1 Brianna Collis UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Brianna Collis is a Masters of Landscape Architecture student at the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Science in Plant Science. Her background includes research and work in plant and soil ecology, conservation and ecological restoration in Ontario, as well as community outreach and urban gardening with youth through various non-profits in Winnipeg, Manitoba over the past decade. She has created designs in her academic program that occur at various spatial scales, from regional to community and site-scale. She has a keen interest in designing spaces that consider biophysical, biological and socio-cultural processes, their interactions, and how this plays out temporally in the landscape. Mark DeSouza UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ARCHITECTURE Mark is an aspiring architect with a degree in Architecture and Building Science from Ryerson University. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Architecture at the University of British Columbia School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), drawing a focus on environmentally friendly and responsive design. Having practiced in the Caribbean and North America has enabled Mark to have a broader lens when tackling challenges and solutions, both in a technical and creative sense. Specific to the DIALOG Residency, Mark has collaborated in designs for laneway projects to rethink and innovate the forgotten fabric of the city. Gordon Ngo UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA INDUSTRIAL DESIGN Gordon Ngo is currently an undergraduate student in the Industrial Design program at the University of Alberta Faculty of Fine Arts. Currently, he has a diploma in Architectural Technology from NAIT and is enroute to graduate from Industrial Design this Spring. He is working with the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital to redesign their cafeteria space to be more inclusive towards bariatric patients and as a place to decompress for their guests. Gordon was born in Edmonton, Alberta and has travelled extensively throughout Asia and Europe which has influenced his work throughout his projects at school.
2 Chelsea Legg-St. Pierre UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PUBLIC HEALTH Chelsea Legg-St.Pierre is a Master of Public Health student at the University of Alberta specializing in health promotion. Her MPH has taught her current theories and techniques in health promotion to work with communities to identify their health needs. She was fortunate to study in Denmark in 2013 where she first encountered the intersection of design and health through a guided walking tour of Copenhagen with Bianca Maria Hermansen and a workshop with Schmidt/Hammer/Lassen Architects in Arhus, Denmark. Chelsea is looking forward to bringing her public health perspective to the table for the 2018 DIALOG Design Residency. Ying Zheng UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY URBAN DESIGN Ying is currently pursuing her Master s Degree in Urban Design at the University of Calgary. Prior to arriving at Calgary, she earned a Bachelor s Degree in Environmental Science with a focus on stormwater management and climate change in China. Ying discovered her passion for urban design while completing a sustainable cities internship at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a non-profit organization. As an urban enthusiast, she maintains the belief that good designs in the public realm have the potential to positively impact health; moreover, they can help create just and climate-resilient cities. Jason McMillan UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO ARCHITECTURE Jason McMillan is a graduate student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. He received his BAS from the same institution and has worked in architecture, urban design and research offices in Calgary, Paris and Toronto, and studied in Rome. His past research has considered the reclamation of Newfoundland s industrial fishery infrastructure in outport communities as food security hubs, and the retrofit of buildings for flood resilience in central Manitoba First Nation communities with the Buoyant Foundation Project. Jason s current thesis research considers the converging speeds of geology, climate and built form in communities across the Canadian Arctic.
3 Zoe Lewis UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY ARCHITECTURE Zoe is currently in her third and final year of the Master s of Architecture program at the University of Calgary, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honors from Queen s University in Global Development Studies. She was born and raised in Calgary, but has worked and studied abroad in countries including Italy, China, Iceland and Japan. Her interests currently lie in the intersection between public and private, where scale and spatial quality of architecture varies thus blurring landscape, furniture, city and built form to create a field of activities within the urban environment. She is most intrigued by small interventions which play with scale, making their function ambiguous and open-ended. Diana Abdulhameed UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING Diana Abdulhameed is a PhD student in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Alberta. Diana has over 7 years of experience in designing concrete and steel structures. She has supervised and designed many projects including university buildings, hospitals, high-rise buildings, airports, bridges and mixedused developments across the Middle East. Lauren Marshall UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO ARCHITECTURE Lauren was born and raised on the shores of Lake Huron in rural South-Western Ontario. After completing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at Carleton University, she gained an understanding of educational institutions built environment through professional experience as a junior intern architect and as a space planner. She recently completed a Master of Architecture at the University of Toronto where she balanced an academic career with leadership roles in professional, research and extracurricular activities. As the Howarth-Wright Fellow of , Lauren s current research project investigates Frank Lloyd Wright s impact on gender in domestic spaces and the disintegration of work/life boundaries.
