3 Kenneth I. Chenault 2012 Hadrian Award The Duke of Devonshire kcvo, cbe, dl 2012 Watch Award Each year, World Monuments Fund celebrates distinguished individuals for their considerable accomplishments on behalf of heritage preservation. This year, the Board of Trustees of World Monuments Fund is proud to honor Kenneth I. Chenault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Express, with the 2012 Hadrian Award, and The Duke of Devonshire kcvo, cbe, dl with the 2012 Watch Award. Since 1988, World Monuments Fund has presented the Hadrian Award annually to an international leader whose patronage has advanced the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of the world s art and architecture. The award was inspired by the Roman emperor Hadrian whose reign was marked by military success and artistic patronage. Kenneth Chenault is a longtime, active supporter of historic preservation. His unwavering commitment to the world s significant landmarks is articulated through American Express. Under his leadership, American Express has earned the distinction as one of the world s leading corporate sponsors of historic preservation. This includes generous support that helps sustain the World Monuments Watch, the flagship advocacy program of World Monuments Fund. In 2011, World Monuments Fund inaugurated the Watch Award. The award was inspired by the World Monuments Watch, which acts as a call to action on behalf of sites in need of help. The Watch Award is bestowed annually during the Hadrian Award Gala to recognize individual advocacy, activism and extraordinary achievement on behalf of heritage preservation. The Duke of Devonshire exemplifies the spirit of the Watch Award. Through his work overseeing the restoration of the magnificent Chatsworth House estate, he and The Duchess of Devonshire have ensured the longterm preservation of this vital part of British heritage for the benefit and enjoyment of the public and future generations. It is with great pleasure that World Monuments Fund celebrates Kenneth Chenault and The Duke of Devonshire and their commitment and sense of duty to preserving the world s shared heritage.
