2 Boys Cross Country Running Mora claims third consecutive championship in Class A; Wayzata earns Class AA title; Mounds Park Academy s Dahlberg, Edina s Roos win individual titles Glorious sunshine and warm temperatures greeted runners during the 2016 State Cross Country Meet and fans were treated to two exhilarating races. The Class A run came down to the narrowest of margins, and the Class AA race featured a rally that resulted in a championship. Junior Declan Dahlberg of Mounds Park Academy of St. Paul led the Class A individual pack with a winning time of 15:56.9. Edina senior Patrick Roos won the individual title in Class AA with a time of 15:36.4. Mora won the Class A title for a third consecutive season. The Mustangs compiled 93 points. Perham was runner-up with 99 points and La Crescent was third at 123. Wayzata won the Class AA championship with 38 points, 53 fewer than Edina which was runner-up with 91. Maple Grove was third with 128. Class A In one of the closest finishes in recent memory, Mounds Park Academy junior Declan Dahlberg reached deep into his speed reserve and found enough to hold of La Crescent junior Matt Steiger and Lake City senior Carl Kozlowski in a hold-your-breath photo finish. Dahlberg won in a time of 15 minutes, 56.9 seconds, two-tenths of a seconds ahead of Steiger, who was runner-up in 15:57.1. Kozlowski was third in 15:57.3. My legs were killing me, said Dahlberg, who was the top-ranked runner in Class A this season. I kind of fell at the end. I didn t have anything left... It was unbelievable. I can t even hear myself talking right now. Dahlberg placed 19th in 2015 with a time of 16:45.4. There s so much talent in this field, he said. You see the rankings every week, but it doesn t mean everything. Everybody in this Top 25 can win this race. And I was fortunate enough to have enough left. Mora won the Class A team championship for the third consecutive season with 93 points. Perham was runner-up with 99 points and La Crescent third at 123. Windom Area placed fourth with 166 and West Central Area of Barrett was next with 186. Spurring Mora to its trifecta of team titles was senior Michael Schwinghamer, who was seventh overall, but fifth in the team tabulation. Also scoring for Mora were senior Alec Sanbeck, senior John Schwinghamer, junior Zach Garza, and senior Matt Ergen. Mora is the first Class A team to win three consecutive championships since Staples Motley did it from 2001 through Class AA Edina senior Patrick Roos was the highest returning qualifier entering the 2016 Class AA race, placing fifth in Improving on that finish was in doubt with about 400 meters left in this year s race. At that juncture, Roos was about 15 meters behind the lead group. But suddenly, he accelerated and began reeling in the lead pack with a kick that paved the way to a 5- second victory. He finished with a winning time of 15:36.4. Wayzata junior Khalid Hussein was runner-up in 15:41.8 and St. Paul Como Park senior Innocent Murwanash made school history with a program-best third-place finish in 15:47.8. Roos reflected on his comeback following the race. I was hurting a little bit, but I saw the guys (in front) also hurting, too, he said. And so I just kind of believed in myself that I could do it. Coach told me to be confident in myself before the race, so I had that going. So I caught up to (those) guys and I just took it on the stretch home. I didn t look back. I just went straight for it. Wayzata captured the Class AA team championship for the first time since winning the second of consecutive titles in Since 2007, the Trojans have won six championships. Edina was second in the team chase with 91 points and Maple Grove was third at 128. Mounds View was fourth at 156 points followed by Bemidji with 164. Scoring for the Trojans were Hussein, senior Liban Jama, sophomore Grant Price, junior Grant Matthews and senior Jeremy Gilbertson. The 2016 State Cross Country Meet was held November 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Edina s Patrick Roos (center) accelerated past the Class AA leaders with about 400 meters to go in the race.
