I had the pleasure of presenting to Malcolm Sawle a Paul Harris sapphire recognition on Thursday night, another example of the quiet dedication and commitment which so many in our club make. Greg sourced another interesting and illuminating speaker, Greg Wills and we welcomed Pamela Page from the Concourse Chemist and Mary Cunnington a golfing friend of Megan's. The previous day Tony had organised for keen golfers to have the round of golf at VGC, postponed from the very hot day, thanks Tony. Peter and Heather gave us more information about the continuation of the Farmers Market (February 13th for the next one), and that the Bayside Councillors are going to use the market as a listening post for the next few months. Chris is looking for volunteers for the Day on Oak Street on the 14th of February, and Richard has been signing us up for the next fellowship event, the Film " Spotlight" on the 18th of February, see Richard if you'd like to attend, $20 per head including a glass of wine. The reviews say it is riveting, it is a story of the journalists who investigated the Boston diocese's cover up of abuse. Shirley, Megan, Louise and I, with advice from Ken have chosen the theme for our "dress up" for the Conference, "Dancing with the Stars". This will give maximum potential for us to frock up, particularly in 80s glam. Next week we have Clem Quick giving his new member talk and the week after Lois Lindsay, we will be in for a treat. 2 Lottery Results The People s Choice Lottery has been drawn for another year. Unfortunately I could not see any winning tickets from our Club. However it was fascinating to see the diverse range of community groups this lottery supports. 3 Speaker: Greg Wills Topic: Charlie Hebdo Greg Wills is a Council Member of the Australian Institute of International Affairs Victorian Branch. The Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) is an independent, non-profit organisation seeking to promote interest in and understanding of international affairs in Australia. It provides a forum for discussion and debate, but does not seek to formulate its own institutional views. The Institute arranges programs of lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other discussions, and sponsors research and publications. The AIIA was formed in 1924 and established as a federal body in 1933 and is the only nation -wide organisation of its kind in Australia. It is financed by members contributions, a small government subvention and tax deductible donations from individuals and businesses. The AIIA consists of a number of independent branches, which are located in seven Australian States and Territories, and a National Office in Canberra. In addition, close contact is maintained with the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, and with sister institutes and similarly minded organisations around the world. While only one of the attendees, the cartoonist, Riss, was shot in the attack the others have varying degrees of emotional scarring from the event. Many members have left the organisation but have been replaced. The meeting took place within a heavily fortified bunker within the offices of the newspaper Liberation, the new home of CH. The office is heavily fortified by French Government security. The CH journalists had good knowledge of political events in Australia while Greg was able to brief them on aspects of Asian issues where the AIIA are particularly knowledgeable e.g. North Korea) While the circulation of CH had been trending down the events of 7 January 2015 have reversed that. The strong satirical flavour of CH is undaunted. The AIIA provides a wide range of opportunities for the dissemination of information and free expression of views on these matters through discussion and publication. Precluded by its constitution from expressing any opinion of its own on international affairs, the AIIA provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of a wide range of views. AIIA was voted the top think tank in South East Asia and the Pacific in the Global Go To Think Tanks Index in For more information go to ; Translation: In memory of the victims of the terrorist attack against the freedom of speech perpetrated inside of the offices of Charlie Hebdo 7 January Late last year Greg met with five current members of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo (CH). He regarded it as one of the great highlights of his life. In his talk he talked broadly about the meeting, the people he met and provided many illustrations of the hard hitting, often risqué, carton style for which the paper is known. Highlights of the meeting included; The meeting was only agreed to because of the high regard in which AIIA is held. Efforts by Australian politicians to have similar meetings were rejected. Greg and his party were under tight security from the time they landed at Charles de Gaulle airport. Page 3

At their first stop, Bryce Canyon National Park, they hiked the Navajo Loop Trail. This view opened up as this trail turned into a twisting and winding [path] to the bottom of the valley below, he says.
