Crowley was born on May 13, 1939 in Chicago, the oldest daughter of Patrick and Patricia C. Crowley, founders of the Christian Family Movement. She became a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago in 1958, and went on to receive her B.A in 1965 from Mundelein College and in 1970 her M.A. in Catechetical Theology from Manhattan College. She taught at St. Scholastica Academy until 1979 when she began her social service work in community and homelessness initiative at Howard Area Community Center where she was the Executive Director for ten years. In 1991, after spending two years traveling abroad in Central America studying how poor women organize themselves politically, she began her thirteen year tenure at Deborah s Place as Executive Director, a not for profit organization that offers support and housing to homeless women in Chicago. She also served as Executive Director for the Chicago Continuum of Care and served during the consolidation with the Partnership to End Homelessness in Chicago. Over time Crowley received numerous awards for her dedication and work in the initiative to end homelessness and awareness of the prison system and its contribution to homelessness. Scope and Content The majority of materials in this collection pertain to Patricia A. Crowley s career and social involvement with homelessness in Chicago. The collection also includes notes and work on speeches she presented for these causes. The family and personal papers included in the collection pertain to her mother and father, Pat and Patty C. Crowley. There is also an AV series which include photographs from her family and professional life, scraps books, and a CD. The collection has been divided into four series and is arranged alphabetically through the series. Series 1: Family and Personal, , n.d., Boxes 1-4 Patricia A. Crowley, pg. 1

2 Contains materials relating to Patricia A. Crowley s childhood, correspondence, report cards, immunization cards, retirement, a retreat, and family. A significant amount of this series is dedicated to Patty C. Crowley which includes her papers from groups she was involved in as well as address books, date books, guest books, and journals which recorded her health in her later years. Other materials include a dismantled scrapbook and the paperwork and planning of Crowley family functions. Series 2: Professional, , n.d., Boxes 4-19 Contains materials pertaining to the professional career of Patricia A. Crowley. This is the majority of the collection. This covers administrative paperwork which includes meeting notes, presentations, agendas, minutes, task groups, charts, schedules, directories, reports, and correspondence for Chicago Continuum of Care as well as other homelessness initiatives and social causes Crowley was involved with.
