Catherine Anne BARNES born 15 March 1895 Wakapuaka Nelson New Zealand 2. Olive Mabel BARNES born 03 May 1897 Wakapuaka Nelson New Zealand The family history of Daniel BARNES and Caroline Mary PAGE Caroline PAGE was born 19 February 1866 Suburban North Nelson. Her parents were recorded as William Page occupation Bricklayer and Caroline Page formerly Manssen. Johanna MANSSEN wife of George MANSSEN Farmer Suburban North registered the birth on 03 March The registrar was Robert Pickett (Reference RGO NZ birth registration 1866 folio 392 item 47 Nelson district website 1866/5755 parents not recorded) Caroline s grandmother and our pioneer ancestor Johanna MANSSEN registered the birth on 03 March She was George and Johanna Manssen s first grandchild. This was the beginning to the third generation of Manssen s in New Zealand. It is also interesting to note that on the birth registration Caroline had only one Christian name but on Electoral Rolls and other registers the middle name Mary had been added. I think it likely that she was christened Caroline Mary PAGE and continue to use both of her Christian names. Caroline attended Clifton Terrace School and it is interesting to note that on the admission register her guardian was quoted as Mrs Manssen Clifton Terrace. It would seem she lived with her grandmother. Another explanation, which is most likely correct, is that the family were all living in the same house. The school register does not give her date of admission but shows she passed standards III, IV and V in 1879, 1880 and Caroline left Clifton Terrace School in 1882 in the 10 th week of the school year. Her destination upon leaving school was not stated. Caroline Mary PAGE first appeared on the 1893 Nelson Electoral Roll. She was living in Suburban North and her occupation was Domestic Duties, New Zealand Women got the vote in 1893 and Caroline would have been 27 years old when she exercised her right to vote Nelson Electoral Roll Caroline Mary PAGE Domestic Duties Suburban North Residential (Reference Alexander Turnbull Library Wellington New Zealand Electoral Rolls microfiche) 1

Daniel s parents were Ann formerly SLATER and Thomas BARNES occupation Gamekeeper. Caroline s parents were recorded as Lena formerly MANSON and William PAGE occupation Plasterer. We believe that Caroline s mother was affectionately known as Lena. The witnesses at the wedding were M E MANSSEN, L I PAGE and D SLATER a farmer who all dwelled in Wakapuaka. Mary Elizabeth MANSSEN was Caroline s Aunt and Lillian Ida PAGE was Caroline s sister. D SLATER must have been related to Daniel as his mother s maiden surname was SLATER. Both couples signed the register. Shone & Shirley Funeral Directors reference newspaper article 2005 page 62 #The Nelson Mail newspaper Friday 02 December 2005 Custom Coffin won t rust in peace 29 November 2005 by Beck Vass - Former Nelson engineer died last Wednesday having suffered from Alzheimer s disease for eight years. On Monday he was given a final send-off by family and friends in a stainless steel coffin at Founders Historical Park s church. His daughter Cherie Palmers said her father would have been rapt with his coffin, which he had always spoken of in jest. He never talked about anything seriously he was just one of those guys. It was never a request. He always said the worms wouldn t get him in a stainless steel coffin. He always wanted it, he was a metal worker all his life. He wanted to be buried with his motorbike as well but we thought that was a little bit over the top. Mrs Palmer said her father had a passion for all things metal and while she missed out on getting a tree house as a child she did have a home made swing, see-saw and trampoline. Mr Kerr who began a welding apprenticeship in Nelson at the age of 15 worked in the engineering industry until he retired at 60. Among the Nelson projects he worked on were the Collingwood Street Bridge and the fuel tanks at Port Nelson. Mrs Palmer said the coffin was made by Reliance Engineering employees who had worked with her father. She had consulted Nelson City Council to make sure someone could be buried in such a coffin. It s, we believe the first stainless steel coffin in Nelson. He d be really, really rapt. Shone and Shirley funeral director Jane Neilson said it was the first stainless steel coffin she had seen.
