2 THE NEED FOR LAND ADMINISTRATION EDUCATION Governments recognise more and more the role of land and the importance of good land administration Training institutions and universities are stimulated and supported by their governments to set up programs in land administration Remarkable growth of academic programs in land administration in Eastern Africa in the last five years THE ROLE OF YOUNG GRADUATES Master of Science Programme in Land Management, at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden. Capacity building and supporting development of national Bachelors programs in Land Administration at universities in 4 countries: Bahir Dar University (Ethiopia) Kenya Polytechnic University College (Kenya) Ardhi University (Tanzania) Makerere University (Uganda) 2

3 THE EASTERN AFRICA LAND ADMINISTRATION ACADEMIC NETWORK Young graduates from KTH returned to their Universities to become lecturers and to develop Land Administration Bachelor s programs In 2010 the SIDA supported project with KTH came to an end: The four Eastern African universities decided to continue to work together in order to harmonise their BSc programs in Land Administration Start of the Eastern Africa Land Administration Academic Network (EALAAN). NEW UNIVERSITIES AND INSTITUTIONS THAT JOINED The following institutes also initiated land administration education programs and joined the EALAAN: INES Ruhengeri (Rwanda) National University Rwanda (NUR), (Rwanda) Woldia University (Ethiopia) RCMRD, Nairobi, (Kenya) 3

4 BACHELOR PROGRAMS Bahir Dar University (Ethiopia) Started in 2006 with first course In 2012 intake of 120 students Also distance and evening programs Woldia University (Ethiopia) Started in October 2012 First intake of 60 students Kenya Polytechnic University College (Kenya) Started in 2010 the first course In January 2013 intake of 40 students BACHELOR PROGRAMS INES Ruhengeri (Rwanda) Program developed in cooperation with members of EALAAN (KPUC, BDU) Started in September 2012 with 40 students Ardhi University (Tanzania) Curriculum developed No yet started Makerere University (Uganda) Developed a Bachelor s curriculum Not approved by University Council: preference for Master 4

Kenya Polytechnic University College (Kenya) Developing MSc curriculum Makerere University (Uganda) MSc Curriculum ready; start in 2013 MSc Research and MSc Courses&Project 5
