3 photo: Philippe Ruault photo: Philippe Ruault Centre Chorégraphique National Avenue Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Aix-en-Provence This building, designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti, is an atypical project, fascinating for the ambiguous play it generates between envelope and structure It is built on a very limited plot (35x18 metres), which it fully occupies The centre is spread over four levels: a basement containing an auditorium, the foyer and administration on the ground floor and rehearsal studios on the first and second floors Since the structure could not rest on any internal support, it had to be banished to the periphery It consists of a web of block-stained black concrete posts, positioned diagonally and criss-crossing at the horizontal levels, that encloses the whole of the parallelepiped volume Behind the concrete mantle is a second façade of large glass panels spanning the full height of each storey and providing the dancers inside with a panoramic view of the city Like a ghostly, charred silhouette, the volume emerges from a composite landscape photo: Philippe Ruault Project is public! 2006 Rudy Ricciotti Mairie d'aix en Provence, communauté du pays d'aix Xavier_Gonzalez 3

4 photo: Vitorio Benedetti photo: Vitorio Benedetti Carré d'art Place de la Maison Carree Nîmes The Carré d'art successfully connects ancient and modern architectures It also provides a powerful catalyst for reinvigorating the social and physical fabric of a city The site faces the Maison Carre, a perfectly preserved Roman temple The challenge was to relate new to the old, but at the same time to create a building that represented its own age with integrity This building not only contains magazines, newspapers and books, but it is also a gallery for painting and sculpture It has nine storeys, half of which is sunk into the ground The lower levels house archive storage and a cinema, while above a roofed courtyard forms the heart of the building, exploiting the transparency and lightness of modern materials to allow natural light to permeate all floors photo: Vitorio Benedetti Project is public! 5 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott CMA CGM Head Office Quai Arenc Marseille In November 2004 Zaha Hadid was selected to design the corporate headquarters for CMA-CGM, French shipping-container company in Marseille, facing the sea The design consists out of a high rise tower with offices, and a low rise part with public functions like an auditorium, restaurants, a large aquarium and a maritime museum The blue glass façade, with 2 sloping slides, makes it 'elegant, fluid and sculptural' Hadid's London-based firm was chosen over two other Pritzker prize winners, Norman Foster and Christian de Portzamparc The 147 m, 33 storey high tower is also called "Tour French Line", to be completed in the second half of 2009 It will be the city's highest building, and first tower to be built after 30 years Situated on a small strip of land, wedged in between infrastructure, it is part of a large redevelopment plan for the Marseille waterfront: Euromediterranée Other high-rises are planned in this district, among which designs by Jean Nouvel and Massimiliano Fuksas Public access unknown! m² Structural engineer Zaha Hadid s ARUP CMA CGM mabuse photo: Bjorn Utpott to see more on the development of this area, go to and see y3aspx for artist impressions of the design 5

10 photo: Corinne Vezzoni photo: Corinne Vezzoni Station Fourragere Avenue des Caillols Marseille Located on Avenue Caillols in the 12th district of Marseille, Station The Fourragère is the new terminus of Line 1 of Metro in Marseille since its extension the 5 May 2010 Pole multimodal exchange (metro, bus, car), the station was built near the future interchange of the bypass L2 which is currently under construction The station was designed by architect Marseille Corinne Vezzoni Very light (thanks to its natural light), it is built on two levels and has two entrances At surface level, we find the entrance, elevator access, a welcome point gtr, ticket machines and ticket validation area and platform access At underground, two wharves opposite flank the double-track station where trains leave the alternate Project is public! 21 photo: Shawn Cooper photo: Shawn Cooper Fondation Maeght Contemporary Art Museum Chemin des Gardettes Saint-Paul-de-Vence The museum which opened in 1964 is a superb modernist light-filled example of the Catalan Josep Lluis Sert's work (He also designed the Miró Foundation Museum in Barcelona amongst others) Painters and sculptors of the day collaborated closely in the realisation of this building by creating monumental works integrated into the building and surrounding environment: the Giacometti courtyard, the Miró labyrinth filled with sculptures and ceramics, mural mosaics by Chagall and Tal-Coat, a pool and stained glass window by Braque, a Bury fountain, etc Project is public! 23 photo: Michela Sala photo: Michela Sala Vieux Port Pavilion Quais des Belges Marseille This giant mirrored canopy called 'the Vieux Port Pavilion', recently unveiled in Marseille,, was designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners The pavilion measures nearly 150 feet (46 meters) long and is made of highly polished stainless steel meant to reflect people and the surrounding environment of Marseille's harbor Minimal, yet effective, this intervention provides a new sheltered events space on the eastern edge of the port With six slender pillars supporting its razor-thin profile, the polished stainless steel canopy amplifies and reflects the surrounding movement of the harbor, creating a spectacle that encourages pedestrians to stop and look upward Project is public! 2013 Foster & Partners michela_sala photo: Michela Sala Metro L1 Vieux port - Hotel de ville 23

24 photo: Henk Heijnen photo: Michela Sala MuCEM Promenade Robert Laffont (Esplanade du J4) Marseille Located near the old harbor, is the new MuCEM, Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, designed by Rudy Ricciotti Dedicated to the theme of 'Mediterranean', the building was designed as a multi-purpose container to house cultural initiatives, exhibitions, theatrical performances, musical performances, film screenings, occupying an area of about 40,000 square meters Ricciotti has designed a box placed on the pier J4, connected by a suspended walkway that runs around the building to the nearby fortress of Saint Jean-century The building will be open to the public in the month of June 2013 photo: Henk Heijnen Project is public! 27 photo: Edouard François photo: Edouard François The building that grows Rue du Moulin de Semalen Montpellier The desire was for something different, material, purposeful, pleasurable, ephemeral and meaningful The study of the balcony was a key part of the project There are "balcony-gardens" to dine in with many friends, "balcony-cabins" perched among the trees for more intimate encounters, "balcony-lookouts" to curiously explore the foliage of the treetops, and "balcony-terraces" for reflection and contemplation One morning, when handling rocks, chicken wire, and concrete, we invented a living skin It had to grow; to sprout We put bags of potting soil and plants behind the stones We watered it with organic fertilizer It was seeded by mountain climbers Then we installed an automatic irrigation system on the façade The building grows Slowly Its skin has become a kind of mini-ecosystem The water collects in the interstices, algae forms and then dies, mosses grow and herbs colonize the resulting compost Scattered, physical traces reflect these transformations photo: Paul Raftery Project is not public! m² Landscape designer Structural engineer Edouard François Green & Hunt Verdier Michel Troncin Maison_Edouard_Francois 27

32 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill La Place du Nombre d'or Place du Nombre d'or Montpellier A complex of 288 apartments which together compose a plaza with shops at street level The plan of the plaza, an archetypal form in classical architecture, distributes the apartments in three semicircle, four corners and an entrance gateway to the plaza The semicircles are made up of square 12 x 12 m modules laid out according to the geometry of a decagon These modules, with ground and six upper floors, have two apartments on each floor The vertical circulation has been handled in a similar fashion to the Théâtre in Marne-la-Vallée, with the emergency stairs inside a column and a triangular module containing the lift, the waste collector and one room of the apartments The curve here is more closed than in Montpellier, with the result that the vertical circulation module is situated nearer the centre of the plaza, creating an exterior effect of individual houses and, by contrast, a completely continuous interior façade photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown! m² Ricardo Bofill L'Heraultaise Ricardo_Bofill_Taller_de_Arquitectu ra 32

33 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Les Echelles de la Ville Henri Frenay Montpellier 6-storey office building which plays an important part in the urban design of Antigone, in that it has to relate the new development with the city centre while compensating for a marked difference in level A shopping centre had for a long time defined the city's boundary with a blind wall which was opened up thanks to this project The element which characterizes the new building is a monumental double flight of steps leading up to the terrace, which lies on the same level as the Place de la Comédie The central door opens onto the lifts and escalators, which are also important means of access to the shopping The wings of the building are occupied by offices, while the centre has a more commercial character On the facade, the three orders are superimposed every two floors The design here is a progression from a simple façade with a succession of axes on the lowest level, to a pilastered façade on the two subsequent levels, and a combination of both on the upper floors photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown! m² Ricardo Bofill SERM Ricardo_Bofill_Taller_de_Arquitectu ra 33
