3 photo: Snøhetta photo: Statsbygg Opera House Kirsten Flagstads plass 1 N-0150 Oslo The New Opera House has 3 main parts First the 'Front of House': the public areas located in the building s western section These include the main foyer, and 2 auditoriums The foyer is a grand, open room with a variety of lighting conditions and views to the surroundings This space is characterised by simple use of materials and minimal details Secondly the Back of House : these are the production areas of the building with workshops, storage areas, rehearsal rooms etc The architecture is functionally appropriate, the exterior façade is composed of metal panels Last part is the Roofscape: describes the building s monumental character The horizontal and sloping plane of the roof provides the opera with an unusually dramatic expression, quite different from the surrounding buildings Clad in white stone, and it s details will provide a holistic and symbolic character to the building while also allowing for a variety of experiences as one moves past it photo: Snøhetta Floor area/size m² Client Snøhetta Statsbygg Snohetta 3

4 photo: Nils Petter Dale photo: Nils Petter Dale Oslo School of ure Maridalsveien Oslo The new Oslo School of ure is based in an existing building from 1938 It's part of a larger effort to revitalise this former industrial area for education-related use The long-term aim is a campus for arts education along the riverbank The project won an open architectural competition in 1998 The exterior of the existing building has a conservation status The architects have kept the block open towards the river, and combined the new programme with the logic of the existing building together with the surroundings in one spatial sequence An access court has been cut out of the existing 1st floor slab, marking the entrance and bringing daylight in to the ground floor foyer A strip has been cut out of the existing slab along the inside of the existing building, bringing daylight to the surrounding functions A simple U-shaped circulation zone is established along the strip A new string of teaching rooms completes the U and forms a bridge across the entrance area photo: Nils Petter Dale 2001 Structural engineer Landscape designer Jarmund Vigsnæs s AS Frederiksen Grindaker as Jarmund_Vigsnaes_s located by the Akerselva River in the eastern part of Oslo 4

5 photo: Per Maning Nydalen Metro Station Nydalsveien Oslo Nydalen Metro Station consists of a detached entrance pavilion on street level, while the 110-metre long platform area lies 12 metres underground The pavilion's architecture is expressed through a composition of horizontal and vertical levels and planes, which are dynamically cast off in relation to each other The closely-built wall planes are made of black basalt, contrasting and complementing a cast-off glass box in red, symbolizing the red metro wagons This stands as a signal for the station and allows a glimpse of the escalators ascending from the tunnel Installed around the escalators are 1800 neon lights and 44 loudspeakers This 'Tunnel of Light' is a work of art where light, music, technology and architecture become an integral and unified whole photo: Per Maning Floor area/size m² Client Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter Oslo Public Transport Systems KristinJarmundArkitekter 5

6 photo: Richard van Riel photo: Richard van Riel Vigeland Sculpture Park Kirkeveien / Frogner Park Oslo Vigeland Sculpture Park is a part of Frogner Park, located in Oslo,, 3 km northwest of the city centre The park covers 80 acres ( m2) and features 212 bronze and granite sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland Vigeland personally sculpted every figure out of clay and individual craftsmen were contracted to fabricate the pieces into what they are today These works of art reside along an 850 metre-long axis divided into six sections: The Main Gate, The Bridge, The Children's Playground, The Fountain, The Monolith Plateau and the Wheel of Life Vigeland was also in charge of the design and architectural layout of the park (text from Wikipedia) photo: Richard van Riel 1949 Artist, Landscape architect Gustav Vigeland richardvanriel 6

7 photo: JDS s photo: Marco Boella Holmenkollen Ski Jump Kongeveien Oslo The Holmenkollen Ski Jump was the main arena for the 1952 winter Olympic Games, and plays an important part in the Norwegian skiing tradition A new slope emphasizes the existing landmark's values The shape of the silhouette is emphasized with a sharp and simply cut The given wind protection profile is utilized and offset in a parallel manner downward, creating a smooth bended rectangle hosting the slope, the main elevators and the top in-run program The top is then sliced horizontally to accommodate a viewing platform The Knoll building is moved further up the hill to serve as an anchor point for the structure, letting it cantilever and avoid visually disruptive structural supports From a distance the structure will appear as a milky-white sharp profile extending further into the sky with a diffused beam of light; a beacon for Oslo photo: Marco Boella 2011 Client JDS architects Oslo Municipality JDS Tel: , Fax: , skif@skiforeningenno The Ski Museum in Holmenkollen is the world's oldest museum specialising in skis and the history of skiing The museum is situated inside the actual Holmenkollen ski jump, where visitors can experience a magnificent view of Oslo 7

10 Aker Brygge 0250 Aker brygge 0250 Oslo With Bølgen we were looking for a multifunctional building that will be a meeting place within the urban fabric The vast range of programmatic needs asked for a high degree of flexibility We accommodated the spatial program into a simple shape with a clear identity and let it become a natural element of the local neighborhoodthe flexibility of the space allows for an all- year program mixture First of all, it is a restaurant and cafe for Oslo but it also has the capability to host concerts and conferences etc and the open floor plan can be subdivided according to temporary needs 2009 Main designer, Lendager Arkitekter + Arcgency Alliance Arkitekter 10

11 National Museum Bankplassen Oslo The main building, designed by Christian Heinrich Grosch, was completed in 1830 as a division office for Norges Bank It was adapted and extended by Sverre Fehn before opening as a museum in 2008 The building is a juxtaposition of classicism and modernist architecture - an encounter between Grosch and Fehn, 's most important architects of the 19th and 20th centuries respectively 2008 Sverre Fehn 11

12 Astrup fearnley museum Strandpromenaden Oslo Astrup Fearnley Museum was built as part of Tjuvholmen Icon Complex ( ) and was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with Narud-Stokke-Wiig (Oslo) The project is set in a wonderful position at the outermost point where the city stretches into the Fjord; it is a big shelter for art over three buildings integrated in the landscape, the natural destination of the promenade from the City Hall along the harbor quay The Museum starts outside: the park is an organic game of canals, bridges and lawns where sculptures of the Selvaag collection are displayed in the nature and in the Piazza Once inside the visitors experience the temporary exhibition of the Astrup Fearnley Museet in a big double-height space, where natural light is filtered from a glass roof Renzo Piano 12

13 photo: FotosFraOslo photo: Linda Garrison Oslo City Hall Fridtjof Nansens plass Oslo Oslo City Hall houses the city council, city administration, and art studios and galleries The construction started in 1931, but was paused by the outbreak of World War II, before the official inauguration in 1950 Its characteristic architecture, artworks and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, held on 10 December, makes it one of Oslo's most famous buildings It was designed by Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson The roof of the eastern tower has a 49-bell carillon which plays every hour It is situated in Pipervika in central downtown Oslo The area was completely renovated and rebuilt to make room for the new city hall, back in the late 1920s In June 2005 it was named Oslo's "Structure of the Century", with 304% of the votes 1950 Main designer, Arnstein Arneberg Magnus Poulsson 13

16 photo: Ivan Brodey Signal Mediahus Nedre gate Oslo In 2012, Space Group completed the refurbishment of a late nineteenth century industrial building designed by architects Ove Ekman and Einar Smith This area along the Akers River was historically referred to as NY York (New York) due to its explosive development in 1858 Today the area reflects a transformation towards a district focused on art, architecture and design Signal Mediahus sits next to the Aker River in Oslo The original industrial building has a rich history of uses, from textile industry to offices and events Part of the building burned down in the 1980s The project inserts a completely new architecture inside the shell of the old while preserving the historic The two correlates while both being clearly architecturally defined Floor area/size m² Space Group photo: Ivan Brodey 16

17 photo: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter photo: Søren Harder Nilsen Fagerborg Kindergarten Fagerborggata Oslo Reiulf Ramstad s has been involved in designing a new kindergarten for Fagerborg Congregation in central Oslo The kindergarten offers 2 units for children between 1-3 years old and 2 units for children between 3-6 years old There are many cultural heritage guidelines to be considered in the project site The area is characterised by residential buildings from As a requirement from the local authority, the kindergarten is to have a contemporary expression With its location in the middle of a small city park, the kindergarten has an outdoor area that is protected like an enclosed garden The planning solution enables the 4 kindergarten units to function both independently and together as required All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building Administration is placed on the upper floor separate from children areas photo: Søren Harder Nilsen 2010 Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter 17

18 Kunstnernes Hus Wergelandsveien Oslo Kunstnernes Hus is an art gallery in Oslo, It is 's largest gallery under the direction of artists, and has served as a major center for exhibits of Norwegian and international contemporary art It is also a prominent example of Functionalist architecture and houses the Office for Contemporary Art The building is situated in Wergelandsveien 17, across the Royal palace park After having raised funds and interest for several years, Bildende Kunstneres Styre (now Norwegian Visual Artists Association) acquired the site for its headquarters in 1927 and opened an architectural contest in 1928 Several important specifications were imposed on entries, among them natural light from the ceiling, limited building height, and a facade that blended with the surrounding architecture Its architecture is noted as an important milestone in the transition from the legacy of 19th century Neoclassical architecture to 20th century Functionalism 1930 Main designer, Gudolf Blakstad Herman Munthe-Kaas 18

19 DnB NOR Bygg C Dronning Eufemias gate Oslo The C building by Dark Arkitekter has fifteen floors and a surface of m2 It's planned completed in 2012 Thirteen generic office floors give 500 workplaces for the bank The two top floors contain a public restaurant and bar with a 360 degree viewing platform on the roof terrace An inclined public panorama elevator connects the view platform and the restaurant/bar on the top with the ground level restaurant at Dronning Eufemias gate, the new main boulevard of Oslo At street level the building have a mix of retail and commercial establishments, in addition to one of several dining lounges in the DnB NOR complex A two story high public passage penetrates the building, as a part of a public short track through the Barcode site, leading to the Oslo central station The stair shaped volume, each step two stories high, faces south towards the fjord The fifthteen floor high north façade faces the railroad tracksand the city 2013 DARK Arkitekter 19

20 Norwegian Centre for Design and ure Hausmanns gate Oslo The centre provides an arena for large and small architecture and design exhibitions, conferences and meetings, as well as a shop, a café & restaurant DogA was established by Norsk Form and the Norwegian Design Council in 2004, and is a meeting place for design, architecture and related subject areas The house is seen as an oppurtunity to communicate the benefits of design and form to Norwegian businesses Hausmanns gate 16 is included on the Cultural Heritage Management Office's 'yellow' list of buildings worth preserving The property consists of several combined buildings and was originally designed as a transformer station The buildings were constructed in 1898, 1917 and 1948 Hausmanns gate 16 was awarded the National Building Prize in Logg arkitektur 20

21 Oslo Concert Hall Munkedamsveien Oslo Oslo Concert Hall (Oslo Konserthus) is a concert hall located in Vika, a part of Oslo city centre in It is the base of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (Oslo-Filharmonien), but it also aims to be one of the premier music venues for the general musical and cultural life of, offering a broad variety of musical styles from classical, world music, and popular entertainment by both Norwegian and international artists and groups It presents more than 300 events yearly and receives more than 200,000 visitors Gösta Åberghs 21

22 Det Norske Teatret Kristian IVs gate Oslo Det Norske Teatret is a theatre in Oslo The theatre was founded in 1912, after an initiative from Hulda Garborg and Edvard Drabløs It opened in 1913, touring with two plays, Ervingen by Ivar Aasen and Rationelt Fjøsstell by Hulda Garborg The theatre primarily performs plays written in or translated into Nynorsk B arkitekter 22

24 photo: Nils Petter Dale photo: Jarmund/Vigsnaes Sorenga Byggetrinn 3 Sørenga Oslo The project is part of an 8 block / 900 unit development named Sørenga in the harbor area of Oslo The Sørenga project is located at its own peninsula, and is part of the large Bjørvika development, that also includes the New Norwegian Opera building The site was used for harbor activities which is now relocated A master plan by LPO s calls for 900 units divided into 8 blocks Four different groups of architects have been chosen to design the individual blocks Block 3 is located at the east side of the peninsula The specific set?back rules for the development has been utilized to make a terraced and highly sculptured volumetric composition that provides for optimized sun and view conditions for all the apartments Most of the roof area will be used for terrace purposes The building is a traditional block structure with a clear outside and inside The kinder garden is expressed as its own corner volume Block 3 is about m2 which includes 127 apartments photo: Jarmund/Vigsnaes 2012 Jarmund Vigsnæs s 24
