the Hunger Walk on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Soldier Field. The Hunger Walk is an annual 5K (3.1 miles) at Soldier Field, registration starts at 7 AM; step off at 8:30 AM. The funds raised by this team will help directly support the UMC Food Pantry (agency #A00863). Remember to include our agency #A00863 on your walk registration form or check. Wilson Playground Activities Movies In the Parks sponsored by the Chicago Park District will be hosting a night out at the park on Sunday, June 30, John P. Wilson Playground located at 1122 W. 34th Place. We will be starting the afternoon with a Block Party from 4:00pm-6:00pm. There will be a jumping Jack, music & free hot dogs will be given out between the hours of 4:00-6:00pm. The Movie will begin at dusk (approx. at 8:30pm). The movie that we will be showing is Little Zizou. It s a delightful comedy about two Parsi families in Mumbai. So bring out your families for a FREE night out at the park. St. Gall s Cub Scout Pack 3697 Attends Pause for Patriotism Pause for Patriotism is a weekend long event held to honor our current and past members of the US Military. It was held from May 17th thru 19th at River Road Park in Kankakee. Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts from many different councils were in attendance. Activities included a fireworks show, night hike, Presentation of Colors and Opening Ceremony, fishing tournament, Dutch oven cook off, live music preformed by four different bands, kickball tournament, games, military vehicle show, geocaching, patch trading, Vietnam War reenactment, campfire songs and skits and camping. Members of St. Gall Cub Scout Pack 3697 attended. School Highlights from St. Barbara The fourth grade class of St. Barbara Catholic School was always very busy working on their everyday school subjects like Math, Spelling, English, Social Studies and Science. In science they learned about the life cycle of plants. To enhance their learning experience of plants, Mrs. LoPiccolo, the fourth grade teacher, brought soil, foam cups, plastic wrap and various seeds including Zinnia flowers, cucumber, tomatoes, sunflower and peppers. Each boy and girl had the chance to plant one of each and watch the germination process. T h e y m a d e s u r e their seeds had plenty of food (sun, water and a little TLC). Sad to report that the Zinnias did not do too well. However, the sunflowers, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers were off to a great start, especially the cucumber plants, when school ended. What a wonderful way to learn the life cycle of each of the plants mentioned amrs. LoPiccolo and her fourth grade students. bove. The students took them home at the end of the school year and hopefully will be able to plant them in the ground and have wonderful fruit and beautiful flowers this summer. The students will get to eat the fruits of their labor when the plants produce tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The bees and birds will get to feed on the flowers and pollinate further enhancing the beauty of our city. Good luck with your plants fourth graders! Santa Lucia School News All About Oceans The students in the Santa Lucia Educational Enrichment Program learned a lot about the oceans and ocean animals during the first week of the summer program. They painted murals, sorted sea creatures & even baked cookies in the shapes of mermaids, fish & various ocean animals. This first unit of the summer enrichment experience culminated with a trip to Chicago s Famous Shedd Aquarium on Friday, June 21. This is an open meeting and all are invited. PAC meetings are a great way for neighbors to tell the Park District what they want at their parks. The McGuane field house is located at 2901 South Poplar. Please make plans to attend the joint meeting and share your ideas for making our parks a better place for the whole community. The design for the new McGuane playground will be displayed. Thank you to all the neighbors who helped us get this great new play space for our children. The next Palmisano park stewardship day is on Saturday, July 13, from 10 AM 1 PM. Volunteers are needed to help clear the Palmisano Nature Park of invasive plant species and trash. This will be an outdoor event filled with live performances and fun that will bring back the great memories of the King of Rock and Roll. The concert will be held THIS SATURDAY, JUNE 29th starting at 7:30pm at the Canaryville Little League Ballpark (located on the corner of 45th and Normal Place). Although Elvis has been gone for 30+ years, the man is still singing and will be doing so on JUNE 29th! Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka joined representatives and volunteers from the American Cancer Society at the Thompson Center in Chicago recently to celebrate the organization's 100th Birthday and promote participation in a new Cancer Prevention Study. The Cancer Society launched its first Prevention Study nearly 60 years ago and conducted a follow-up study years later. The pair of investigations led to important discoveries such as the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer and the role obesity plays in the risk of several cancers. Topinka and Cancer Society leaders encouraged residents to enroll for a third study. "Cancer Prevention Study -3 is an unprecedented opportunity for Illinois residents to get involved and make a difference," Topinka said. "It's a chance to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations." In addition to Topinka, volunteer champion and President of the American Cancer Society's leadership board, Claire Thibodeaux spoke about her involvement and experiences with the cancer research effort. CPS-3 is a historic research study that gives scientists a better understanding of cancer causes, prevention and treatment. The Society is looking for local men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 from various racial/ethnic backgrounds with no personal history of cancer to help reach full enrollment of at least 300,000 people. Researchers say CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks. They will use data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from earlier cancer prevention studies, which began in the 1950s and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteer participants. City of Chicago Rolls Out Phase Two of the 2013 Citywide Recycling Expansion The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation will roll out blue cart recycling services to approximately 61,000 households beginning this week as part of the second phase of the 2013 citywide expansion, a key 2013 budget initiative for the Mayor. By offering Chicagoans better access to recycling services, we can make a greater impact on our environment by preserving natural resources, decreasing the amount of waste sent to landfills and reducing our carbon footprint, said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I am committed to ensuring every community can participate in the blue cart recycling program by the end of The blue cart recycling program provides bi-weekly recycling collection services to residents who live in single family homes, two-, three- and four-flat buildings. Once phase two is complete, approximately 450,000 households will have blue cart services. The department will roll out recycling services to the remaining 150,000 households by the fall of The blue cart residential recycling program is a single stream recycling system in which all recyclable materials are collected and transported together. Recyclables are picked up and transported in designated recycling trucks to avoid contamination with regular garbage. Materials are taken to a city-approved recycling center where they are sorted into separate materials, called commodities, then baled or packaged for delivery to manufacturers who reprocess or reuse the materials to make new products. In October of 2011, Mayor Emanuel implemented a managed competition for recycling services in an effort to create efficiencies and reduce operational costs to taxpayers. In one year, the competition de-creased recycling costs by $4.7 million and paved the way for the citywide recycling expansion. Subsequent phases will be announced as collection schedules and routes are finalized. Chicago s recycling service providers include the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation, Sims Municipal Recycling and Waste Management.
