Current status of cemetery: Active.

2 Point of contact for cemetery. Donald Crockett or Dan Graham This cemetery is located on 3.7 acres. It was originally listed for the White County Historical Society March 26, 1966, by Cloie and Leister Presley of Searcy, who researched numerous White County cemeteries in the 1960s and 70s. Their report was published in the 1972 edition of White County Heritage. A census of the cemetery was done by Gerald Torrence of Judsonia for the Historical Society in June He listed what he saw on headstones and any new information was added to the Presley list. The lists were updated again by Historical Society member Leroy Blair who visited the cemetery November 15, Additions are made by the Society based on printed obituaries. According to the Presleys, "The cemetery is not visible from the road but is in well-kept condition. It is necessary to go through a pasture gate to reach the cemetery and church house." Torrence provided the following directions: "Take Highway 36 to Rose Bud, turn left on Highway 5 and go to Bethesda Road. Take Bethesda Road to a T in the road. Turn left and go about 200 feet then turn right." He found a member of the Crisco family living on property adjoining the cemetery. "Mr. Crisco told me David S. Goodloe, a Methodist missionary, founded the cemetery," Gerald said. However, the earliest listed Goodloe burial was in 1887 and there are numerous Maddox family members buried here in the late 1850s and 60s. William E. Leach, a former president of the White County Historical Society, notes there is a Goodloe Church in Cleburne County that is still active today. He also cited a paper entitled "Early Camp Meetings of Faulkner County," written in 1950 by Margaret Ann Ross, which details an annual camp meeting of the Methodist Church in an area that is now called Old Springfield Road, and is equidistant from Rose Bud, Quitman, Enders, Enola and Mt. Vernon. Called "Camp Merrick," it was started about 1858 and continued until the 1890s, according to Ross article. "Rose Bud gained a post office in 1858," Leach notes, "and as I understand it the main area of settlement was about three miles east of present day Rose Bud (north of Crockett s Store about a mile) where the old Hopewell Baptist Cemetery is located. This area is also referred to as Plant s Chapel, a Methodist Church that met on alternate Sundays with Hopewell Primitive Baptist, now located about five miles north of Rose Bud, and which I believe dates back to the 1840s. These two communities (Plant s Chapel and Bethesda) would be the schools and churches that the Methodist minister Henry A. Stroup refers to in the 1920 article about the initial consolidation of Rose Bud School [see 2001 edition White County Heritage]. In looking at the Bethesda Church building, which I have only seen from the outside, I think the present walls and floor are the old church building, probably built in the 1870s. Windows have been replaced and the roof has been replaced at some time. It was common at this time for a lodge hall to be on the second story of a church or school building. The last such building in the county was the Baptist Church at El Paso, which didn t replace its two-story building until the 1970s. I suspect that the original Bethesda Church would date back to the late 1850s as does the cemetery. The land may not have been formalized legally until Mr. Goodloe came along and established a formal easement in. The old-timers didn t bother with paperwork, as they all understood among themselves who or what an agreement was all about."
