Sparrønningen, Nøtterøy Ancestors and descendents to Rasmus Halvorsen Bjerkøysund Sparrønningen Færder nasjonalpark (outside the green line) 1

Preface On these pages we shall try to present the family history of Rasmus Halvorsen ( ). It all started in Sparrønningen, a nice place on the eastern side of Nøtterøy. Sparrønningen is close to Færder National Park and the people who lived there years ago were usually seamen. On the front page we have given photos and a map of the area, including Sparrønningen and Bjerkøysund. Here was the home of Rasmus Halvorsen, which was one of my great grandparents. We shall try to give some of the ancestors as well as descendants to Rasmus Halvorsen. In order to be able to see the relation between the descendants I have used a coding system which will be explained in more details on page 6. You can easily follow the generations and see your relationship to other members of the family which is explained in more detail on page 7.. In this work I have used the book Nøtterøy (from 1971) written by Sigurd H. Unneberg. This book is based on the book by Lorens Berg from1922. Thus, in 1950 Nøtterøy formannskap decided to point out a so called bokutvalg in order to realize and update the book of Lorens Berg. The work started in 1957 and was finished by S. Unneberg in I have also used Bergs book for Tjøme and of course the genealogical resources on the net including the church books (digitised parish registers). Furthermore I have used the large international source My Heritage. Thormod Henriksen NB! No attempts are made to translate the Norwegian names. 3 Rasmus Halvorsen The family tree Rasmus Halvorsen ( ). Rasmus is the one that is responsible for the family name Rasmussen. His father was Halvor Rasmussen and his grandfather was Rasmus Kristensen this indicates how the family names changed from one generation to another. Our Rasmus was born at Kjølelund, Nøtterøy and he was a seaman all his life. He was married two times; (1) with Andrea Mortensdatter ( ). Together they had Halvor born in Andrea died only 36 years old. Then Rasmus married in 1845 Inger Maria Abrahamsdatter ( ). All together Rasmus had 7 children which will be discussed below. Before we embark on the descendants, we shall look more closely into the ancestors. For Rasmus we have the following family tree. Lars?? + Anne Mortensdatter Anne married (1721) Rasmus Pedersen Ølrich on Søndre Gipø. They had Kristoffer together, and Kristen was a son of Anne from an earlier marrige. Ola Olssøn + Inger Smidsrød ( ) Even Sørensen Rubberud +? ( ) Gunnar Olssøn + Jøran Jakobsdatter ( ) ( ) Hans Jørgensen + Helvig Guttormsen ( ) (? 1718) Kristen Larsen + Kari Sørensdatter ( ) (?) Søndre Gipø 6 children Halvor Eriksen + Maria Larsdatter ( ) ( ) Slagen Stangeby Nils Olsen + Margrete Evensdatter (1680? ) ( 1680?) Smidsrød Ole Gunnarssøn + Kari Hansdatter ( ) ( ) Nordre Sand, Bergan Rasmus Kristensen + Mari Halvorsdatter ( ) ( ) Søndre Gipø Bugården Stangeby Kristoffer Nilssen + Helvig Olsdatter ( ) 1775 ( ) V. Oterbekk Skallestad Halvor Rasmussen (1779? ) Bugården Kjølelund + Oline Kristoffersdatter (1781?) Skallestad Rasmus Halvorsen ( ) 3

Rasmus parents Halvor Rasmusen (1779?) was from Bugården (near Hjemseng). He had 9 sisters and brothers. He married 1807 Oline Kristoffersdatter from Skallestad close to where you find the store Meny today. They took over Bugården in 1806 and sold it two years later and moved then to Kjølelund. Grandparents A. Rasmus Kristensen ( ) and Mari Halvorsdatter ( ). Rasmus was born on Søndre Gipø and was a farmer on Bugården He married in 1773 Mari Halvorsdatter from Stangeby. They had the children; 1. Kristen (1777) he died 20 years old from drowning, 2. Halvor (1779) and 3. Kristoffer (1786). After Mari died in 1789 Rasmus married Dorte Iversdatter and they got two children ; Iver (1792) and Jakob (1795). B. Kristoffer Nilssen ( ) and Helvig Olsdatter ( ). Kristoffer came to Skallestad from Vestre Oterbekk. He was first married to Anne Andersdatter and they got 10 children. Anne died in 1773 and he then married Helvig Olsdatter. They got 4 children and Oline the mother of Rasmus was the youngest. Great grandparents A. Kristen Larsen ( ) and Kari Sørensdatter. Kristen was the stepson of the owner of Søndre Gipø and took over part of the farm in He was married to Kari Sørensdatter and they got 6 children. Rasmus, born in 1734, was the second oldest. We have no more information on Kari Sørensdatter. B. Halvor Eriksen ( ) and Maria Larsdatter ( ). Maria Larsdatter was from Bjerkøy, She was married to Amund Andersen Øvre Stangeby. They had 3 daughters. Amund died only 30 years old and she married then Halvor Eriksen from Adamsrød in Slagen. They got 5 daughters and Mari (1743) was the grandmother of Rasmus Halvorsen. C. Ole Gunnarssøn ( ) and Kari Hansdatter ( ). Ole had 4 sisters and a brother. He married Kari in 1743 and they got 9 children. Helvig was the oldest. Ola was the son of Gunnar Olsen (Mitta) or Middelborg and Jøran Jakobsdatter from Petterød. D. Nils Olssøn (1680?) and Margrete Evensdatter (1680?). They married in 1705 in Nøtterøy church. Nils was from Smidsrød. They got the children; Even (1707), Gunde (1712) and Kristoffer (1714). 4

Rasmus two wives Andrea Mortensdatter Andrea was from Sem Stokke. She was the first wife of Rasmus Halvorsen and she died only 36 years old. She was the daughter of Morten Knudsen and Maren Andersdatter. They had 5 children; Johanne (1798), Ingeborg (1800), Anders (1802), Andrea (1804) and Morten (1806). Rasmus and Andrea hat one child Halvor (1836) and he is coded as R 1 in this investigation. Knut + Maren Halvorsdatter (1724?) Anders Olssøn Skogen + Ingeborg Amundsdatter ( ) ( ) Morten Knutsen ( ) Stokke Nedre Sem Maren Andersdatter (1775 ) Andrea Mortensdatter ( ) Inger Maria Abrahamsdatter Inger Maria or Marie was from Arnadal in Stokke. I have problems about her ancestors. I assume that her father was Abraham Iversen, a seaman from Stokke. Her mother was Marie Andersdatter. Inger Maria married Halvor Rasmussen and they got 6 children; Andrea (1846), Abraham (1849), Olaus (1851), Mathias (1854), Rikard Marsilius (1857) and Marie (1860. Inger Maria died in 1902, 84 years old. She had been a widow for 27 years. Iver Abrahamsen + Anne Katrine Madsdatter Abraham Iversen ( ) Stokke Marie Andersdatter (1792?) Inger Maria Abrahamsdatter ( ) 5

The descendants of Rasmus Halvorsen The coding system For all descendants of Rasmus Halvorsen and his two wives we use a coding system. All persons belonging to the Rasmus family are denoted with the letter R (implying descendants of Rasmus Halvorsen). Furthermore, in order to distinguish all the R`s we use numbers. The first generation, that is the children of Rasmus, is given by R and one number. Thus R 1 is the oldest child, Halvor (the boy he got together with his first wife Andrea Mortensdatter), R 2 is child number 2 Andrea, and so on. The grandchildren (2nd generation) are given by R and two numbers divided by a dot R x.x. The great-grandchildren (3rd generation) by R and three numbers (divided by two dots) R x.x.x and so on. An example is myself, Thormod Henriksen. I have the coding R and I am second cousin to all the other R x.x.x in this investigation (or cousin, or brother). The coding follows each person and makes it rather easy to see the family relation between the people and the generations. The system is easy and you can see how each member of the large family is related to the others. Let`s first give the children: R 1. Halvor ( ). R 2. Andrea ( ). R 3. Abraham ( ). R 4. Olaus ( ). R 5. Mathias ( ). R 6. Rikard M. ( ) R 7. Marie ( ). R 5 Mathias To the right photo from You see two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren to Rasmus Halvorsen Behind is R 5.6 Emilie Henriksen and R 7.2 Ragnar Carlsen. On the bench from left is R Arild Carlsen, R Aggie Fadum and R Thormod Henriksen. Aggie and Thormod have only the last digit different they must therefore be sister and brother. 6

Family relation We shall try to explain the family relation in more details and give a few examples. Definition of the family: All those given by R are descendants of Rasmus Halvorsen. They are in a large family for genetical reasons. All those married into the family are of course in the family of the particular husband/wife and their descendants, but not genetically to the other R members. Generation: The number of digits after R gives the generation after Rasmus Halvorsen. Example R 7 Marie Carlsen 1. generation daughter. R Marcus Alexander Horstad 6. generation Sibling (Brother Sister): Equal number of digits after R and only the last digit is different. We give 3 examples; a). R 5 Mathias Rasmussen and R 7 Marie Carlsen. b). R Trygve Myhr and R Jonas Myhr. c). R Sara Elizabeth Brinson and R Hope Elise Brinson. First cousins (fetter kusine): First cousins have grandparents in common. In this investigation it implies 2 persons with R and at least 2 digits. They must have the same number of digits. The requirements is that the second last number is different. We give 3 examples; a). R 1.2 Reinhard Hall and R 5.6 Emilie Henriksen b). R Holberg Kristiansen and R Odd Rasmussen. c). R Trygve Abrahamsen and R Andreas Haugstad. Second cousins (tremenning): Second cousins share great grandparents. In this presentation two persons who are second cousins have a coding with R and at least 3 digits. The third digit from the end must be different. We give three examples. a). R Mildred Thompson and R Aggie Fadum b). R Terje Kristiansen and R Odd Ingvaldsen. c). R Caroline Brodin and R Ylva Holstein. Third Cousins (firmenning): Third cousins share great-great-grandparents. We realize that third cousins within this family are denoted by R and at least 4 digits. The fourth digit from the end must be different. Again we give three examples. a). R Parker Thompson and R Kristin Muren b). R Kim Rasmussen and R Trygve Abrahamsen c). R Tuva Eirin Ilestad and R Viktoria Kristiansen. You can easily go into the family and find your cousins of all types. It is more difficult to sort out aunts and uncles since you then have to cross generation lines. 7

R 1. Halvor R 1 Halvor Rasmussen (27/ /1 1888). Halvor was a seaman (mate). He took over in Sparrønningen in He married (1967) Martine Olsdatter Stangeby ( ). Halvor stayed in Sparrønningen until he died, whereas Martine emigrated and died in Brooklyn in Children: Kristoffer (1867). Reinhard (1869), Harald (1871), Annette Marie (1873) and Oskar (1876). R 1.1 Kristoffer Halvorsen (1867?). He was a seaman and mate and married to Jørgine Amanda Larsdatter (1867). They bought Solbakken on Bjerkøy in 1905 and sold it again in 1915 to Solveig Bonde. Kristoffer and Jørgine had the children: Sigurd (1893), Halfdan Bjerke (1895), Erling (1996) and Kristoffer (1904). R Sigurd Ingvald Bjerke Halvorsen (1893?). No more information. R Halfdan Bjerke Halvorsen (28/ / ). He lived only a week. Furthermore, he died 11 days before Kristoffers brother Reinhard got their first child which they then named Halfdan. R Erling Halvorsen (23/ ?). No further information. R Kristoffer John Anker Halvorsen (30/7 1904?). It is possible that he emigrated to USA and we find one John Anker Halvorsen in Chicago in 1934 R 1.2 Reinhard (Halvorsen) Hall (31/8 1869?). Via several sources we have gained some information on Reinhards life. He was babtized 9/ and confirmed in Nøtterøy church 20/ (with the result Good +). After his childhood in Sparrønningen, he become a seeman. They usually started as sailors years old and Reinhard was proberly among those. Some papers indicate (New York census) that he emigrated and entered USA in 1893 (24 years old). He certainly went back to Norway a couple of times. We find him in Norway when he married (1/1 1895) Olava Marie Jensen (1869) from Skrøslingen (a small island south of Lindholmen - map on front page). When he married his title was matros (sailor). However, 11 months later when Halfdan Ragndal was born he was a carpenter and had started his career with building houses. We also find him back in Norway in 1900, living in Sandefjord with a small family. In Brooklyn, Reinhard started a company together with two other Norwegians; Theodore K. Omley and Nils J. Hansen. They built summer homes in New City Park in Rockland County N.Y. We have found the nice story on New City Park and present it on the following two pages. Here we are in New City Park in the middle of Hall Ave. A very nice place. We have also a W. Hall Ave. and a Hansen Ave. 8

New City Park The story of a community.(editor note...this is a copy of a story that ran in The Union Leader, on Wednesday August 18, 1971 by Norreen Schnell. And as time goes on it will be updated. Last updated 10/3/00)New City Park may look like any of hundreds of housing developments in Rockland. But inside the quiet, tree -shaded streets of the community, the story is different. The Park, as its residents call it, is more like a private club. Ended much of the community s life centers around the lake and private swim club that has proven to be one of the main attractions of the area. The story of New City Park goes back to 1926 when Theodore K. Omley. Nils J. Hansen and Reinhard Hall got into a car and drove in the country to find a place where they, their families and friends might spend summers away from the heat and noise of the city. In those days, Rockland was the country-accessible to the casual tourist only by train, slow bus or long auto ride via Hudson River ferries at 125th Street, Yonkers, or Nyack. New City Park may look like any of hundreds of housing developments in Rockland. But inside the quiet, tree -shaded streets of the community, the story is different. The Park, as its residents call it, is more like a private club. Ended much of the community s life centers around the lake and private swim club that has proven to be one of the main attractions of the area. The three Norwegians were determined, and the bounced their car over rutted country roads in Rockland in search of land. As the party explored various roads in New City, Omley observed a gentleman standing by well in a school yard. Mr. Omley asked the gentleman, Mr. Clark, if he knew on any available property which would be suitable for developing into a summer vacationing community. Mr. Clark replied that if they would continue along their present coarse north on Middletown Road (now Little Tor Road), they would come upon the Collyer Farm. This farm had a mill pond on it which was, in fact, the old swimming hole of some of the local residents. The Pair continued north on Middletown Road past Davies Hotel which was originally one of a pair of homes built by brothers. Unrecorded history has it that the Blauvelt Brothers built houses exactly alike so that there wives wouldn t quarrel over who had the larger dwelling. The second member of the pair was the present Cropsey home located across the road. They drove past the Cropsey Farm with its red barn, its corn fields, its country lane, its orchards, and over the wooden bridge. The brook flowing under the bridge fed the mill pond on the Collyer Farm. The pond was about five hundred feet long with timbered shores, picturesque and peaceful. Located at the north end were two buildings, the saw mill which dated back to the 1800 s and an ice house built in the early 1900 s. Some of the senior lifetime residents of the area still remember purchasing ice cut from the frozen waters of New City Park Lake. The Coyller Farm was purchased by Omley, Hansen and Hall. The legal transaction occurred between Earnest Gibbons, the owner in 1926, and the Corporation of Omley, Hansen and Hall although the farm in a familiar sense retained the Collyer family name. The purchase consisted of 52 acres on which are located several buildings. One was the Coyller farmhouse. This structure later burned and a new house was erected on the site which in now occupied by Park residents, Mr. and Mrs. William Rhode. The Coyller barn was converted into a home for Rev. and Mrs. E.M.Anderson in which Mrs. Anderson still resides. (Editors note: The Anderson house was demolished after Mrs.. Andersens death in the mid 80 s to make room for new two houses.) The ice house became the refreshment stand and later the club house and there was one small cottage affectionately known as Mr.Gibbons Tea House. 9

The task of developing the farm into a summer community began. Long, hard hours of labor slowly shaped the new park. The Omley family chose the Tea House for their home. The Hall family chose the property next to the Omley s and the Hansen family selected a homesite on the hill, near the eastern boundary of the farm. The little Tea House became the present attractive home of Mr. and Mrs. Omley, the only surviving members of the corporation. (NB written in 1971) A survey was made of the land and a map drawn up. Roads were laid out, a well dug to supply the residents with water, pipes were laid along each street designated on the map. The property was divided into building lots and sold to people who shared the same desire for pleasant summer and the original corporation of Omley, Hansen, and Hall became New City Park, Inc. Meetings of general membership were held in the Club House, a small cottage located on Park Terrace this has since been converted into a home. Property was offered to ministers for half-price to encourage the residence of clergy in the community. An additional twenty acres was purchased from a neighboring land owner Norman Baker, a retired editor of the Nyack Journal. This land was donated to the Park Evangelical Free Church for a building site for the church and a summer conference grounds. Dredging the lake was a major task. The original mill pond had been dug by the Coyller family with a team of oxen. The founding families of New City Park deepened the lake and raised the dam by two feet, six inches. It was not all work. Summer offered swimming, and boating. Fishing was a popular summer pass time. Mrs. Hansen was the first to operate the Club House stand. She was followed by Mrs. Omley who continued for ten years. Refreshments and food were served. In fact, Mrs. Omley recalls serving a special occasion turkey dinner to nine-five people on a porch screened with cheese cloth. During the depression of 1929, many new City Park members lost their city homes and moved to their summer cottages which they adapted for winter occupancy. This involved further labor, but opened additional avenues of recreation such as skating and sledding and winter scene. As yearlong living became the mode, people building new houses erected dwellings of a more permanent structural nature. One of the first of these was the home of Oscar and Anna Larsen, Mr. and Mrs. Wellinder, Capt. Edgar and Esther Raymand, and Capt. Louis and Alice Pedersen. In the forties, fifties and sixties, Americans of many national origins have been welcomed to New City Park and all are grateful to the originators for having planned a community which still retrains a refreshing rural flavor. (Editor note: at the turn of the century were still hanging on) Although The Park started as a Scandinavian community, residents of nationalities have been welcomed over the years. The attraction, they say, is the rural nature of the community, it s friendliness and charm. Today 200 families live in The Park, and seem determined to carry out the intent of the founders, who set down the objectives in the first annual meeting of the New City Park Club, July 6, 1929,...The purpose of the club is to promote good fellowship, social activities and the welfare of the community. Present day officers of the club (which provides actives and maintains the lake seem determined to live up the objective. We must assume after this writing that Reinhard (Halvorsen) Hall (R 1.2) had a successful emigration to USA. He and his large family lived in several places in Brooklyn. In 1910, Ward 29, Kings, New York was the address. It appears that the family moved and in 1940 he lived in Ave, A D 9, Kings, New York. Reinhard was 71 in Only William (29 year) of che children lived with them, as well as Reinhards sister Anette. It is a challenge to find out more about this family and relatives in USA. I would appreciate all information. 10

Reinhard and Maries life and children Reinhard and Olava Marie got altogether 12 children. However, 4 died within a year. The first one, Halfdan (1895), was born when the family lived in Knarberg not far away from Sparrønningen. Halfdan is baptized in Nøtterøy church with Kristoffer (brother of Reinhard) as godfather. I assume he is given the name after Kristoffers son, Halfdan Bjerke Halvorsen, that died 10 days before the present Halfdan was borne. Lets sum up the available information about the children: R Halfdan Ragndal Halvorsen (16/ /6 1896). Born in Knarberg, Nøtterøy. He was baptized in Nøtterøy church but I can not find the funeral in the church books for Nøtterøy. May be he died in New York. R Willie Halvorsen (7/ /9 1897). Can not find him in the church books and I assume that he was born and died in New York. R Lillian Marie (Lillie) Hall (9/ /4 1971). She is born in New York. In 1900 we find Reinhard and his family back in Norway. In the census for 1900 the family lived in Sandar (today Sandefjord) on the farm Pukkestad. In the New York census for 1930 Esther or Estelle lived at home (she was 30 years old) and she was a stenographer. She had moved away in She married Theodore Nelson, but they had no children. He lived at home in He married Edith, and they had 2 children; Evelyn (1938) and Louis (1939). I am very uncertain about this information. R 1.3 Harald Halvorsen (17/ ). Born on Østre Kjøle, Nøtterøy. He emigrated to USA in R 1.4 Anette Marie (Halvorsdatter) Hall (1873). We have very little information. She lived with Reinhard and his family in Kings, New York. In 1940 she was 67 years. R 1.5 Oscar Halvorsen (1876). No information so far. The family of Rasmus and wife number 2, Inger Maria R 2 Andrea R 2 Andrea Rasmusdatter ( ). Andrea married Nils Andersen ( ) and they lived in Middelborg. The house burned in November The house was rebuilt, but they sold it in 1889 and moved to Tønsberg. The new owner in Middelborg was Nils Fredrik Jensen and Inga from the Bolæren family (Inga with coding B 10). 15

R 3 Abraham R 3 Abraham Rasmussen ( ). He was a seaman and he bought a lot from his mother in 1881 when he married Abrahamine Marie Andersdatter Tangen (1860). They got two children; Inga Rebekka (1883) and Anders Markus (1885). Abraham died only 36 years old and Abramine married (1888) Nils Johannesen and they got 4 children that are not included in this research. The family then moved to Portland Oregon in 1904 and Inga that now was 21 years old followed with the rest of the family to Portland. I assume that Anders Markus also followed the family to Oregon. R 3.1 Inga Rebekka Gjertsen (10/ /1 1964). She married Ragnvald Gustav Gjertsen ( ) in Portland Oregon in 1905 and their oldest son Georg Kristian is born there. The story behind this is the following. When Abraham died in 1885 Abramine married Nils Johannesen. The family, including Inga, moved to USA in Ingas second boy, Asbjørn (1907) was born in Norway. Ragnvald died in 1932 and Inga was a widow for 32 years. They lived in Knarberg until Inga built the nice house in Sparrønningen. See page 42. R 3.1 Inga Gjertsen IR Georg Kristian Gjertsen ( ). Kristian was not married. He used to travel to USA from time to time. He carried only a paper box when he entered the bus in Oterbekk for his travel to USA. R Asbjørn Gjertsen ( ). He was also single and lived alone in the nice house in Sparrønningen by himself the last 20 years of his life. R 3.2 Anders Markus Abrahamsen (15/2 1885?). We have no information about Anders Markus. He was 20 when the rest of the near family moved to Portland Oregon. We assume that Markus followed the family to Portland and had his family in USA. R 4 Olaus R 4 Olaus Rasmussen (27/ /2 1877). Olaus was a seaman. He never married and he died on the sea (capsized and drowned) only 25 years old. 16

R 5 Mathias R 5 Mathias Rasmussen (21/ /9 1938). Mathias was a seaman. He married Hulda Gjertine Nielsen ( ) from Østre Bolæren in They set the record of 59 years marriage. They lived for some years on Østre Bolæren and the two oldest children, Hans and Ragna were born there. Then they lived in Sparrønningen until 1898 when they bought Høibakk (Knarbergveien 15). 52 Ragnars stramp collection and work is described in Søndre Aker Historielag in 2004 by Jens Ingulstad. We give some of this writing (in Norwegian). 52
