Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand Ltd IES AWARDS AND MEMORIALS OTHER THAN LIGHTING AWARDS INTRODUCTION This document gathers together into one consolidated document descriptions about, and Rules for all of the various IES Awards and Memorials (other than lighting awards) that have been established. This includes those created by the previous five Australian Regional Societies together with the previous New Zealand Society, prior to the establishment of the single entity Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IES The Lighting Society), on 1st July These Awards are now referred to as Chapter Awards. In addition, the recently formed IESANZ Ltd Board has created a new award, the President's Citation Award, which was introduced in year The Board has also assumed responsibility for the previous IES National Council s, and more recently the former IESANZ Central Council's, Ernest Freedman Memorial Award that is now incorporated into the Bylaws of the new Society. Each of the Chapters has provided information about their respective awards and memorials and this has enabled this consolidated document to be prepared. In a few instances, recent Chapter Management Committee members, have been unaware of the origin of an award and recourse has been made to the vitally important historical document "The Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia - National Council " prepared by the late Ernest Freedman, to provide the essential background historical information to understanding why these awards were made in the first instance. It is hoped that this document will provide the necessary information to enable the regular continuation of these now quite historical IES awards, and in some instances also inform newcomers to the Society about the background to their illustrious forbears who established the IES Regional Societies and the early Chapters and created the basis for the professional reputation this Society has today. 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 1 of 20

SOCIETY AWARDS PRESIDENT S CITATION AWARD: This Award was instigated by the IESANZ Board following a report proposal by Richard Ponting, a Board member representing New Zealand, on 13 th April He wrote It is a legitimate part of any Society wishing to recognize a particular service or excellence. It will only work to its full potential however when the justification for the award is sound and full recognition is made in Society Journals (Lighting and IES web site). It should be appreciated that the award need not be made every year. The programme does not require a high level of management input and could largely be conducted electronically until the award ceremony that might coincide with a Presidential visit to the Chapter of the member concerned, or at a Convention. 1. The award is not made on application but is made at the discretion of the President, who may seek advice on the matter from the Board and Chapter Presidents, to a member for outstanding technical expertise and/or service to the Society during any one particular year. [Note: Provision already exists for the award of special membership grades for acknowledging continuous high service.] 2. A typical recipient might be: The organizer of a highly successful Convention The designer of a landmark installation The author of an outstanding technical paper 3. The recipient may already hold honoured positions such as FIES or Honorary grades. 4. The award will consist of a framed certificate of Citation. Recipients: 2004: Neil Midolo For service as a foundation member of the Board and especially for his work as Society Treasurer. 2006: Trevor Stork For service as co-opted member of the Board, and President, and for his contribution to lighting education in Victoria. 2007: Dr Warren Julian: For services to the Society as Editor of the Society's magazine, "LIGHTING" and as a member of the Society's Status & Qualifications Committee for many years. ERNEST FREEDMAN MEMORIAL AWARD: After being General Secretary and official historian of the Society for many years the then IES Australia National Council decided to honour his memory by funding specially invited speakers at Conventions to present a lecture in his name. Ernest Freedman authored: The Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia: National Council This comprised over 250 typewritten pages and appendices of data describing the foundation of the Regional Societies leading to the creation of a federated body in Australia known as the IES National Council. He also wrote a large unpublished and only partly edited tome of over 300 pages on the history of the NSW Society. The Rules for this award were incorporated in the Bylaws of the new 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 2 of 20

Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand Ltd when this commenced on 1st July Mick Trounson (Victoria) advised that the late Jim Lowson (Victoria) was the first recipient of this award and that it was a trophy in the form of a glass prism, but no-one knows where it is located at this time. Subsequently, the IES NSW Society decided to adopt the same rules. However, when the single entity Society was formed the Board-elect decided on the following Award Rules which followed the previous IES Central Council rules: 1. As part of its function, the Society s Convention Committee shall administer the E.L. Freedman Memorial Fund and recommend to the Board the amount of monies to be offered to the Chapter hosting the Convention for the E.L. Freedman keynote speaker(s) at the Society Convention. 2. The IES Board may offer a sum of money from the general revenue to the host Chapter to obtain keynote speakers for the Society s Convention from overseas or interstate who might not otherwise be available. 3. The E.L. Freedman speaker shall be an eminent person in the art and science of illumination or in some related area as determined by the respective Chapter. The E.L. Freedman speaker shall be required to submit a written paper for publication in IES journals. 4. The host Chapter shall be responsible for inviting one or more speakers to present the E.L. Freedman keynote address(s). The address shall include a short reference to E.L. Freedman. KLAUS ENGELHARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 1. Purpose: To provide a scholarship that will pay the tuition fees for a student to undertake the lighting course at either the University of Sydney, RMIT in Melbourne or Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and, on completion, to visit the OSRAM headquarters in Germany. Lighting Council Australia, OSRAM Australia and the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand (IES: The Lighting Society) provide the scholarship to encourage the study of lighting design and as a memorial to Klaus Engelhard, one of the first students to undertake lighting design studies at the University of Sydney. Klaus Engelhard s studies were important in his becoming Managing Director of OSRAM Australia. 2. Value: The value of the scholarship is sufficient to meet the fees charged for the completion of the GradCertDesSc (Illumination) plus the unit Lighting Design at University of Sydney or the Graduate Certificate in Lighting plus one unit Lighting Applications at Queensland University of Technology or the Graduate Certificate program component of Cert IV Electrical Engineering at RMIT. Note that ongoing funding of the scholarship is dependent on successful completion of progressive course requirements. On completion of the requirements for the award at either of the three University courses, OSRAM Australia will supply a return trip to Germany to visit the OSRAM facilities. The travel component to the OSRAM factories will be arranged between the student and OSRAM. 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 3 of 20

NEW SOUTH WALES CHAPTER AWARDS A P TURNBULL AWARD: From the late Ernest Freedman's document "The Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia - National Council " we find the following description of the AP Turnbull Award: "In we quote from the "history of the New South Wales Society (Freedman writes) - "the first President of the Society, now an Honorary member, Mr AP Turnbull, accepted yet another honour: an award to be named after him and made to that member who, during the current year, most conspicuously advanced the aims and objects of the Society, to be known as the AP Turnbull Award. It consisted of a suitably engraved silver cigar box, presented to the Society by an anonymous donor. The recipient of the award was to be selected by the members of the Executive and Finance Committee, chaired by the President. The first AP Turnbull Award was won by W Allen Smith for his work in connection with the IES Exhibition and for his untiring efforts in presenting the IES School Lecture on many occasions. It was sad indeed to hear shortly afterwards of the passing of Mr Turnbull on December 12th, 1955, at the age of eighty years." The AP Turnbull Award, with but few exceptions, has since been awarded each year. The box, presented..., and inscribed with the recipient's name over the President's facsimile signature, is presented at the Annual Dinner of the NSW Chapter, combining a fitting and lasting tribute to its first President with recognition for those who followed." 1. Salmon, first chairman of the Society and to mark his retirement from business, to introduce a perpetual award to be known as The S J Salmon Award. The award is made to the author adjudged to have given the best technical paper to the Society during a particular year. The award consists of an inscribed medal, presented at the annual general meeting. The first recipient was the late J C Lowson, and the late Denis C Irving was given the Award on three occasions. Times have changed and people no longer present written papers but more frequently digitally created slide projected presentations with no written material at all. In addition, it is now rare for anyone to speak on Illuminating Engineering. Consequently the rules were amended in 1990 to refer to any subject relating to the art and science of lighting. 1. This annual award is to be made for the best presentation on any subject relating to the art and science of lighting by a member at a monthly meeting of the Victoria Chapter. 2. This award was inaugurated in 1978 at the time of his retirement. 1. This award is given to the best student in the second year of the IES lighting course at the Royal Melbourne University of Technology (RMIT University). 2. The student is chosen by course lecturers. [In year 2007 these were Ian Johnson and Trevor Stork.] DR ALBERT DRESLER MEMORIAL LECTURE: The minutes of the eighteenth annual meeting of the National Council of the Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia held in Adelaide on 12th, 14th and 15th November 1963 records some of the reactions and actions of the Society to the death of Dr Albert Dresler in July The high standing in which the memory of Dr Albert Dresler was held in both Australia and UK is recorded. One year later, in the minutes of the nineteenth annual meeting of 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 13 of 20

the National Council of the Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia held in Perth, Western Australia, on 10 November 1964, it was recorded that: The meeting considered it would be most desirable to honour the memory of the late Dr. A Dresler in a suitable and permanent form. Mr. Hardy (Victoria) indicated that the Victoria Society had obtained a note from Mrs. Dresler in which she expressed her appreciation for any action the Society decided to take to perpetuate the memory of Dr. Dresler. Some ideas which were considered were - a medal to be awarded to the outstanding student of the year; an award on an international basis for outstanding lighting research, development, or education; an award restricted to Australia for outstanding lighting research, development or education; and a memorial lecture at the National Convention. The meeting decided in favour of a memorial lecture of a very high standard. So that the standard would be maintained at a high level it was agreed that it would be desirable not to hold the lecture every year - wherever possible the subject and the speaker of the memorial lecture should be decided upon some twelve months before its delivery. The meeting felt that holding a memorial lecture every five years when the National Convention was being held in Melbourne, Dr Dresler s home state, would be most appropriate. It was decided that the selection of a person to deliver the memorial lecture should be referred to National Council executive and that if a State Society, other than Victoria, could obtain a suitable speaker for a memorial lecture at a National Convention held in its own State, it should feel free to refer the name to National Council for consideration. The meeting felt that as the standard of the memorial lecture should be kept very high, if a suitable speaker could not be obtained on any occasion it would be preferable not to hold the memorial lecture at that time. It was then resolved: That National Council honours the memory of the late Dr. Albert Dresler by the establishment of the Albert Dresler Memorial Lecture. 1. The Albert Dresler Memorial Lecture shall be delivered at the Society Convention in Melbourne and at such other Conventions as the IESANZ Board may decide. 2. The Lecture shall be delivered by invitation and preferably be an original technical paper. 3. The name of the proposed speaker shall be submitted by the Victoria Chapter to IESANZ Board for their approval not later than at least three months prior to the date of the lecture. 4. The paper shall be published. Note: In 1964 the first Albert Dresler Memorial Lecture was delivered at the IES Convention held in Perth, Western Australia, to be followed by others at irregular intervals through to the last IES Convention held in Melbourne in Eleven Memorial Lectures have so far been delivered up to year DR ALBERT DRESLER DAYLIGHT EXCELLENCE AWARD: First established in 2012, this award celebrates the use of daylight design in architecture, and is open to projects completed in the Victoria and Tasmania in the previous two (2) years. Membership of the IES is not a requirement. 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 14 of 20

Projects of all sizes are invited to enter, from the smallest renovations to the largest infrastructure projects. Projects will be judged on following criteria: 1. Research and analysis of daylight in the design process 2. Environmental performance of the daylight design strategy 3. Human Comfort 4. Experiential Outcome Entry forms, Conditions of Entry and Assessment Criteria can be downloaded from the Victoria/Tasmanian Chapter web site. For general enquiries, please the Award Convenor: In 2012 the Dr Albert Dresler Daylight Excellence Award Winner was the National Centre for Synchrotron Science by Bates Smart. OTHER HONOURED PAST MEMBERS: R J NOTT: R.J. Nott is honoured by giving his name to a library. The R J Nott Collection is a collection of books and periodicals on lighting and related subjects. [NOTE: The R J Nott Collection is presently removed from the Victoria University and has been placed in temporary storage. It is currently unavailable for member's access.] It was housed at the Footscray Campus of Victoria University of Technology on behalf of the Illuminating Society of Australia and New Zealand. Members of the Society may borrow items in the collection. Books may be borrowed and copies of periodical articles obtained through any library on inter-library loan using the Australian Interlending Code. The requesting library may be an academic library (university, college of advanced education or TAFE), a public or municipal library with inter-library loan facilities, or the Society s head office or branch offices. Items may be requested for loan from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, but they are only available to Society members, and to bona fide students undertaking research in lighting courses accredited by RMIT and similar institutions. The loan request must come through the proper inter-library loan channels ie, a library which adheres to the Code, or it must come through the Society s head office or branches. When making a request, evidence of membership of the Society is required. An explanation should be given to the borrowing library that membership of the Society is a condition of loan, and the librarian asked to record membership details with the inter-library loan request. If there is no evidence of membership then Victoria University cannot lend the item. 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 15 of 20

Members who wish to borrow in person by coming in to the Library may do so, but once again must supply proof of IESANZ membership. The University Library will accept inter-library loan vouchers or credits for each item borrowed. These must be supplied by the borrowing library that may pass these costs on to the Society member. A PDF file catalogue listing of the contents of the R J Nott Collection can be downloaded from the IES web site using PDF program software. T K JEBB: According to Ernest Freedman in his "The Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia - National Council in November 1964 Professor H P Tuck proposed at the AGM of the Hobart Chapter of the Victoria Society to create a T K Jebb Memorial Prize to commemorate the service rendered by the late T K Jebb to the study of illuminating engineering, with particular reference to encouragement of illuminating engineering in Tasmania, and to encourage students to advance their studies in illuminating engineering. This was adopted by resolution of the Victoria Council in June After discussion with the Director of Technical Education in Tasmania it was agreed to award the TK Jebb Memorial Prize to the best student in Electrical Engineering I in each centre, the award to be made each year by the Department in cooperation with the Society s Chapters in Hobart and Launceston. Funds totalling $ from 49 contributors were to purchase a textbook to the value of $10.00 in each case, and to be provided from income received by investment of the fund principal, supplemented as necessary from Society funds. 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 16 of 20

She studied survey drafting and architecture at the Perth Technical College and took a course in History of Architecture at the University of Western Australia. She became a member of the Architectural Association of Western Australia. She specialised in glass research and did practical work at Pilkington Bros., St Helens, England. After a study tour of The Netherlands and Germany organised by the two respective governments, she became a member of the Housing Centre Trust in London. She was, for 15 years, a member of the Inter-Society Colour Council of USA. Gwen Ewens was a tireless lecturer on architectural design, interior decoration, lighting, colour and vision; lecturing at the University of Western Australia for the Adult Education Board, and the Technical Education Division of the Department of Education in Western Australia. She presented her first paper 'On the production, properties and utilisation of glass' to the IES in Western Australia in In 1951, she joined the IES WA Council and served on most of the Council's committees. She acted as secretary when the need arose, contributing her vast experience in Society affairs to the continuity of the IES in Western Australia. She was elected on the National Council in November 1966 and remained on the Council to November 1972, when she retired from the National Council and, in 1975, also from the IES Council in Western Australia because of pressing family commitments. Gwen was dedicated to the IES and all the Society stands for. She was for many years the Western Australia representative on the National Lighting Education Board, and the State editor of the IES Lighting Review (now "Lighting" magazine). Every five years, Gwen Ewens would become the rallying point for the IES national conferences and conventions in Western Australia. She often acted on the program committee, meetings committee, social committee, facilities committee, publicity committee, and as public relations officer, all in one. On 20 November 1975 Gwen was elected a Life Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Societies of Australia in recognition of her work "as a member of the National Council and, in particular, as a long-standing supporter of that Council in her home state, Western Australia". On behalf of the Society, a small number of members attended Gwen's funeral in Perth on 21 February 1995 to pay their final respects to this fine lady. In a letter to the IES Western Australia Council 4 years before her death, accompanied by a sum of money, Gwen Ewens wrote "I wish to contribute something to help promote the Society to advance their aims...i would, also, like to focus some attention with regard to the human element in the lighting field today. This may require the co-operation of allied professions". 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 17 of 20

On behalf of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Western Australia, it is my great pleasure to remember her wish through the staging of "The Gwenyth Ewens Memorial Lecture" - a dedication to the memory of Gwenyth Ewens, and through her sponsorship of our keynote speaker, Mr/Ms/Dr... 4 th Edition. 12 July 2013 Page 18 of 20
