46 Academic Costume in America The wearing of a gown and hood in college dates back to the twelfth century when universities were developing mostly under jurisdiction of the church. Many of the students were monks who wore a cloak with a cowl or hood attached. The gown gave necessary warmth in unheated buildings and the hood covered the tonsured head; served as a shoulder cape, or when hanging from the shoulder, became a bag to use when collecting alms. Academic costume originated at the University of Oxford and Cambridge over six hundred years,ago when each university created its own costume partly from ecclesiastical, partly from civilian sources. In the United States, the use of caps and gowns, and hoods has been continuous since colonial times when Columbia University transplanted in America many of the regulations of the English universities. Several colleges had codes for use by faculty of academic costume before By 1893 many colleges had adopted academic costume for the seniors, at student request, to provide a senior badge, to take the place of the archaic "swallowtail" dress suit,,and to revive the tradition of a continuing university life. Since 1895, a code drawn up by an Intercollegiate Commission and last revised in 1959 by the American Council on Education has determined the.academic costume now generally worn by the governing board, faculty, and seniors at commencement. Doctor's Degree The gown is preferably of silk with velvet panels, three horizontal velvet bands on the upper arm of the full, bell-shaped sleeve. The length of the hood is four feet with panels.at the sides, velvet edging five inches wide. Master's Degree The gown, sometimes made of silk, has,a semi-stiff yoke, shirring across the shoulders and very long sleeves with a cut out portion resembling a "fish tail," and a closed bottom. The forearm protrudes through a notched slit near the elbow. The length of the hood is three and one-half feet, with the velvet edging three inches wide. Bachelor's Degree The gown is long, black, "worsted stuff" with the same yoke effect and black, long, pointed sleeves. The length of the hood is three feet with a velvet edging two inches wide. Associate Degree The gown is long, black, resembling the Bachelor's gown. The hood is two and one-half feet long with velvet edging one and one-half inches wide. The hood at Farmingdale shows the official colors of the college (green and white) with edging in golden yellow identifying Science. The Cap "mortar-board" is made of black serge or broadcloth with black tassel. The tassel of the Doctor's cap is usually made of gold bullion. Hoods are lined with silk and show the official color or colors of the university from which the wearer received his degree. The velvet edging may be the color distinctive of the department in which the wearer did his major work as, for example, light blue for Education, orange for Engineering, white for Arts, Letters, Humanities, dark blue for Philosophy, drab for Business, and maize for Agriculture.

63 Academic Costume in America The wearing of a gown and hood in college dates back to the twelfth century when universities were developing mostly under jurisdiction of the church. Many of the students were monks who wore a cloak with a cowl or hood attached. The gown gave necessary warmth in unheated buildings and the hood covered the tonsured head; served as a shoulder cape, or when hanging from the shoulder, became a bag to use when collecting alms. Academic costume originated at the University of Oxford and Cambridge over six hundred years,ago when each university created its own costume partly from ecclesiastical, partly from civilian sources. In the United States, the use of caps and gowns, and hoods has been continuous since colonial times when Columbia University transplanted in America many of the regulations of the English universities. Several colleges had codes for use by faculty of academic costume before By 1893 many colleges had adopted academic costume for the seniors, at student request, to provide a senior badge, to take the place of the archaic "swallowtail" dress suit,.and to revive the tradition of a continuing university life. Since 1895, a code drawn up by an Intercollegiate Commission and last revised in 1959 by the American Council on Education has determined the.academic costume now generally worn by the governing board, faculty, and seniors at commencement. Doctor's Degree The gown is preferably of silk with velvet panels, three horizontal velvet bands on the upper arm of the full, bell-shaped sleeve. The length of the hood is four feet with panels at the sides, velvet edging five inches wide. Master's Degree The gown, sometimes made of silk, has,a semi-stiff yoke, shirring across the shoulders and very long sleeves with a cut out portion resembling a "fish tail," and a closed bottom. The forearm protrudes through a notched slit near the elbow. The length of the hood is three and one-half feet, with the velvet edging three inches wide. Bachelor's Degree The gown is long, black, "worsted stuff" with the same yoke effect.and black, long, pointed sleeves. The length of the hood is three feet with a velvet edging two inches wide. Associate Degree The gown is long, black, resembling the Bachelor's gown. The hood is two and one-half feet long with velvet edging one and one-half inches wide. The Cap "mortar-board" is made of black serge or broadcloth with black tassel. The tassel of the Doctor's cap is usually made of gold bullion. Hoods are lined with silk and show the official color or colors of the university from which the wearer received his degree. The velvet edging may be the color distinctive of the department in which the wearer did his major work as, for example, light blue for Education, orange for Engineering, white for Arts, Letters, Humanities, dark blue for Philosophy, drab for Business, and maize for Agriculture.

78 Academic Costume in America The wearing of a gown and hood in college dates back to the twelfth century when universities were developing mostly under jurisdiction of the church. Many of the students were monks who wore a cloak with a cowl or hood attached. The gown gave necessary warmth in unheated buildings and the hood covered the tonsured head; served as a shoulder cape, or when hanging from the shoulder, became a bag to use when collecting alms. Academic costume originated at the University of Oxford and Cambridge over six hundred years,ago when each university created its own costume partly from ecclesiastical, partly from civilian sources. In the United States, the use of caps and gowns, and hoods has been continuous since colonial times when Columbia University transplanted in America many of the regulations of the English universities. Several colleges had codes for use by faculty of academic costume before By 1893 many colleges had adopted academic costume for the seniors, at student request, to provide a senior badge, to take the place of the archaic "swallowtail" dress suit, and to revive the tradition of a continuing university life. Since 1895, a code drawn up by an Intercollegiate Commission and last revised in 1959 by the American Council on Education has determined the academic costume now generally worn by the governing board, faculty, and seniors at commencement. Doctor's Degree The gown is preferably of silk with velvet panels, three horizontal velvet bands on the upper arm of the full, bell-shaped sleeve. The length of the hood is four feet with panels at the sides, velvet edging five inches wide. Master's Degree The gown, sometimes made of silk, has.a semi-stiff yoke, shirring across the shoulders and very long sleeves with a cut out portion resembling a "fish tail," and a closed bottom. The forearm protrudes through a notched slit near the elbow. The length of the hood is three and one-half feet, with the velvet edging three inches wide. Bachelor's Degree The gown is long, black, "worsted stuff" with the same yoke effect and black, long, pointed sleeves. The length of the hood is three feet with a velvet edging two inches wide. Associate Degree The gown is long, black, resembling the Bachelor's gown. The hood is two and one-half feet long with velvet edging one and one-half inches wide. The Cap "mortar-board" is made of black serge or broadcloth with black tassel. The tassel of the Doctor's cap is usually made of gold bullion. Hoods are lined with silk and show the official color or colors of the university from which the wearer received his degree. The velvet edging may be the color distinctive of the department in which the wearer did his major work as, for example, light blue for Education, orange for Engineering, white for Arts, Letters, Humanities, dark blue for Philosophy, drab for Business, and maize for Agriculture.

91 Academic Costume in America The wearing of a gown and hood in college dates back to the twelfth century when universities were developing mostly under jurisdiction of the church. Many of the students were monks who wore a cloak with a cowl or hood attached. The gown gave necessary warmth in unheated buildings and the hood covered the tonsured head; served as a shoulder cape, or when hanging from the shoulder, became a bag to use when collecting alms. Academic costume originated at the University of Oxford and Cambridge over six hundred years.ago when each university created its own costume partly from ecclesiastical, partly from civilian sources. In the United States, the use of caps and gowns, and hoods has been continuous since colonial times when Columbia University transplanted in America many of the regulations of the English universities. Several colleges had codes for use by faculty of academic costume before By 1893 many colleges had adopted academic costume for the seniors, at student request, to provide a senior badge, to take the place of the archaic "swallowtail" dress suit, and to revive the tradition of a continuing university life. Since 1895, a code drawn up by an Intercollegiate Commission and last revised in 1959 by the American Council on Education has determined the.academic costume now generally worn by the governing board, faculty, and seniors at commencement. Doctor's Degree The gown is preferably of silk with velvet panels, three horizontal velvet bands on the upper arm of the full, bell-shaped sleeve. The length of the hood is four feet with panels at the sides, velvet edging five inches wide. Master's Degree The gown, sometimes made of silk, has,a semi-stiff yoke, shirring across the shoulders and very long sleeves with a cut out portion resembling a "fish tail," and a closed bottom. The forearm protrudes through a notched slit near the elbow. The length of the hood is three and one-half feet, with the velvet edging three inches wide. Bachelor's Degree The gown is long, black, "worsted stuff" with the same yoke effect and black, long, pointed sleeves. The length of the hood is three feet with a velvet edging two inches wide. Associate Degree The gown is long, black, resembling the Bachelor's gown. The hood is two and one-half feet long with velvet edging one and one-half inches wide. The Cap "mortar-board" is made of black serge or broadcloth with black tassel. The tassel of the Doctor's cap is usually made of gold bullion. Hoods are lined with silk and show the official color or colors of the university from which the wearer received his degree. The velvet edging may be the color distinctive of the department in which the wearer did his major work as, for example, light blue for Education, orange for Engineering, white for Arts, Letters, Humanities, dark blue for Philosophy, drab for Business, and maize for Agriculture.
