2 THE PROJECT 1. To photograph all the war graves and primary memorials of New Zealanders who, serving with New Zealand and Allied forces, died in conflicts, from the Anglo-Boer war ( ), to present-day peacekeeping operations. 2. To create a digital archive and database, accessed via a website, enabling free public access to their biographical information and images. What is a war grave? The grave of a serviceman or woman who died on active service or as a consequence of injury or illness from their war service. (Oxford Companion to New Zealand Military History. McGibbon ed. Oxford University Press 2000.) How many war graves are there? There are 30,321 New Zealand war graves in 77 countries. Our research to date has identified more than 2000 New Zealanders serving with other Allied forces. Where are the war graves? The largest numbers are in France (7776), Belgium (4711), Egypt (2924,) Italy (2157), Turkey (2348), the UK (2105), and New Zealand (3548). In some places there are only one or two graves the Faroe Islands, Bulgaria and Kenya, for example. Why isn t the Government doing this project? The New Zealand Government is correctly the official keeper of New Zealand s war records and associated activities but has no specific mandate for such a global photographic project. Does this project duplicate what other groups or authorities are doing? No. This is the only New Zealand project dedicated to a complete photographic and biographical record of New Zealand s war casualties and is the most comprehensive approach to this goal. For example, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage looks after war graves in New Zealand and the Pacific; it has no intention to have a website with photographs of them. What is it going to cost? The original budget was, at 2006, $1.2 million, including research, photography and creation of the archive, database and website. This was based on a three-year schedule. There have been some increases in cost since our original estimates. Who pays for it? The New Zealand War Graves Trust as a registered charity applies for funds from charitable trusts, foundations and other funders or sponsors for each step of the project. Our first grant was from Veterans Affairs, in 2006, as a Year of the Veteran initiative.
3 Is the New Zealand War Graves Project an official project? Although a private initiative by a small group of New Zealanders, the project has the support of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the leaders of most political parties in New Zealand, the Chief of New Zealand Defence Force, the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RNZRSA), the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, local authorities and charitable foundations who have given grants to the project. Is there a complete Roll of Honour that is accessible by the public? Currently, there is no complete listing available in one clearly defined system as a full Roll of Honour for the period that our project covers. This is now available on our website. It is the first time that a complete Roll of Honour of New Zealanders including those that served with other forces is publicly available in one place. Where does the information about the war graves come from? From a number of sources, including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in England (with which the New Zealand War Graves Trust has a contract), the Ministry for Culture and Heritage lists in New Zealand, Archives New Zealand, the Trust s research, official war histories, the Cenotaph database of service records at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand historians, school and workplace rolls of honour and family records. How did the project start? One of the trustees, Dennis Kerins, came up with the idea as a result of a request from an elderly woman regarding the grave of her wartime fiancé who had died on Crete in World War II. It was clear that she would never make the trip to Crete and that a photograph of the grave meant a lot to her. Where can I get to see photographs of a family member, friend or colleague who died in war? Access is free through the New Zealand War Graves Trust website which will be eventually associated with Auckland War Memorial Museum. Top left: Lance Corporal Angus McAulay, Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Libya. (awaiting new headstone). Bottom left: Private Ernest Prin Smith, 8th Contingent, Waikaraka Park Cemetery, Onehunga, Auckland, NZ. Below: Sergeant Angus McCaffry, Carew (St Mary s Churchyard), Wales. The website, has been created by Zest Media Ltd. thanks to a grant from the Lotteries Environment and Heritage Committee. THE PHOTOGRAPHS What will the photographs show? The photographs show the headstone or memorial of each individual serviceman or servicewoman. There are also photographs of the cemeteries and the surrounds. The archive will contain some 90,000 images on completion of the project. Currently the website contains some 14,000 images. How are the photographs obtained? The New Zealand War Graves Trust enters into contracts with experienced photographers who must meet a professional standard of photography, and who are provided with detailed research to enable the accurate identification of individual graves and memorials. Why not use volunteers or people on holiday to take photographs at our cemeteries? It is crucial to have a uniform quality of photography for use in the professional design of the website and for the creation of a national archive. Supporting this approach, the Auckland War Memorial Musuem says the work the Trust is doing to create high-resolution images of an archival standard is very valuable to the entire country.

8 Signalman Ernie Myers parachuted into enemy-held territory near Mount Mentawir on 30 March 1945, but landed with two other operatives inside a Japanese camp area. They resisted strongly, but the Australian in the party was killed and Myers was captured along with the Malay interpreter of the group. Both men were tortured for three days, before being beheaded. Their bodies were recovered soon after the Japanese surrender when Lieutenant Bob Tapper, another New Zealander who was working with the War Graves Commission, discovered their remains. Evidence given to the commission by native witnesses ensured that the Japanese involved paid the penalty for this atrocity. His remains are interred in Labuan War Cemetery, Federal Territory of Malaysia. Wigzell, Francis (2001). New Zealand Army Involvement: Special Operations Australia South-West Pacific World War II.
