3 Chicago Epicenter of American Architecture Robie House Welcome to Chicago May 24th Upon arrival in Chicago, transfer independently to the Palmer House Hilton, a revered landmark in the heart of Chicago s Loop and a member of Historic Hotels of America. At 4:00 pm, join study leader and architectural historian Rolf Achilles, a longtime Chicago resident, and walk to the Chicago River to spend the afternoon marveling at Chicago s soaring towers aboard a special 90-minute architectural riverboat cruise. A tour highlight, this cruise spotlights more than fifty architecturally significant sites, including numerous landmarks of Modern American architecture. Next visit Frank Lloyd Wright s Robie House, a masterpiece of the Prairie Style and a National Trust Historic Site. Continue to Oak Park and see Wright s home and studio, another National Trust Historic Site. Also, enjoy an exterior visit to Ernest Hemingway s birthplace followed by lunch at a local restaurant. Next visit Unity Temple, considered by many architects to be the first modern building in the world. Return to Chicago for a student-led tour of the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, originally planned by Mies. Visit Crown Hall, which Mies himself described as his best work; Carr Chapel, his only religious building; and buildings by Rem Koolhaas and Helmut Jahn. Drive past other Mies projects, including Lake Shore Drive, the twin towers considered to be the first modern skyscrapers. The original farm buildings have undergone extensive renovation in order to authentically exhibit this astonishing collection. Drive through neighborhoods north of the Loop, including the Gold Coast, for an exterior visit to the Charnley-Persky House and Chicago s Magnificent Mile. Continue to the Art Institute of Chicago for a tour of the newly opened Modern Wing, designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Renzo Piano and view highlights from its modern and contemporary art collections. Cancellations & Refunds: All cancellations must be received in writing by ISDI, and are subject to a non-refundable administrative fee of $500 per person. Written cancellation received by ISDI on or before February 12, 2015: full refund minus $500 per person administrative fee. Written cancellation received by ISDI between February 13 and April 9, 2015: 50 percent of tour cost per person. Cancellations received on or after April 10, 2015: no refund. After the tour has commenced, it is not possible to issue any refunds. No refunds for any unused portion of the tour including, but not limited to, occasional missed meals or any missed sightseeing tours. Costs for promotion, staff, and other group expenses are not refundable. In the case of cancellation, substitutions are not accepted. The tour cost is non-transferable. If ISDI or the NTHP cancels the tour, active registrants will receive a full refund of all tour payments. A package of cancellation, baggage, and medical insurance is strongly recommended. Travel Insurance: The National Trust for Historic Preservation strongly recommends the purchase of trip cancellation insurance, which is available for coverage of expenses in conjunction with cancellation due to illness or accident. Baggage insurance is also recommended. In the event that you must cancel your participation in a travel program, trip cancellation insurance may be the only source of reimbursement.
