Nazelrod Every gift makes a difference in helping us to provide a community in which young women are empowered each day by their Catholic High education. Dear Friends of Catholic High, Although our 75th Anniversary Celebration has come to an end, Lighting the Way ~ Transforming the World, will hold a special place in my heart and memory, as it is now part of the glorious history of Catholic High. It was an exciting eighteen months full of many activities highlighting this historic milestone at Catholic High, from the Opening Event in March, 2015 to our sold out Gala to the April 20th Finale, and all of our special events and monthly student celebrations in between. This year 80 seniors from the Class of 2015 were awarded a record breaking $6,196,345 in scholarships, grants, and awards, and accepted into colleges and universities such as Duke University, United States Naval Academy, University of Notre Dame, University of Chicago, and University of Maryland Honors College. Our McCafferty Visual & Performing Arts, Medical Exploration, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Programs continue to attract creative and visionary minds. These programs are helping our students gain acceptance into top Universities with significant scholarships and awards. In addition to being proud of our academic achievements, I am pleased to present this Annual Report acknowledging our many benefactors. Once again, our Board of Trustees and faculty/staff achieved 100% participation representing their commitment to our mission and students. Our Reunion Class Giving Program and Alumnae Awards Recipients are also highlighted in this report. I hope you will take the time to review the information included. Please know that every gift makes a difference in helping us to provide a community in which young women are empowered each day by their Catholic High education. On behalf of our students, I extend my deepest appreciation for your continued support and confidence. Catholic High remains strong due to the commitment, vision, and passion of its many volunteers and donors. Sincerely, Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. 68 President 2 The Catholic High School of Baltimore

Catholic High inspired me to use my gifts and make a difference in the world. Recipients of this award are recognized for their individual achievements, contributions to their profession, service to the community, and loyalty to Catholic High, all of which Dr. Boulware has displayed. Dr. Boulware received training from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences. As a naturopathic physician, she combines natural science therapies and medical science to help patients live healthier lives. Dr. Boulware served as the first naturopathic physician commissioned by Towson University to teach a Complementary and Alternative Medicine course. As a Catholic High student, Dr. Boulware was involved in a variety of sports and activities. However, she attributes her experience on the Forensics team under the tutelage of Mr. Howard Scott, as the foundation for her public speaking skills. Mr. Scott remembers her fondly, I will never forget the Rosa Parks piece, Buses from her final year at Catholic High. Her poise, talent, intelligence, and natural charm served her very well to make her the dynamic woman she has become today.

St. Francis wrote this prayer as a dedication to Mary whom he honored as the Mother of Jesus. Just as St. Francis believed in Mary, so does recent graduate, Laura Arvin. Being named Miss Catholic High, she had the esteemed honor of crowning the Blessed Virgin at the May Crowning. Also similiar to St. Francis, Laura enjoys learning about the life of animals. One summer, she volunteered at the National Aquarium in Baltimore and enjoyed watching the visitors eyes light up when she told them new and exciting facts. Laura, who is wise beyond her years said, I believe letting your light shine entails recognizing the talents with which God has blessed you and utilizing them to support and improve your community. Laura is a true model of a Catholic High graduate. She is in her first year at UMBC as an Honors College biology major. She hopes to attend medical school to become a pediatric oncologist. With full confidence, she explained, Because of Catholic High, I have been given the tools to achieve all that I have planned because no one will be able to permanently prevent me from doing so. Eleanor DeCarlo Romadka 51 has gracefully shared many gifts with Catholic High. Through the years Mrs. Romadka has supported the renovations of the library and gymnasium, helped with the organizing and planning of the annual golf outing and gala, and is currently serving as a member of the 75th Anniversary Campaign Cabinet. Ellie is always willing to help, said Kim Lynch, Coordinator of Development & Fundraising. It doesn t matter where she is, she will do what she can and is an incredibly hard worker. I am fortunate to work with her as often as I do. Mrs. Romadka s tireless effort and desire to gift back are rooted in the teachings of the Franciscan sisters of Catholic High. Mrs. Romadka was awarded the Lux Tua Luceat Service Award given to an alumna who demonstrates the vision and mission of Catholic High through her education, initiative, and humanity, and continues to let her light shine. Dr. Nazelrod commented, Her good works in the name of Catholic High for so many years have touched the lives of everyone in the school community.

Not only is Ashlynn considered respectful, but she is also described as a hard-working and dedicated student and athlete. Named Junior-of-the-Year, Ashlynn continues to demonstrate her motivation to succeed and improve. Helping others is as important to Ashlynn as success in the classroom. She fondly remembers volunteering with Gallagher Services, a program for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Ashlynn believes that by helping others succeed and reach their goals, they, too, may go out and help someone else. Ashlynn credits Catholic High with empowering her to be a responsible leader, to strive for academic excellence, and to help others through Christian community service, in addition to having the courage to show her creativity and individualism. She has the foundation for success grounded by her Catholic High experience.

Ms. Lindsey graduated from Seton Hill University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Corporate Communication and is a support advisor at Kipp Baltimore, a public charter program encouraging hard work and high expectations from its students. In addition to spending over a year serving with AmeriCorps, she is also a mentor for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Organization, and encourages and inspires young people. Ms. Lindsey attributes her spirit of giving back to her community to the lessons learned at Catholic High. She commented, Catholic High taught me so much about leadership and volunteering.

Simply put, be the candle and inspire others with a positive attitude; do not be a passive reflection of someone else. Sophomore-of-the-Year, Shannon Lord, is the very candle about which Wharton speaks. Life opens up when you are positive and look on the bright side, Shannon said when asked why it is important to be positive. She went on to explain that choosing to be this way influences others around you to do the same. Shannon s positive outlook on life shines through all she does at Catholic High. As an ambassador she enjoys meeting new people and making them feel welcome. As a member of the Water and Green School Committees and volunteer at several STEM events, Shannon is empowered to be a responsible member of the community, something she enjoys about her school. Outside of school Shannon enjoys writing, martial arts, music, and going on hikes. She hopes to one day have a career in music or psychology. Whatever path she decides in life, Shannon will be the candle that emits a positive light as she does throughout the Catholic High community. Annual Report

Sr. Rose Monica Katusz 65 spent her life letting her light shine and glorifying the Father in heaven. In Fall, 2014 Catholic High honored Sr. Rose Monica with the Franciscan Heritage Award, recognizing her work joyfully serving the poor, promoting social justice, empowering others to reverence creation, and giving witness to the Franciscan spirit in the world. After graduating from Catholic High in 1965, Sr. Rose Monica entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and began a life of service to others. She traveled to Kenya to minister at the St. Clare Girls Secondary School, where many of her students were orphaned as a result of the 2009 AIDS epidemic. Sr. Rose Monica s ministry took her to additional parts of the world. Sr. Joyce Helfrich, also a Sister of St. Francis, recalls Sr. Rose Monica as a Catholic High student, She was always energetic and enthusiastic about Catholic High. Sr. Rose Monica s life s work represents the true spirit of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi and challenges us to humbly serve others and glorify the Father in heaven. Sr. Rose Monica died after a long illness on May 30, The Catholic High School of Baltimore

She began dancing at age two and has not stopped yet. Growing up dancing has helped me be courageous, whether it s in front of my classmates or an auditorium filled with people, Courtney explained. With this courage and determination she earned a spot on the varsity dance team. She is valued and well-respected by her teammates because of her positive attitude and willingness to help others. Courtney s dedication to everything she does is inspiring, stated Ms. Brianna Sosnowski, coach of Catholic High s dance team. Her positive attitude and ability to smile no matter what is thrown her way, shows her spirit and love for dance. Dance is not the only way Courtney contributes to our school community. She shows her leadership skills when she helps at STEM camps and as an ambassador. Community service is also an important part of Courtney s life. As parishioner at St. Jane Frances de Chantal in Riveria Beach, she shares her faith as an altar server and participates in youth group activities. In the future, Courtney wants to explore a career in dance or forensics. Whether she s dancing on Broadway or working a crime scene, there s no question that she will do so with a positive attitude and a smile.

19 The Tau Society The Tau Society honors a committed and special group of benefactors who choose to include The Catholic High School of Baltimore in their estate plans or in any planned gift arrangement. Upon making an estate gift, these individuals become members of The Tau Society. To thank members, we invite them to participate in the annual President s Reception and recognize them in the Annual Report of Gifts. Credit card gifts are becoming more popular because of our online capabilities and the rewards offered by particular credit card companies. Many donors prefer to make a pledge as it gives them the opportunity to complete their gift over a period of time. A gift of stock may be transferred to Catholic High, avoiding capital gains tax. There are several options available when dealing with gifts of property. An outright gift of a house, land, or vacation property avoids capital gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to give property and retain the use of it for his or her lifetime. More than 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs. Many times, a gift can have a double effect because of an employer s matching gift. When making this type of gift, a donor must mail the matching gift form provided by his or her human resources department with the gift. gifts planned for the future A Bequest is a gift made by a provision in one s will naming Catholic High as beneficiary. It can reduce estate tax. A Charitable Gift Annuity allows the donor to receive benefits for his or her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. A Charitable Remainder Trust transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays income back to the donor for life, or for a specific period of time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. If Catholic High is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy becomes eligible for a tax deductible gift.
