7 photo: Mikhail Erofeev Soviet elite housing Karpovka River Embankment St Petersburg The building served as a dwelling for Soviet elite It had comfortable apartments of "improved" type, from three to six rooms, some at two levels This building is one of Eugeny Levinson's and Igor Fomin's best projects, a brilliant example of late Constructivism has pronounced dynamic expressiveness and refined forms It's a great example of late stage of the style, filled with the spirit of Expressionism and a hint of Art Deco A powerful turn of the central part of the building was constrained by static lateral wings with horizontal loggias at end faces All the facades were covered with cement plaster with marble crumbs, and decorated to look like stone blocks This decorative approach demonstrated that late Constructivism was ready to use Classicism elements It was a symptom of a return to development of the Classicism language photo: Mikhail Erofeev 1935 Main designer, Eugeny Levinson Igor Fomin 7

11 photo: Burçin Yildirim photo: unknown Red Banner Textile Factory Pionerskaya St St Petersburg Mendelsohn was the first foreign architect in 1925 to be asked to design in the USSR, on the basis of his dynamic, futuristic expressionist architecture A model was made of a large factory, similar though more functionalist in appearance to his earlier Luckenwalde hat factory Mendelsohn made several trips to the USSR during its construction He was inspired by the country's constructivist architecture, and wrote a study entitled Russland-Europa-Amerika However, the primitive construction techniques of the time were insufficient to realise the structure in full, and liberties were taken with Mendelsohn's design photo: Burçin Yildirim Project is not public! 1926 Erich Mendelsohn 11

14 photo: Mikhail Erofeev Ilyich Community Center Moskovsky Avenue St Petersburg The club of the Union of Metal Workers was built by Nikolay Demkov The little-known architect managed to create a crystal-clear sample of modernist architecture merging the approaches of functionalism and suprematism in his work He went down into the history of the Leningrad Avant-garde, as a matter of fact, as the author of just one project The free zigzagging layout of the building is divided into two zones: the theatre section with an auditorium, a lobby and a foyer and the club building with classrooms, a dining room, a small assembly hall, and a gym The mobile asymmetric structure is consisted of various volumes according to defferent functions of the rooms The spatial arrangement centers on the entrance section The most impressive view of the building is from the corner, from where one can best see the dynamic interaction of its geometrical forms photo: Mikhail Erofeev 1931 Nikolay Demkov 14

15 photo: J Moledkovets photo: B Kroll Langenzipen Business Centre Divenskaya St Petersburg The Langenzipen Business Centre stands in St Petersburg's Petrograd Side, an elegant district north of the city built predominantly in the eclectic styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries The project comprised an extensive reconstruction of a 1965 building, itself an addition to the nearby red-brick factory completed in 1895 in the neo-n style Preserving the four-storey steel frame of the original structure and introducing a transparent glass elevator shaft as a connecting node with the red-brick compound, Tchoban gutted the Soviet building, added two top floors and swathed the main façade in glass plates bearing digital imprints of classical Roman moulding and ornamentation The architects seemed to be taken with the building's duality and ambivalence: the stone-clad side facade contrasts with the translucent front, the architectural patterns dissolve upon closer inspection and the original steel shell is wrapped in the sumptuous glazed décor photo: B Kroll 2006 Supplier NPS Tchoban Voss Okalux GmbH Teorema Company Paul_Abelsky 15

24 photo: Andrea Martiradonna photo: Andrea Martiradonna Quattro Corti Business Centre Pochtamtskaya St St Petersburg The Quattro Corti business centre is located in the historic area of Saint Petersburg, in the immediate vicinity of St Isaac's cathedral The project called for the realization of a contemporary building while maintaining the historic façades of the two buildings that previously occupied the site Within the volume defined by these limits, four courts were created to illuminate the interior spaces and to serve as gathering places capable of hosting art installations, exhibitions and other public activities The façades of these courts are composed of reflective coloured glass panels - gold, green, azure and white - set at different angles The result is the fracturing of the overall reflection, which generates a kaleidoscopic effect that is enlivened by the natural variations in the quantity and intensity of sunlight The complex is mainly dedicated to Gazprom Neft offices, but also hosts complementary activities such as a restaurant Floor area/size m² Piuarch Galaxy LLC photo: Andrea Martiradonna 24

27 photo: Stas Medvedev photo: Stas Medvedev Yandex Saint Petersburg Office III Sverdlovskaya Naberezhnaya St Petersburg At the planning stage the space was developed, visually planned as something in between the second Yandex St Petersburg office with large original objects and the first, calmer, one - there has appeared a complex architectural geometry emphasized with bright colors in places Just like in other offices, in this office there have been created small cell zones for informal communication of 2-3 persons, which are located along the long corridor piercing the floor of the business center This corridor was the biggest difficulty for all projects of Benois Business Center, as it is not easy to zone a space which is so oblong However, this office, just like other offices, was finally made as a corridor-office system That is, along a corridor you can see cabinets and small open spaces for employees, as well as recreational areas, such as for example, yoga room, medical and massage cabinets, coffee points photo: Stas Medvedev Public access unknown! 28 photo: Peter Zaytsev photo: Peter Zaytsev Yandex Saint Petersburg Office II Sverdlovskaya Naberezhnaya St Petersburg It is indicative that this office is to some extent a return to the roots of cooperation of za bor architects and the largest n IT-corporation Yandex The first office developed for Yandex by za bor architects is in the same building of the Benois business center in Saint Petersburg, but on a lower floor In 2008 it was a brilliant premiere published by almost all the leading architecture and design media in The project has picked up many awards Four years later za bor architects and Yandex had decided to repeat the success on a larger scale - Yandex Saint-Petersburg office II is almost twice as large as the previous one - it houses the entire fourth floor of the building and has a corridor about 200 meters long (total floor area 3310 sqm), but size doesn't matter, the client wanted an «extraordinary office like no other» photo: Peter Zaytsev Public access unknown!
