HISTORY OF PULICKAPARAMB FAMILY FROM 1678 AD PART 1 CHAPTER I Ittoop Panicker ITTY of Ambumkayam (Mallappally) Daughter married and settled in Vazhapally, Changanassery Ittoop Itty Chapter II Daughter no record Ittoop Itty ITTOOP PANICKER The Pulickaparamb family traces its descent from Ittoop Panicker a member of Ambumkayam family in Mallappally. The members of this family were Jacobite Syrian Christians and were parishioners of the Kalluppara Syrian Christian Church, owing allegiance to the Holy See of Antioch. Written manuscripts kept by the family show that Ittoop was born in 1678 AD but they say nothing about the other members of the family except that his father s name was Itty and that he had a sister married and settled down in Changanassery. Early in life Ittoop became an orphan. Coming under the protection of a Kalari Asan (school teacher) named Pullu Thattan, Ittoop got trained under him in the Kalari and became an expert in one of the oldest forms of marshal art called Kalaripayattu and other arts taught by his guru. He became his guru s favourite disciple, but later on due to some misunderstanding between them, Ittoop had to leave his native village, taking with him his weapons and a few manuscripts. These were the whole of his material possessions that he had during his flight. In the course of his wanderings, he took a wife from a poor Christian family. After some time they reached his sister s house in Vazhapally near Changanassery. Later on, Ittoop and his wife continued their journey to Kottayam; he was accompanied by his nephew Ittoop Itty. He desired to settle down in Kottayam. For that he sought the help of one Kuruppum Kaimal, a landlord and a chief at Aymmanam. Through him Ittoop met the local Raja of Pulickal Chempakassery. The Raja, impressed by Ittoop s knowledge of Kalaripayattu and other arts, granted him a plot of land in Aymmanam to settle down. Since this plot of land belonged to Pulickal 1

Chempakassery Raja, it came to be called Pulickal Parambu and that later on became the family name of Ittoop and his descendants. Ittoop then started a Kalari and helped the raja by teaching the Raja s dependants in the neighbouring villages of Aymmanam, Kummanam and Mariathuruth. Pleased by Ittoop s service, the Raja conferred on him the title Panicker with the right for him and his descendants to bear it. So now his house was often referred to as Panikarottu, the place of residence of the Panicker. While Ittoop was conducting his Kalari at Aymmanam, his guru, Pullu-Thattan from Mallappally visited him and Ittoop gave him guru dakshina (presents due to a teacher) and other valuable presents. Thus Ittoop became reconciled with his teacher once more. Ittoop Panicker had a son and a daughter. Nothing is recorded in the manuscripts about his daughter. His son was named Ittoop Itty, as was his nephew too. Both of them received their training in Ittoop s Kalari and both became experts in Kalaripayattu and other arts. There were certain disputes regarding Ittoop s family possessions at Vazhapally, so he took his nephew with him to Vazhapally to claim their share of inheritance. They petitioned the local Chieftain, but his enemies there fearing that the decision of the Chieftain will be in favour of Ittoop, they attempted to remove them from the scene by poisoning their food. Ittoop Panicker succumbed to the poison at the age of 42 and died (1720). However his nephew survived and took his uncle s body from Vazhapally to Kottayam in a country boat (Vallom) and duly buried him in the presence of his relatives, friends and disciples at Kottayam Cheriapally cemetery, close to the church on the northern side of it. The death of his uncle was a great blow to Ittoop Itty. With it he lost all hopes of reclaiming his parental property at Vazhapally. However, by this time he had earned the favour of the Pulickal Chempakassery Raja, who granted him also the title of Panicker. When married, he had a son, who was named Itty Ittoop and a daughter, and he shifted with his family from his cousin s house, by building another house in Muttumpurath Parambu, near Manikandsseril Thodu (thodu means rivulet) in Aymmanam and resided there. Unfortunately some, who were envious of his prosperity, spoke ill of him to the Raja. The Raja s displeasure resulted in Ittoop Itty being imprisoned. Finally he was ransomed for three thousand and one panam (panam a gold coin, coin currency used in Kerala during that time). In order to raise the money, he had to sell a major portion of his property. Fearing the raja s displeasure, Ittoop Itty left Aymmanam with his son and wife and went to Pulinkunnu village and settled down in Kannadikara. His Muttumpurath property and house were given to his married daughter. Since all his neighbours at Pulinkunnu were Roman Catholics, he also accepted that faith. His descendants claim that they are also members of the Pulickaparamb family because according to their history, Ittoop Itty who left 2

Aymmanam and settled down in Pulinkunnu was not the nephew of Ittoop Itty, but his oldest son. ITTOOP ITTY CHAPTER II Ittoop Itty, the only son of Ittoop Panicker, was born in the Pulickaparamb house at Aymmanam in He was also trained by his father and became an expert in Kalaripayattu and conducted a Kalari. ITTY ITTY Itty Cherian Itty Uthup Itty Itty Itty Kurien The members of this branch of the family continued as parishioners of Kottayam Cheria Pally. But when a Jacobite church was built in Kumarakom, they became parishioners of that church. CHAPTER II B ITTY KOCHU POTHEN (Parambil) was the second son of Ittoop Itty. He shifted his residence from Pulickaparamb family house to a house he constructed Kulangara Parambil or Parambil, a property in Aymmanam itself. He was an expert Physician especially in treating eye diseases. Being very shrewd and capable, he earned large possessions besides a major portion of the family property. Itty Kochu Pothen had only one son called Itty who had one son and a daughter. But this son died early and so the daughter Oonichi became heiress. She was married to Ullahannan Kandamundaril, Aymmanam, and he was adopted into the family. Itty Kochu Pothen Son died young Oonichi (daughter) m Ullahannan Kandamundaril Itty Tharakan Itty, the son of Itty Kochu Pothen died while his father was alive and was buried at Kottayam Cheria Pally Cemetery. Kochu Pothen lived long enough to see the birth of his one and only grandson by his daughter, Oonichi. Kochu Pothen was also buried inside the Kottayam Cheria Pally. Ullahannan Kandamundaril, adopted into the Parambil family, received the title Tharakan. In his time the Jacobite Syrian Christians of Aymmanam constructed the St. George Jacobite Church at Kallumkathra. So he became a parishioner of this church and when he died he was buried in the cemetery 4

He married Mariam, Alakkaprambil Areparambu. They had four children, three daughters and the last a son also named Itty Itty. When his son was a young child (aged three), Itty Itty died suddenly at the age of 37; he was struck by lightning when returning with his friends from Valiad in Aymmanam. He was duly buried in Kottayam Cheria Pally cemetery, on the northern side of the church. Itty Itty m Mariam daughters Itty Itty Chapter III The sudden death of her husband caused much misery to Mariam, his wife. Her daughters were not married and her son was only a child. She and her daughters lived in their house with much financial strain during the years when her son Itty Itty had his Kalari training. At first he stayed with his uncle Kochu Pothen at Parambil house and had his training at Aymmanam. Later he continued his training at Areparambu, residing with his maternal grandfather. At the age of 12, he returned and lived with his mother and sisters. When Itty Itty married and had children, his mother and sisters shifted their residence to a small house built in a property at Olesha, belonging to Olesha 5

Chirattmon Mossuth, but was in the possession of her brother-in-law, Parambil Kochu Pothen. Miriam managed a shop, the property where Mr P K Jacob Parambil was resident in Kochu Pothen did not like his sister-inlaw staying in his property and so she was forced to leave it. At this, her son Itty Itty purchased another property close to it on the northern side of Yenadi Thodu, in September 1815 and built a house there for his mother and sisters to reside (Mr P C George, Pulickaparambil was in possession of this house and property in 1986). When Miriam became sick in October 1816, Itty Itty with his wife and children moved into this house to look after his mother. He gave the property and house at Aymmanam to his second daughter Kunjamma and husband Kurian, Madacheril. Mariam died on 24 th November 1816 and was buried at Kottayam Cheria Pally cemetery, on the northern side of the church. ITTY ITTY CHAPTER III Itty Itty the only son of Itty Itty and Mariam was born on 2 nd February His father died when he was only three years old. After that he stayed with his paternal uncle Kochu Pothen for two years, and then continued his Kalari training for seven years at Areparambu, residing with his maternal uncle and grandfather. At the age of 12 he returned to his house at Aymmanam and had to take up the responsibility of maintaining his mother and sisters by hard labour. During this struggling period he received little help from his uncle Kochu Pothen. His own hard endeavours and his skill as an Ayurvedic Physician enabled him to better his financial position. He came to be known as Itty Vaidhyan (means physician). He married Kunjanna, daughter of Cheria Ullahannan, of Kottaparambil, Aymmanam. They had five daughters and two sons.
