He died date He married Catherine Hardtman date She was born date She died date Notes for Johan Philip Fritz: Age 36 on "Lydia's" ship records-1740 "Lydia" ship records [Fritz.FTW] The ship "Lydia" on which Johan sailed, started at Rotterdam, to Dover, a nd on to Philadelphia. Records of that time period indicate that the tr ip took its toll on the passengers. The journey typically started in Ma y, where boats picked up people along the Rhine from Heilbroon to Hollan d. These boats had to pass 26 custom houses, where at some stop, the boa ts and passengers were examined at the whim of the local officials. In t he meantime, the passengers were forced to find food and shelter. The tr ip to Holland took approximately 4-6 weeks. Once at the port, the passenge rs might be detained another 5-6 weeks. The trip to Dover may have tak en up to two weeks, where the passengers again had to await passage to Phi ladelphia, which often took another 8-12 weeks depending upon the weath er and winds. "This is where the real misery began". The ships were typica lly packed with passengers, with little or no conveniences. Some ships on ly had one oil lamp below deck. Storms, disease and ship wrecks were comm on. ("Pennsylvania Pioneers", Vol., 1934) During 1740, six immigrant ships arrived in Philadelphia. The "Lydia ", of British registery, arrived in Philadelphia on or about September 27,1740. The ship passenger records indicate that approximately 91 males 'si gned' the register, though typically in those times record keeping was n ot a priority. Also the records donot include females or children under t he age of 16. It can be assumed that the ship probably had between passengers. The ship records indicate that Philip could not write, as an "X" is besi de his name. Also, the next name listed was Johan Adam Fritz, age 18, w ho might have been Philip's son. S he died of blood poisoning three days after my mother was born and befo re she died she gave my mother to her mother and stepfather to rais e. My mothers name was Jewel Isabel (Black) Westphal, as her grandmoth er and step-grandfather adopted her at a later date.
