photo: Ivan Brodey Signal Mediahus Nedre gate Oslo In 2012, Space Group completed the refurbishment of a late nineteenth century industrial building designed by architects Ove Ekman and Einar Smith This area along the Akers River was historically referred to as NY York (New York) due to its explosive development in 1858 Today the area reflects a transformation towards a district focused on art, architecture and design Signal Mediahus sits next to the Aker River in Oslo The original industrial building has a rich history of uses, from textile industry to offices and events Part of the building burned down in the 1980s The project inserts a completely new architecture inside the shell of the old while preserving the historic The two correlates while both being clearly architecturally defined Floor area/size m² Space Group Nazar photo: Ivan Brodey 7
photo: Jiri Havran Spikerverket Nydalsveien Oslo The project area, known as Spikerverket, was previously a factory that produced nails It is located in an area called Nydalen in Oslo The valley of Nydalen has undergone a transformation from an industrial area to a commercial, residential and educational zone with focus on the river Aker that flows through the neighbourhood Aker River is one of Oslo?s main recreational axes and serves to link Nydalen to the rest of Oslo When asked to design an urban area to replace the nail factory, MAD set themselves the paradoxical challenge of injecting both urban vivacity and verdant nature into the previously grey belt The seam or snake is composed of individual volumes, each with a strong visual identity The residential volumes are clad in overlapping panels of naturally treated wood The three office buildings are designed with the same material palate? light and matt natural anodized aluminium in combination with dark, reflective glass and lacquered metal photo: Jiri Havran 2012 MAD Nazar 8
photo: MAD arkitekter v/kurt Singstad photo: MAD arkitekter v/kurt Singstad The MAD peloton Dronning Eufemias gate Oslo The challenge was extreme: What to do with an urban space which is 10 x 90 metres in area, with minimal sunlight and a requirement of 200 bicycle parking places? This strip of city floor should give pedestrians (and cyclists!) a pleasant experience and, at the same time, provide a suitable entrance to the commercial areas on ground floor level The solution was to give the entire stripe a bicycle theme MAD created a new bike stand, the MAD Bike These stylized "bicycles" in stainless steel provide safe bicycle parking and simultaneously create an interesting visual and spatial impression The bicycle lights were an essential factor - they would give a unique experience and galvanise the concept in this singular urban space 2013 Landscape designer Lighting designer Client MAD Grindaker as ÅF Lighting OSU MAD photo: MAD arkitekter v/kurt Singstad Just a few hundred meters away from Oslos main railroad, airportexpress and bus station 9
photo: SPACEGROUP photo: Peter Hebeisen Clarion Hotel and Congress Brattørkaia Trondheim The hotel at Brattøra redefines the classical atrium hotel typology to a new and strong identity The rooms are arranged/organized in four highly rational structures all oriented towards the perfect view The rotation transforms the atrium from an enclosed central space to a 3-dimensional star shaped lobby space Unlike the classical American and Asian hotel atrium where everything is exposed in a centralized and vertical, magnificent but one-dimensional experience under a glass cover the lobby is here given a 3-dimensional and dynamic spatial experience with a programmed roof, and a sequence of shifts between glimpse and panorama, intimacy and spectacular exposure photo: Peter Hebeisen Floor area/size m² Client Space Group Star Property C/O Realinvest Armelle 10
V-House Nesøya Akerhus Once upon a time, there was a very rare and special client in : "We want to rethink the way we live - not style but lifestyle - a house for all seasons, where the borders between inside and outside are diverse and changing And an enormous kitchen" The client had purchased a beautiful island property 33mx65m on the Oslo fjord 25 km west of the city The rough, natural site was densely vegetated, with a steep fall to the sea and a private beach photo: Jeroen Musch Project is not public! 12 photo: JDS s photo: Marco Boella Holmenkollen Ski Jump Kongeveien Oslo The Holmenkollen Ski Jump was the main arena for the 1952 winter Olympic Games, and plays an important part in the Norwegian skiing tradition A new slope emphasizes the existing landmark's values The shape of the silhouette is emphasized with a sharp and simply cut The given wind protection profile is utilized and offset in a parallel manner downward, creating a smooth bended rectangle hosting the slope, the main elevators and the top in-run program The top is then sliced horizontally to accommodate a viewing platform The Knoll building is moved further up the hill to serve as an anchor point for the structure, letting it cantilever and avoid visually disruptive structural supports From a distance the structure will appear as a milky-white sharp profile extending further into the sky with a diffused beam of light; a beacon for Oslo photo: Marco Boella 2011 Client JDS architects Oslo Municipality JDS Tel: , Fax: , skif@skiforeningenno The Ski Museum in Holmenkollen is the world's oldest museum specialising in skis and the history of skiing The museum is situated inside the actual Holmenkollen ski jump, where visitors can experience a magnificent view of Oslo 12
photo: Jiri Havran MAD Bygget Wismargata Oslo The master plan developed for the Opera Quarter is a result of an international competition held in 2003, where the Barcode concept by MVRDV, A-lab and DARK Arkitekter was selected Demands were set for the volumes to stretch the full length of the site, have rectangular forms and hold uniform material expressions The building blocks come down to form an exterior grid of public passages At street level, program organization aims to work with the overall intentions for urban life and public interaction, as shops, service and offices gives something back to the city Asking for an exceptional outcome is the site segment occupied by MAD's residential building: less than 30 meters wide and flanked by high-rise office buildings with dark façade appearances Daylight coverage from Southeast is secured, however, by the stepped volume of the neighboring building east from the apartments Regulations specify demands related to the distance between apartment windows and neighboring buildings, MAD Nazar photo: Jiri Havran 13
photo: Jarmund Vigsnæs s photo: Jarmund Vigsnæs s Svalbard University Research Centre The University Centre N-9171 Longyearbyen Svalbard photo: Jarmund Vigsnæs s Svalbard is special not only because of its extreme northern location at 78º North The cluster of barren islands in the Arctic Ocean has always been a bit of a grey area in terms of nationality, but has -since been acknowledged by some countries as part of The new and architecturally ambitious Norwegian expansion at Svalbard University should be seen against the background of 's need to consolidate its presence and its claim to the 200 km fishing zone - much to Russian annoyance The Svalbard Research Centre is actually a 400% extension of an existing university building, creating an indoor campus between laboratories, workshops, offices, library and the Svalbard Museum Like all Svalbardian buildings, the polygonal volume hovers above the ground on pillars so as not to disturb the permafrost-sealed soil on which its foundations rest The copper-clad structure proved to be unexpectedly amenable to climatic and programmatic changes Floor area/size m² Building physics consultant Landscape designer Client Jarmund Vigsnæs s Byggforsk v Thomas Thiis Grindaker as Norwegian Directorate of Public Works Claes_Sorstedt 14
photo: Per Maning Nydalen Metro Station Nydalsveien Oslo Nydalen Metro Station consists of a detached entrance pavilion on street level, while the 110-metre long platform area lies 12 metres underground The pavilion's architecture is expressed through a composition of horizontal and vertical levels and planes, which are dynamically cast off in relation to each other The closely-built wall planes are made of black basalt, contrasting and complementing a cast-off glass box in red, symbolizing the red metro wagons This stands as a signal for the station and allows a glimpse of the escalators ascending from the tunnel Installed around the escalators are 1800 neon lights and 44 loudspeakers This 'Tunnel of Light' is a work of art where light, music, technology and architecture become an integral and unified whole photo: Per Maning Floor area/size m² Client Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter Oslo Public Transport Systems KristinJarmundArkitekter 15
