1 Other Family Trees MARRIS of Hull (1) First Generation 1. Thomas Marris was born about 1772/1773. He was buried on 10 Dec 1820 in Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorks. This is one of a number of MARRIS trees that has not been connected into the main Marris pedigree published on Another Marris researcher provided me with the main points of this tree which starts with Thomas Marris and Catherine Willson. It was originally suggested that this Thomas Marris was the son of George Marris and Ann Gillyatt who married on 10 May 1771 at Elsham, Lincs (see Marris of Wrawby tree). However, that seems wrong because that Thomas was of Binbrooke in his lifetime and was buried at Kirmond-Le-Mire, Lincs, on 24 Apr 1844, aged 71. The descendants of Thomas & Catherine Marris were not too hard to trace but it is not clear who Thomas Marris's parents were. The Holy Trinity, Hull, registers show the burial of Thomas Marris on 10 Dec 1820, aged 47, which indicates he was born around 1772 or 3. It is not conclusive that this was the same Thomas Marris, but I have assumed it for now. Thomas married Catherine Willson on 2 Apr 1800 in All Saints, Sculcoates, Yorks. Catherine was born on 8 Jan 1769 in Stallingbrough, Lincs. She died on 25 Sep 1864 in Hull Workhouse, Yorks. The Sculcoates PRs record the marriage by Banns of Thomas Marris, bachelor and Catherine [she signed Catharine Willson], both of this Parish, on 2 Apr The witnesses were Mary Willson, Susannah Willson and Mark Barker. 3 Second Generation 2. William Marris (Thomas) was born on 30 Aug 1800 in Hull, Yorks. He was christened on 31 Jan 1801 in Holy Trinity, Hull. He died in Jun 1850 in Hull, Yorks. William married Ann Patrick on 18 Jul 1822 in Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorks. It is only circumstantial that William's wife was Ann Patrick. This was the only marriage in Hull that closely preceded the birth of son John Marris (below). The VRI V2 from the LDS gives the baptism of William, son of Thos & Catherine Marris, at Holy Trinity, Hull, on 31 Jan 1801, with his date of birth given as 30 Aug The 1841 Census at Humber Street, Holy Trinity, Kingston-upon-Hull, shows: William Marris, 40, Porter, Y John Marris, 15, Porter, Y William Barlow, 25, Porter, Y The June 28, 1850 edition of the Hull Advertiser records the death of "William, brother of Christopher Marris, Fishmonger of Hull, aged 45." William and Ann had the following children: 7 M i. John Marris was born about 1826 in Hull, Yorks. The only trace of this John Marris was in the 1841 Census above where he a Porter living in the same household as his (presumed) father William. They were living in Humber Street, as were William's widowed mother Catherine and his brothers George and Thomas. 4. Christopher Marris (Thomas) was born in Jan 1806 in Hull, Yorks. He was christened on 12 Oct 1807 in Holy Trinity, Hull. He died on 14 May Christopher married Emma Gill on 20 Feb 1834 in Sculcoates, Yorks. Emma was born about 1814 in Bessingby, Lincs. She died on 4 May 1871 in Hull, Yorks. The Sculcoates PRs record the marriage by Banns on 20 Feb 1834 of Christopher Marris and Emma Gill, both of this Parish. Sarah was born in 1802/1803. She died in Sep 1849 in Hull Reg Distr., Yorks. She was buried on 22 Sep 1849 in Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorks. The assumptions (below) about the marriage and children of Thomas Marris are, indeed, only assumptions. Everything fits quite well but it would be useful to have stronger evidence. The assumption is that the above Thomas Marris married Sarah Atkinson. The Holy Trinity, Hull, PRs record the marriage of Thomas Marris, Cabinet Maker, and Sarah Atkinson, both of this Parish, on 4 Mar 1833, The witnesses were Charles Angus(?) 9 The GRO index of deaths shows the death of Sarah Marris in September Qtr 1849 at Hull. The Holy Trinity, Hull, PRs show her burial on 22 Sep The burial entry described her as "Aged 46, of Hull". We know from the 1851 Census that Thomas Marris was a widower by 1851, so perhaps this is the record of Sarah's death. More evidence is needed before Sarah Atkinson can be reliably placed in this particular Marris tree. Sarah Marris appears in the 1841 Census at Holy Trinity, York, Yorks, with three year-old child Thos F Marris in the same household. The evidence points to the child's full name being Thomas Fraknish Marris. The 1841 Census entry is as follows: Sarah Marris, 35, Y Thos F Marris, 3, Y Thomas and Sarah had the following children: + 20 M i. Thomas Frankish Marris was born in F ii. Martha Marris was christened on 31 Mar 1842 in Holy Trinity, Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorks. Frederick married Mary Thompson in Jun 1866 in Sculcoates Reg. Distr., Yorks. Mary was born about She died in Jun 1895 in Hull Reg Distr., Yorks. The GRO index of marriages record the marriage of Albertha (sic) Maria Marris in December Qtr, 1902 at Hull Reg. District. On the same marriage page are Richard Bellis and George William Rouse. Richard Bellis is preferred here because the GRO index of deaths shows the death of Alberta Bellis in March Qtr, 1932 at the age of 56 at Sculcoates. Although a year younger, Christopher Gill Marris was baptised on the same day as his brother Henry Richard Marris. 29 F v. Louisa Emma Marris was born in Dec 1871 in Hackney Reg Distr., London. She died before Apr Louisa married Samuel Walker on 5 May 1897 in St John, Hull, Yorks. Samuel was born in 1869/1870 in Hull, Yorks. The 1911 Census (above) shows that Samuel Walker was a widower with two of their seven children still alive. They were Henry R Walker (age 8) and Marjorie Walker (age 3 months). Samuel Walker was a marine engineer and ship owner. 30 F vi. Edith Marris was born in Dec 1873 in Hull Reg Distr., Yorks. She died on 18 Jan 1875 in Hull, Yorks.
