2 ABOUT JUNIOR COUNCIL Join a dynamic group of young New Yorkers and experience a legacy of science and discovery. Junior Council supports the Museum in its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate through scientific research and education knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe. 3 CALENDAR OF EVENTS Calendar of Events Calendar of Events Junior Council invites you to our annual events; a stimulating mix of science, education, and revelry, these occasions offer an intimate view of the Museum s collections, exhibitions, and fields of study. Each speciallyarranged event presents Junior Council members with the opportunity to enjoy the Museum after-hours, as well as to meet and mingle with Museum scientists, educators, and friends. invitations to follow. Available to ALL Junior Council Members Jean-Michel Cousteau s Secret Ocean JUNIOR COUNCIL EXCLUSIVE OCTOBER 15, 2015 Explore the wonders underwater with the Junior Council as we open this season with a viewing of the Museum s latest giant-screen film Secret Ocean. This event includes remarks by a Museum scientist, a 3D film screening, and a cocktail reception. Free for Junior Council members. Guests pay $100 in advance or $125 at the door. OCTOBER 28, 2015 Please join us for lunch and a presentation on the Museum s upcoming temporary exhibition on the human microbiome, led by the exhibit s co-curators, Drs. Susan Perkins and Rob DeSalle of the Museum s Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Fall Exhibition Preview Reception JUNIOR COUNCIL EXCLUSIVE FEBRUARY 10, 2016 Join us for a champagne cocktail reception in the Cullman Hall of the Universe, followed by a special program, Romance Stories from the Night Sky, in the Hayden Planetarium. Free for Junior Council members. Guests pay $100 in advance or $125 at the door. NOVEMBER 5, 2015 The Museum s fall temporary exhibition will explore the rapidly evolving science that is revealing complexities of the human microbiome and redefining our notions of human health. Spring Exhibition Preview Reception MARCH 14, 2016 How did everyone s favorite animals from the distant past dinosaurs evolve into the fascinating living creatures we call birds? The Museum s spring exhibition will offer intriguing, sometimes startling, answers to that question. This event includes an exhibition viewing and a VIP cocktail reception. Jazz on the Terrace JUNIOR COUNCIL EXCLUSIVE JUNE 23, 2016 Join us for the season s culminating event and raise a glass to summer on the Museum s beautiful Arthur Ross Terrace. 4 YOUR IMPACT My wife and I have been members of the Junior Council for nearly ten years and co-chairs for almost five years. The speakers and insights at the various events are always engaging and inspiring, and we plan to support the institution for many years to come. For more than 140 years, the American Museum of Natural History has been enriching the lives of visitors of all ages and backgrounds through an integrated program of cutting-edge scientific research, innovative educational programs, and fascinating exhibitions. 5 ANNUAL APPEAL Annual Appeal: Name a Fossil! The Dimetrodon limbatus predates dinosaurs by about 40 million years and lived during the Permian age, an astounding 280 million years ago. The full Dimetrodon skeleton was recovered from Godlin Creek, Texas in 1906 by paleontologist Ermine Cowles Case. The fossils and dinosaurs on the fourth floor of the Museum provide an invaluable record of the evolution of life on this planet, beginning hundreds of millions of years ago with jawless fishes and finishing with extinct mammals. For the first time, the Museum has invited donors to name the fossil mounts and dioramas and become a part of the Museum s storied history of fossil collection and presentation. Dimetrodon limbatus in the Hall of Primitive Mammals By raising $50,000 to name the Dimetrodon limbatus, the Junior Council will enjoy permanent recognition in the Hall of Primitive Mammals. The money raised through this appeal will have a direct impact on the Museum s mission to advance scientific discovery and knowledge and share the wonders of the natural world with millions of visitors.
