The fieldwork I conducted to support the design research has covered a wide range of regional architecture (e.g. Oman, Yemen, UAE, Morocco and more recently Rajasthan). The initial interest was triggered by research in Islamic geometry and consolidated in practicing with Hassan Fathy in Cairo broadening the spectrum with the design of the Islamic and Arab city, the architecture, crafts, culture, function and prevalent meaning. Earth architecture and building technology led my design research to vernacular architecture in the urban and rural fabric as a practical source of inspiration, providing impetus for addressing the social, environmental and architectural balance. Current research investigates the Madinah hypothesis as a resource and creative reference: a focal point in the dialogue on the future of Arab cities. Chief Architect and founding member of The Daw an Mud Brick Architecture Foundation established in 2008 and based in Mukalla, Yemen. The Daw an Foundation is dedicated to developing and working with vernacular, earth and sustainable architecture. A good number of projects were implemented, in partnership with the Prince Claus Fund, Cultural Emergency Response (The Netherlands) Project Architect & Consultant Completed Qarn Majid, Daw an the restoration and rehabilitation of Husn Qarn Majid, Daw an Shibam, Wadi Hadramut, the reconstruction of a tower house and restoration of basahi house, and renovation of 10 other roof terraces The Restoration of Al Faqih Mosque in Aynat, Wadi Hadramut, Yemen The Restoration of Bawazir Ghayl Umar Mosque, Sah- Hadramut, Yemen The Reconstruction of 4 Wali Tombs in Sayqat al Sadah, Sah- Hadramut, Yemen The Restoration of 3 Wali Tombs in Sah Cemetery, Hadramut, Yemen Ongoing: Project Architect & Consultant Ribat Ba Ashan (housing cluster of 12 private houses) is also underway with feasibility studies and design proposals presented to the Client, updated The Architectural Rehabilitation of Masna at Daw an; Site of 13 buildings in Wadi Daw an, Hadramut-undergoing renovation for a Heritage Hotel for a Private Client/Investor. Pending since Project Architect: Partner with Cultural Emergency Response, Prince Claus Fund, The Netherlands. Contract for emergency works and rescue of partially collapsed or damaged structures in Daw an and Wadi Hadramut after the floods of 2006 & Includes the reinforcement, restoration and renovation of residential, mosques and cemetery sites in Masna ah, Sah & Aynat projects (as above). Current projects include the Emergency Works on the City of Shibam, Wadi Hadramut. March-July 2007 On Site Review, Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Geneva for The City of Shibam (Wadi Hadramut) & Amiriyyah Madrasah in Rada (Yemen) subsequently both received Awards, KL- Malaysia September Nov April 2004 Architectural Advisor to Shaykh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of The Works Department, Abu Dhabi Emirate. Acted as representative to Client in selecting and inviting international architects and designers for major architectural projects. Architects included Renzo Piano BW, Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Mueron, Paul Andreau, Claudio Silverstrin, Dale Chihuly, James Turell; Supervising and Managing Projects on sites, coordinating and liaising between government institutions and international consultants, design and project management teams on behalf of the Client. Set up projects, concepts, contracts, and expedite decisions and procedures with The Executive Council, Town Planning Committees and Gov. Finance Department. 2
